This place has gone quiet...

That being said...

Anyone else thinking of switching to the Droid here in two weeks or so when it's released?

I personally would love to consider a switch... After 7 Saga's and an Ozone, I welcome the chance to get away from MS & Apple...

Unfortunately, the business practice of VZW of keeping everything an ultra-secret kind of has me irritated. The only specs we have are rumored at this point (even though some are more credible than others). VZW would be better off releasing official specs and such a week or 3 earlier than the projected release date (an "unofficially" leaked video wouldn't hurt either)..

Ive just settled into the ho hum of this phone.
Drooling over hd2 videos wondering if they will make it cdma & for verizon.
I might be willing to go no keyboard for that kind of power and that screen.

I have every intention of ditching this POS and upgrading to a droid.

I've looked around and nothing out there to compare the saga to! I'll keep it until a newer version comes out!

you checked out boy genius?

they (he?) seem to be the officially sanctioned "unoffical" site. They've got one in their hands, and seems they are metering out info slowly but surely as they are given permission to release each bit.

so far they've had a quick run down of andorid 2.0 os, posted some screen shots, posted some pictures of the device, and recently they got their hands on the motorola website in holding for hte device- so i think the spec's they have are pretty solid.

I think I'm just sick of WM and the Palm WebOS doesn't seem to be mature enough yet to make the jump there- I loved PalmOS for years but it died off so I went to WM so I'd love to give Palm a chance. And their new OS looks really promising but just not quite ready for business use- apparently the calendar, tasks, and memo's all blow. So I think android 2.0 gets to be my next toy and the Droid looks to be the top end hardware at the moment- plus it's "clean" OS without UI icing and other bloat - sort of like the saga does for WM- so whenever the Droid comes along I think I'm going to try it out.

Anyone know how the 30day return policy works if I add another line to my account?

Hey Michaelk... Long time!

Yeah, that was exactly the site I was thinking about when I said "even though some are more credible than others". They definitely seem to be on top of things there. PC Mag had an article as well that seemed to confirm or at least parallel what boy genius said Motorola Releases Droid Specs, Photos Online - Reviews by PC Magazine

I am right with you with being sick of what we've had lately. One disclaimer... Believe it or not, the Ozone has been a solid phone (for not being a touch screen). I've thrown lots of 3rd party at it and GPS has been perfect, but I would expect a little more out of HTC than I do Samsung.

The only concern I have is software availability for Android... Maybe someone can help fill that one in...

Hows it hanging!?

I'm gonna test it out for 30 days and make sure i can find whatever i need by way of apps. But when I think about it I dont really NEED that many apps.

i use a few things to make windows mobile work right- like phoneweaver, aebutton plus, an add in for the file browser to get more info, wm5 to transfer files to/from desktop without installing the mess that windows device center is, memmaid, the gps data dowloader, and gps toggle. I'm hoping that android wont need any of that- or if it does need some stuff to tweak andorid, I assume that exists.

Beyond that- personally- for apps I regularly use there's really only a handfull-
-googlemaps -obviously on android and apparently comeing with turn by turn directions
-ewallet- dont seem to have an android version but splashwallet does- so i guess i can retype everything into that if i had to
-some games- Anything to pass the time when i need to will do so i dont care what.
-an internet browser- I assume that the android browser has to be better then the mistake that PIE is.
-something to interface with facebook on occasion (not a big user- maybe once a week i use it on my phone- but i like to have something to suck my facebook friends photo's down and use them for photo-caller ID, or to occasonaly upload a photo)- seems android 2.0 has some built in hooks to facebook so I guess I'll make do.
- photo, videos, media player- again assuming android is fine there.

The only real big issue I have is we use Good Mobile Messaging for my business so that we can all have access on our mobiles to our ~2000 shared contacts on exchange. But Good says they are releasing an android version in november/december so if I have to I can rough it on plan exchange active sync for a short time I think i can be fine on android.

One HUGE item for me and the Droid... How are the updates performed? Do we have to flash the phone and start all over like we do with Windows Mobile? or Are they smart enough to perform updates/upgrades like the iPhone...

Seems like you DONT have to nuke it.

Quote:
.... I followed the instructions and it worked flawlessly.

Phone restarts itself 2 times and when it comes back on the boot time is VERY LONG. Don't be alarmed by that.

All my settings and data were intact.
seems you just put a zip file with the new rom on the sd card with a certain name and boot with a button sequence and presto chango you get updated. (other spots seems there's a patch or unlocker you need first)

Quote:
-Copy the file update.zip to the root of your micro sd card.

-Now turn off your phone and turn it back on while holding the home key.

-When you see a triangle with a exclamation sign and a phone, slide open your keyboard and press ALT-L to display the menu and then ALT-S to start the update process.

-Wait for the update to finish. If prompted, press Home + Back to restart your phone.

-Wait a little bit more and done!
see here: Learn how to update using your microsd card. - Android Community Forums

Not only that but sounds like there's piles of rom's for all the android devices floating around like the HTC WM devices.

so the big question is- what forum are we going to join to talk about the droid?

Last night I dreamed that I was making burgers and dogs on a good ol' fashioned charcoal grill... I look down to take the burgers off, and I had somehow grilled my Saga into a gooey mess. When I took it off, the keyboard melted off and my phone was useless... not far off from how I feel about my Saga right now.

Let me just say, the Saga has been WONDERFUL... up until about a few months ago when all of a sudden I started dropping all calls (while in my home) and 50% of my texts wouldn't make it out. (There's a thread out there about this) I got a replacement Saga which I thought fixed the issue, but nope-- back to the whole unusable-while-at-home. Now, this is apparentally a Verizon issue, since things were fine up until about 3 months ago, but I'm sure the reception issues the Saga is known to have doesn't help any.

That being said, I'm ready for something new. My last three phone have been WM and I think I'm ready for a change. I know that there's a chance the reception issues wont be any better with a new phone, but a with a new phone I'd be more apt to shell out the $250 for the wireless extender.

Plus, being a programmer, it seems that the Android platform is the OS of my dreams... open platform... drool... and it'll give me a reason to learn Java and stop playing with stupid .NET.

Anyone know what time on the release day of the phone I'd be able to call and get one ordered? Hehe.. I'd be very very very disappointed if I get shut out of getting it because it's already sold out.

If you have a business account - I think your sales guy can reserver one in advance for you.

I'm gonna wait till I can actually touch it in a store to make sure there's not any glaring drawbacks. But at this point I'm basically decided in my head to get the Droid.

Can't seem to find the signle heavily traveled droid forum. There's like 10 so I dont know where to start spending my time. phandroid, androidcentral, droidforums, and on and on.

looks like maybe they'll get us a place here so no need to join a new place...

Does anyone have any idea as to whether the Droid will integrate with an MS Exchange server?

I'll quote you

it IS a BIG new feautre in 2.0

apparently you can even do MULTIPLE excahnge accounts

and it apparently has a unified contact list (mix exchange, local, facebook, google address books from what i gather). Not sure of the cal also is combined. And not clear if calendar, notes, tasks get unified too.

Seems with the 2.0 SDK there's an open framework for anyone to sync into the contants (and maybe cal and tasks, and notes?).

Seems palm's synergy gave everyone a great idea and they are all following it... (good for us- not so good for palm- who apparently is starting to get sell ratings becasue they think droid will kill them- very sad for the grand daddyy of the smart phone)
