I give up. I'm usually a patient person, but I give up on this Saga. I purchased an HTC Ozone the other day and haven't been this happy with a phone in a long time.
Seriously, I'm sick of...
The screen turning itself on at random during calls so that my cheek can make 3way calls, hang up on callers, put my phone on mute, etc. I had it set to automatically sleep after a few seconds but it would still turn on at random. Very frustrating.
The GPS never worked, ever. Not even after the ROM update and installing Quick GPS.
Calls and text messages all of a sudden started making the phone vibrate and it wouldn't stop until I took the battery out (or died).
Random continuous reboots. I tried to let it go and count to see how many times it would reboot before it stopped but I ended up having to take the battery out after about 12.
Often the alarm would only chirp and then sound strangled and wouldn't go off anymore. I loved missing meetings or oversleeping because of this, and so did my management at work.
The list goes on and on...
To those out there still sticking with it I salute you. You're more of a trooper than I am. Have fun with all that. I'm off to HTC land. Woohoo!
I'm still undecided what I am going to do.
There are so many new phones out or coming out soon that I feel a bit overwhelmed.
None of them stick out to me and say... "pick me!"
Everyone has something that I don't like
My top contenders are (so far):
- The HTC Imagio - nice phone and probably the one I will end up with, but there are performance issues that need to be addressed first
- The HTC Passion - very little is known about it yet, but it is supposed to be the android with a 1GHZ snapdragon chipset that everyone has been waiting for. The hardware is what is the draw for me... I haven't been that impressed by android to be honest... maybe because I haven't really dug into yet
- The last (and my favorite one) is the HTC HD2 - Wow! Now this is really the phone I want, but I just can't bring myself to use T-Mobile. Their coverage is lousy (at least in my area) and they have a tendancy to charge too much for their handsets. So $175 x2 to break my VZW contract + the purchase price of this phone (not sure what it will be, but I am guessing $450 subsidized price?) = too rich for my blood!
I just got a replacement Saga. At least now i have -some- reception (actually, it's much better than what my old original 11 month old Saga had recently). I appreciate everyone giving feedback as to which device they go to after the Saga. I'm ready for a move at any time, but do desire an OS that can run a wifi hotspot, a front-facing (non-sliding) dedicated keyboard, and I need VZW global features. So far I don't see much else worth the trouble. But I hope there's something coming will all that's due out soon.

If you want front facing keyboard, runs winmo, VZW Global, virtually instant GPS locks (7 sats in less than 20 seconds) then I highly recommend checking out the Ozone. It's a smart phone and not a pda, but I really like the phone not being touch screen and just navigate with the D pad. I've had my HTC Ozone for a few weeks now and this, by far, has been my favorite phone yet. It's extremely easy to customize (as long as you know XML) and battery life rocks! I charge mine every other day, that's right, I get 2 full days of the same type of usage (more usage actually) as the Saga.

Surprised by the Eris
Wow... I am surprised by how much my opinion has changed over the last 24 hours... I didn't think I would be this close to making a decision, but I have pretty much eliminated all of my previous contenders (listed above)
At the moment, there is really only one and it is a surprise... The HTC Eris (Hero)... I went yesterday and played with the Moto Droid for about an hour and was mildly impressed, but it is way too big and ugly for my tastes... not to mention the fact that it is a Motorola... and it just feels cheap!
Anyway, I was about to leave when I decided to just check out the Eris... since I was already there... wow! It is so smooth... take that how you want... everything about it is smooth... the case... the interface... everything...
Less is more?
The Eris is running on an older version of Android, but you can't even tell because HTC has done such a good job with it
The Eris has a slower processor... again, I couldn't tell... everything was responsive even with multiple programs running.
Awesome Holster
One of the things I have missed the most about my Saga is the awesome holster (I know some of you will disagree with me about that). Holsters are kind of a double-edged sword for me... They make it very easy to access my phone, but also leave it vulnerable to nicks and scratches
Well, I noticed that the Eris has a cool shell/holster combo that protects both sides of your phone... and it actually looks cool!
Strangely lacking landscape support?
The only downside I have found is that the Eris seems to lack landscape support on many of the screens (or maybe I just didn't know how to activate it?)
Imagio pales in comparison
After I pried myself away from the Eris, I went over and checked out the Imagio again and it felt very clunky compared to the two Droids...
MS has come a long way from 6.1 to 6.5.x, but there are still glaring "finger friendliness" issues... like anyone else have more problems pressing a stinking button than using a scroll bar? something is wrong with this picture... <steps back down off of the soap box>
Anyone Else?
Anyone else switching phones and want to tell us what you are going with?

Reason: added link for shell/holster combo
Saga's days are numbered for me... I'm switching... Just went over to the VZW store to check out the Droid before I made the final decision to buy. But, like you, SURPRISED BY THE ERIS!
Now I don't know what to do. Like you said, the Eris was SMOOTH! not too big, streamlined lines, lightweight, EASY one-handed navigation with the trackball, superior Sense UI, and a superior portrait keyboard.
But in the end, the Droid will win out. The Droid wins because, quite simply ,I expect to have this phone for a while, and I want good hardware! Updates are pushed out to the stock OS (Droid) much faster than the modified ones like the Eris (because HTC has to rework the update first). The hardware on the Eris is OLD and SLOW. Maybe not now... but try again in a year.
BUT, just like I used to tell lots of people NOT to get a WinMo phone unless they were willing to put the effort into making it work just like they wanted, I'll say the same thing about the Droid. Want an "it just works" phone? get the Eris. Want something thats going to need some work (home screen replacement app, keyboard replacement app, etc) BUT has the superior hardware to run all of it now and in the future? Get the Droid.

I totally hear you. One of my employees has the Ozone, and it truly is a rock-solid device. But I'm totally spoiled from a touch-screen from years with a Treo (WM - 700x and 700wx) and can't deal without it. If I were to deal, I'd probably go back to a Crackberry (NOT!).
