Instead of flash or a glaring light source (light bulb), use a subdued or reflected ight source, such as the ambient light from a room with a sky-light or many windows on a sunny day (but without being directly in the path of light). A cloudy day would work well for this too. Set the phone on a white surface then (even a piece of printer paper will work), so it will fill the rest of the scene with ambient light as well, opening up any shadows, reducing contrast. Natural subdued sunlight will work better than trying to light wih a light bulb in a dark room.
Again, avoid hard, direct light. If really neccesary, reflect lights off the walls/ceiling (more than one to avoid harsh shadows), spreading the hard light out, making it softer.
