If you have any questions, ask here in the forums. Please do not email me. Several peopl here have been successful in getting the process to work, and they're more than willing to help. And if they can't, I'm usually floating around anyway.
I have been successful in creating my own skins, although it did take some time to get the process figured out. The tricky part for me was putting the right files in the right place after installing all the apps Jake recommended. What i did was follow the instructions here on where and how to install the apps. then you need to copy the following files into the C:\Program Files\GNU PalmPilot\prc-tools\H-i586-cygwin32\bin folder:
1) Make.bat (included in Jake's Develpment Kit)
2) cygwin1.dll (was put on your machine when you installed Cygwin, just do a search for the file)
3) pilrc.exe (was put on your machine when you installed PilRC, again just do a search for the file)
Now you should be ready to go. First edit the .RCP file in Jake's Devkit according to the instructions. Next put all the .BMP images you want to put on your I300 in the above mentioned folder along with the edited .RCP file. Now double click on the Make.bat file and WHAM!! you will see two .BIN file for each image you included to put on the I300 and a .PRC file. Finally double click on the .PRC file, do a Hotsync and poof you have your new skin database on your I300.
NOTE: you will need to delete the old skin database from your I300 before installing the new, unless you are replacing the file with a file with the same name.
Please do not PM or email me questions, post them here.
Jake thank you for creating the tools neccessary to do this. We are all very appreciative.
THANKS Jake & Yorch!!!!!!!!....awesome hacks. One question: I'm using Kroma also (XMaster, your graffiti & logo hack, yorch's gaphics, SilverScreen) & Kroma allows me to change the theme but when I go back to the Launcher it goes back to the theme that was loaded when I loaded the Graffiti hack. Anyone know if Kroma themes will work with the graffiti hack?
So here's my selection of the best grafitti skins compiled into a nice little .PRC file for anyone interested in trying this ...
Somehow not all the images I wanted ended up in here to tonight I'll add the rest and repost.
If you're like me, and you only saw 12 skins and not 22 then you want to download this 2 collection prc's that allow you to switch between 2 collections of skins.
Does anyone have a template to share for creating custom graphics for the grafitti area?
Will the new graphic behave as an overlay over the default I300 graphic or must I also write code in the new graphic to link to the home (screen) icon, calculator (screen) icon, search (screen) icon, keyboard (screen) icon...etc.?
ok, it seems like the tutorial is out of date. i made a bmp file for the skin, but i have no idea how to get it into a skin file. can someone list how, and what to install(and where to get insyall files), and then what to do after i install them? thanks.
i have a few ?'s... first off, jake, you are the man... second is there any way to get in and change the phone keypad layout? next, i can't seem to get my skins and logos to bundle for the x-master hack.. i.e. i can only get 1 skin/logo in the data base at one time.. it's gotta be something i'm forgetting... last, anyone heard any nexio news?
have the quick skin kit (zip) on my desk top......and have a pic of my kid.....what are the directions?....found the read me file...not much help....tried to drop pic (bmp) into blank graf. skin...no workee...would love to add custom skin and logo next....saw the skin of the grand kids on the board... looks great....any help would be appreciated.....take care.....laxpalyer003
I used the online install function at www.cygwin.com adding the URL http://prc-tools.sourceforge.net/install and ended up with v2.2 of PRC-Tools. I've been fighting with it trying to create a PRC file and get the error "myskins.prc: resource 'code' #1 is missing" every time. I used PilRC and Jake's skin.rcp file to create two .bin files without a problem. But I can't get build-prc to output anything except that error.
I've tried using Jake's make.bat file from a command prompt. I've tried typing the command manually in both the cygwin default shell and in a command prompt. I get the same result no matter which way I do it.
I've even tried using the "new" command line way of doing build-prc. (build-prc -o myskins.prc -t i3sk -c i3bm -n "My i300 Skins" *.bin)
I also tried removing and reinstalling the software.
Problem solved: myskins.prc: resource 'code' #1 is missing
I think I figured out the problem.
This page: http://prc-tools.sourceforge.net/releases.html
says this about v2.2:
"By default, build-prc now warns when the database being generated does not contain particular resources that are considered vital; for example, an application without a code #1 resource is considered an error "
There is a command line option "--no-check-resources" that can be used to eliminate this new check for code #1 that is happening.
I did "build-prc --no-check-resources -t i3sk myskins.prc "My i300 Skins" i3bm *.bin" and got the .prc file without error or warning.
I haven't put it on my phone yet, but I'm sure it'll work.
Putting MessagEase keyboard on i300's Graffiti area
I am a newbie here so please excuse me if this is not relevant
I am the developer of new Palm OS text entry system called MessagEase. I would like to port our current program (which runs on Palm's as well as Cliés) to i300. The program uses the Graffiti area and transforms it into an efficient, full text keyboard. You can see what it's all about at www.exideas.com
To port it to i300, I need to find means to paint MessagEase's keyboard on the Graffiti area, either externally, or native to my program. I have skimmed some of the information here and fiddled around with a couple of programs, including Jake's.
My questions: What is the most reliable way to get a skin on the Graffiti area? Would it be best to do it externally or putting it internal to the program?
Also, is there anyone here very familiar with the process who is willing to help me in doing this?
I just downloaded some of the skins epardix was kind enough to attach (thanks, by the way ) and I hope to see MORE of them soon (read "STAR TREK" here:p ). Is there a gallery of these available yet, like the Techscreens gallery? Also, is there a hack that can get around the GOD-AWFUL ring tones that Samsung gave us? If not can someone please write a hack that will enable the Techsounds modules to be used in place of them??
Epardx, how did you manage to attach you skins file on this site? I see the attach file/ browse option at the bottom of the post reply page, do you simply broswe until you find the appropriate file then post it? Is it REALLY that easy?
Sure, it's mainly for i330 but he also has utilities for changing the grafitti graphic on our beloved 300. Plus, ALL of the grafitti skins on the site will work for us.
He even has the skin templates you use to develop those as well as keypad skins. (though I don't know yet if they work on the 300)
Just so you know, I'm hooked! It's easy, you merely create a .jpg of your new skin, use his upload tool and presto! it is on the site, converted to .pdb and ready to use!! (see my Mach1's for example, I also did the IndyColts but didn't take credit
Have fun with it! I can't wait to see what ppl come up with!
(btw, I'm not affiliated, work for, or even know the guy.. but my hat is indeed off!!)
