I forget? SGH is Verizon? Anyway, are you serious?

Nope its a GSM smartphone.
Just to give you a hint, this phone will stomp the 7135 to the ground and shred it into a million pieces. The SGH-i500 will make the Kyo look like it was made in pre-historic times.
Thats great news. Why is this phone better than an SPH-i500?

I have heard nothing about any SGH-i500... but in any case "pre-historic" times by smartphone/PDA standards is a relatively short time period. I don't really concern myself with how a smartphone that may not be available for 6-12 months (if ever) will compare to my 7135, which I can (and DO) enjoy very much today
If I can get 12 months out of my 7135 before forces beyond my control (i.e. a worthy upgrade is actually released) cause me to change, then I'll be happy
p.s. Can I safely assume that if the "SGH-i500" blows away the 7135, that it also makes the SPH-i500 pale by comparison? (I guess that all depends on what features are important to you... which is something I don't know very much about, except for really thin and lightweight )

Those are certainly impressive specs by any measure... and of course I would give a smartphone like that a hard look. One really big thing I noticed missing was CDMA. Isn't Samsung going to make both a CDMA and GSM version of the i700? I don't see myself going a non-CDMA route any time soon... but that's just me.
But, as far as I am concerned, this is nothing more than a "concept" smartphone until I see more info, and from multiple sources (and that's no knock on you or SPF... you appear to be a pretty sharp dude). I saw where Mac said that the i500 would be the last Samsung Palm-based smartphone... and I didn't get the impression that he was referring to the SGH-i500 (of course I could have read or interpretted him incorrectly...).
Anyway... is there any reason to believe that the SGH will even be available in the next 12 months? You probably think I like to pick on the SPH-i500 (that's not my intention, honestly)... but you singled out the 7135 for comparison to the SGH. Based on those specs, what smartphone presently available (or available in the next 1-2 months) can compare to a smartphone like that?

I'm guessing (completely non-imformed btw) that this phone will be out by xmas in europe and March in the US.
It is definately the latest dream phone, albeit non-existent, but WOW anyway!
Its fun to dream.

Yes... it's fun to dream... but painful to wait!
Long, long, LOOOOONG before this smartphone ever sees the light of day (in the US) we'll have another one (or 10) to "dream" about... but I'm looking forward to seeing what's to come

This phone will be formally introduced at Cebit 2003 in Germany on March 12-19. Therefore, it isnt a concept. According to the press release by Samsung, it will be launched in Europe Q3 2003. Since it is a tri-band phone, once it comes out in Europe, anybody can purchase it and use it in their respective geographic area. Unlike the US where all the phones are locked to a certain service provider, phones that are sold in Europe can be purchased like any other electronic goods. Essentially, there are no strings attached. Therefore, this is a very appealing feature for business people who travel frequently across multiple time zones.
Any delays in launch or errors will be solely on the part of the manufacturer and not the service provider.

That website is a Sony owned photo hosting server. Anybody who signs up can upload/download their pictures or movies for free. It doesnt have any association with this phone. I got that picture from the Samsung website and uploaded it onto my Imagestation account.

It'd be nice if one of the moderators would start a new area on this forum for the SGH-i500.

Ok, "concept" wasn't necessarily the best choice of words... what I meant was that I like to see more in the way of "tangible" evidence that this is a smartphone that I (or anyone) could one day hope to own (i.e. things like FCC info, reputable tech mag/site articles, press releases by the manufacturer, etc.). I understand what you are saying, as far as how things work with manufacturers and service providers outside the US... but I'm not able to make the connection to how we in the US will get this phone, or why we should believe we will be able to get it (which may be something you never intended to imply! )

The GSM phones that I have owned in the past, I was able to order either from an oversees dealer or one of the dealers in NY or LA who carry the exotic lines. I have had no issues getting them to work on Verizon. I just had to get a verizon sim.

I thought I read somewhere that the European frequencies differ from those of US; something like 1800 vs. 1900. Also, I tried to get some more information on this upcoming phone through google.com. However, I got zero hits. Could someone point me to the original article? If the article is in Korea, that is okay as well.

Well, there are many people over at www.howardforums.com that purchased phones that were exclusively sold in Europe, like the SGH-S100 and SGH-S300 ( these are regular cell phones, btw). There wasnt any FCC docs or other formal documentations
that hinted at the future availability of these products in the US market (because they were never intended to be sold in the US in the first place). Yet these people were able to purchase, or should I say import, these items from websites specializing in this type of commerce. They were the first kid in their respective blocks to own these phones.
The wonderful thing about GSM technology is that you can use any number of phones anywhere you please (as long as there are GSM towers and the phones are tri-band). A very different concept from CDMA.
If you still dont believe me (I hope you do ), you can check out the Samsung's press release.
