I have it on good authority that Sprint's internal conference call today officially announced the launch of the i1330 to Tech, and set a debut date for mid-June. Only four more months to go!
More details on the product as they filter in. Oh -- and the keyboard? My understanding is that it's a flat fold-out that 'looks like' a screen and plugs into the earpiece jack.
Plug into the headset jack? I wonder if that's just for an attachment point - my wits can't visualize how that would work otherwise... I gotta think that it'll connect via the bottom connector, maybe the ir (but that would be a stretch...).
but the june date sounds a little early for me..although they do hope to have their 3g service up by then.. it sounds possibile, but i would nt hold our breath...
as for the headset jack? i doubt it will connect there...

Weird-sounding, isn't it. But that's what I was told. On the other keyboard thread someone keeps saying they're posting a pic of it, but I haven't seen one yet. Maybe when it does finally post it'll show the plug and then we'll know. Still.... where else would it plug in? One assumes one would want to be able to type information in while charging, but maybe not.
As to the June date... well again, that's what I, um, heard. It's very possible that a few 3g capable phones will find their way to the market a bit before the network is ready, no?
AND... guess I can say it here, I've been assured that the speed will knock V's out of the water. If so, trading up to the i330 will be imperative, at least for me.
Hadn't seen this exact item yet, but I'm sure it has probably been covered. On the www.samsungusa.com WWW site on Feb 5, 2002 under news:
Since the introduction of the SPH-I300 with Sprint PCS service, there have been many rumors that a
similar PDA/phone combo would be available with Verizon Wireless service as well. Since Verizon
Wireless this week launched its next generation CDMA2000 1x Express Network in several markets, and
the new SPH-I330 features CDMA2000 1x capabilities, it seems that this model may be the new version
that Verizon Wireless was waiting for. ARS expects this model to be available through Verizon Wireless in
its select CDMA2000 1x markets in the near future. Very few details regarding the models have been
released, and ARS will follow up as more information becomes available.
I think the I330 will be slated more for the Sprint 3G network which is also similar to the Verizon Express Network. Since Sprint is going to debut its "3G" I think that Sprint will use the i330 as a leverage to help promote its network.
To my understanding, Verizon will carry the "I300", without the express network capablity. If it is called the "I300" or not, that is still up in the air. Sprint and Samsung must have some sort of deal because a majority of Sprint's phone are from Samsung. So again I WON'T be surprised if the I330 will be exclusive to only Sprint for a while.
Why would Samsung have posted this on their WWW site under news? I presume they know how the i330 would be used and I'd think they wouldn't want to perpetuate a false rumor about Verizon.

All of the other components, and all other palms, for that matter, connect via the sync connector (at the bottom of the phone). I think the headset jack comment was just a mistake - there's no way to sync through an audio connection.
Eagerly awaiting...
One of the best things about this announcement is that Samsung IS developing add-ons for the phone, just not ditching it for another (i330). I think this also means that the jack on the i300 will be the one used on thier future phones... 'doesn't make since that they would be building accessories that aren't compatible in the future...

I wouldnt doubt this possibility JUST yet. It may not exactly transfer directly through the 1/8" (or whatever size it is) plug/jack, but i have an Aiwa Mini-disc player that has the audio portion and right next to it a small slot that transmits the text/input controls from the remote to the main unit. The plug from the remote/headphones is only slightly larger and connects the two together. I cant see a headset connected to the keyboard at the same time, but that could be the way Samsung has it planned/designed. Just a possibility!
SPH-I330: 3G update to the SPH-I300, also adds GPS and polyphonic MIDI ringers.
SPH-i330
The SPH-i330 is a sophisticated blend of a wireless phone and Personal
Digital Assistant (PDA). The i330 functions on the 1X network for maximum
network efficiency and offers GPS services. This tri-mode device also boasts
a touch screen panel and Infrared capabilities for convenience and
connectivity, a speakerphone option and a polyphonic midi ringer for optimum
personalization.
While I was at the Winter Olympics I stopped by the Samsung pavilion (they are a big sponsor of the Olympics) and saw and held the new I330 phone. Unfortunately, the unit was not working. But here are some details:
• The I330 is a completely new phone
• I compared it to my I300 and it is about the same size (maybe a little thinner)
• The sides are sculpted (like an hour glass) and are covered with a black rubber material (much easier to handle)
• The screen is the same size and supports 256 colors
• The antenna is fixed (a little tapered nub in the top)
• The palm buttons are silver and closer together
Unfortunately, there were no Samsung people in the pavilion at the time…just a bunch of hired models … but they told me the new I330 would be out this summer.
Overall, it seems like a nice improvement over the I300.

Good info -- thanks for passing it along! I wonder if anyone else here is at the Olympics??

Hmmm. Any indication as to whether it is active matrix, or a passive matrix (like our current ones)? That's going to be a big selling point for me ... once you've looked at a nice active matrix screen (i.e.: Visor Prism) the passive matrix seems positively dull by comparison - even at the same color depth.

This leads me to believe that the I330 won't have support for analog. From everything I've read here, the main reason why we have antennas on our phone is because they're needed for analog signals. Not that it would be a major loss - I doubt many of us ever use the analog support. Maybe the I330 is a single-band phone in that regard?
About the only other thing I'd be curious about - memory size, 8mb or 16mb?
I don't know if the nub antenna necessarily means no analog support. Antennas come in all forms and sizes, just look at the internal antennas on the Nokia 8xxx series.
