I was a previous avid user of Datebk 4, when I had the Kyo 6035, but when I got the I300 the icons where only B/W, so I tried Action Names and I completely love it, Its easy to get used to and I like better this program, it is more versatile and has a lot of more functions than Datebk. I'm telling you, I really like it.

I'm a much bigger fan of ActionNames than of DateBk, especially considering that for me, one of DateBk's most noticable features is that it locks up my handheld several times a day.
ActionNames doesn't have that, uh, "feature." It's been rock solid. Even without that issue though, I think ActionNames is a much cleaner program--just as many, if not more, features as DateBk but in a much cleaner and easy to use interface. Plus, on the I300, AN's ability to link contacts to appointments is great--the newest version of AN will dial the phone for you.
DateBk's not bad, if it works for you, but I know I'm not the only one who's had stability issues with it (not just on the I300, it was buggy on my Palm V too). They're both good programs and add useful features over the standard DateBook, but for me, Action Names gets a definate nod.
Definitely DateBk4. The new version (in beta, soon to be released) will have a special dialing feature from within DateBk4 for the I300 users! The developer uses an I300 himself. Although there are no color icons (yet), the use of color in this app is fantastic.
There is a very active yahoo group (6000+ members, 18000+ messages since May 2000) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pimlicodatebk and the developer, CESD, is constantly on it, taking in user feedback and answering questions.
The beta release with the I300 feature should be out in a few days. You can see what's up at the yahoogroup.
By the way, I've run DateBk4 on my Visor Prism and now on my I300 and it runs flawlessly. And I am a poweruser with too many hacks!
99.9% of problems people experience with DateBk4 is due to either a corrupted download/installation or the use of a cracked registration code. (You can verify this statement in the YahooGroup.)
I'm using the beta of Datebk 5 (having been a fan and users since early Datebk3) and love it.
I think I got them in the beta Datebk5 package, but it certainly has color icons. They aren't that fancy, but they multicolor versions of the base icons.
I presume the original question posed suggested which was better to purchase now. According to the above posts, Datebook has neither great color depth nor the ability to direct dial. On the contrary, ActionNames does. In my opinion ActionNames is the best purchase today.
I'm using DateBk4 v-4.1a,pF. This was a beta available previously. It has color icons. In fact, it uses the SAME color icons format as ActionNames, so let's drop the icons subject because it's a literal tie.
I found ActionNames more visually appealing. I particularly like the coloring of every other line in the datebook section.
I chose to purchase DateBk4 because it has a lot more features. The particular feature that made the difference is the ability to choose which appointment and to-do categories you want displayed.
In my case, I have a ReplayTV. ReplayTV lacks a "schedule" feature, to show you when programs are scheduled in a "calendar" format. I use DateBk4 for that. However, I don't want to see my programs during normal use, so I just de-select that category normally, and only bring it up when I'm scheduling all my movies at the start of each month (I know, I'm a TV-geek). It's effectively the same as having multiple datebook databases and choosing to display one or many at a time.
My recomendation is: try them both. It's a little messy to have both loaded at the same time (alarms will go off simultaneously, their encoded info in the notes fields shows up, etc), but it's the best way to decide which one best fits your needs.
IMHO, Datebk 4 is far more powerful than ActNames. (and for some people that is important...like me. Others may never use these power features and ActNames may be perfect for them)
I used ActNames for 1 month and, like other comments, I found the graphics quite appealing....
However, I prefer the rich feature set of Datebk. The filtering, the views, the advanced options...
Don't get me wrong...there are some unique features I liked in ActNames as well, like the graphics, their use of pop-ups, semi-support for our phone....
In the end...I bought DateBk and have been very satified!

(i'm sure we will be having these type of discussions soon about the color Treo and the I330! - it will be ugly!)
Try Datebook4 with Dateplan Hack. Dateplan 'kicks in' for the month screen... substitutes it's own format. Using dateplan's available icons couldn't be easier, for speed and convenience. This combo took me off the fence.
