holy cow!

i know the screen is bigger then like any other device. But you have to see the video over Android 2.0 SDK gets official « Boy Genius Report here to appreciate it. The link has a video embedded from teh android 2.0 SDK developers page. Towards the end it shows "different screen sizes" that are supported. the giant one on the right is obviously the droid form factor. I almost pee'd myself when i say how big it is compared to the other 'typical' sizes.

for sure it holds TWICE as much info that we get on the saga and maybe even more from the looks of it. Considering it's 864x480 compared to the 320x320 saga it's not surprising but when you see it in real life it's still almost shocking.

FAIL on pre-orders.. the cust service rep didn't even know the real release date yet... but, I did talk them into upping my new-in-2 date so I can get a $50 discount effective immediately.

there's a droid forum right here now.

I've been babbling in it all morning- laughing.

I posted over in there a link to a blog from the press conference:

-They said you can "register" on the website and pick it up on the 6th.

-droiddoes.com is all new- but i can't find the place to register yet myself.

- My business account salesguy didn't have any info either that he was allowed to share- he said he'll tell me when he has something to share.

I plan to keep the saga for when i need to travel- that is the one big shortcoming to me of the droid.

Hopefully sometime soon LTE starts taking over and we can but one phone that works everywhere (well except on sprints network...)

I too am seriously thinking that I am just plain getting tired of WM. I've been a WM fanatic since nabbing a i730 in its first week of release. I followed it down to the Saga. I always liked WM because I could customize it to do anything I wanted. Like the iPhone motto, WM could always say "yeah, there's an app for that". but I'm getting tired of WM always being three giant steps behind. Why should I have to hack my phone just to keep it from turning on in my pocket, or to make the radio work right? And then lets not even talk about the "update" to the Saga... I could go on and on... but I think most of the people reading this understand perfectly what I'm getting at. I'm just plain TIRED of having to hack BASIC functionality in WM, when all the other OS's do most of it right out of the box now. What was once the greatest selling point of the OS has become its greatest drawback.

I hope that DROID is everything the hype says it is. I'm not a fan of side sliders, but I'm rapidly becoming willing to give it a shot. To hell with WM, It's time to move forward in life....

I am a bit concerned about one thing however. Some of my contacts in outlook utilize MANY of the fields available (and outlook supports a TON of them). I have no problems at all sending my contacts to google's cloud (my calendar and mail are already there)..... BUT it doesnt appear that google contacts supports that many fields... does it? am I just not seeing it?

I think this line from BGR's review of the droid should resonate with anyone on Verizon, particularly Saga owners.
Motorola Droid Preview « Boy Genius Report

"Verizon hasn’t and won’t touch or control any functionality on the Droid. GPS is 100% open"

That's it.... show me where to sign...

Those who make the switch, let the rest of us know how you like it.

I'm not far enough into my contract to make the switch easily, but if it's as good as they are claim I may try to work the loyal customer that has been putting up with a sub-par phone for 6 months angle...

ditto, what he said. Those who switch, PLEASE come back and give us some love with a comparative review.

I'll be working the loyal customer angle as well. Not to mention the fact that I had my last TWO phones with Verizon for a total of SEVEN years, so I'm kinda due for Ne2 lovin

I beleive you are correct that google contacts do not have all the fields that outlook and exchange use.

But how are you syncing contacts now? Exchange? Exchange active sync is built into the android 2.0.

I have an exchange server through my company- we just use hosted. If you already have spectrrr@yourdomainname.com email then you might be able to upgrade to an exchange server for a few bucks a month if you look around.

I'm waiting on my first replacement Saga as my signal strength has just gotten too darn low to deal with recently. But here I am reading and posting on this forum on my boat from downtown Baltimore (we boated in a few hours ago from a few miles south) via WMwifiRouter. I use the same method (with my Wilson cellular amp and 4' boat antenna) in the Bahamas each Spring too. The Droid ain't going to do it for me, so I hope there's a better WM phone on VZW soon.

Boy I wish they would... that phone is perfect, except for one thing... it's GSM... all the good ones are GSM!!!
I know it's kinda cheesy, but the first time I saw that animated weather on the home screen, I was hooked!

I, like many of you on here, have given up on the Saga... It has officially laid dormant on my desk for 9 days now. I bought an XV6900 off eBay for $75 and haven't looked back... not even once... Frankly the XV6900 isn't that great of a phone, but I have been in heaven with it... why? because there is a very mature and active community of users and hackers over on XDA forums. I am currently running WM 6.5 on it with the touchflo interface and it runs like a dream!
Not to mention the android ports you can throw on it... haven't even tried those yet
I wanted to just get a cheap phone that would let me try different interfaces and ROMs out so I can make a more informed choice on my next phone... and this phone has worked perfectly for that.
I have been pleasantly surprised with WM 6.5. I really thought it was just going to be a warmed over version of the same thing (and in some ways it is), but they have really done a great job of making it more touch friendly (especially with the htc enhancements). Things that I really didn't expect to see until version 7.
This experience has taught me one thing... I don't know whether my next phone will be Android or WM, or if it will be an all touch phone or if I will stick with a physical keyboard, but I DO know that my next phone will be an HTC... no question... the community is amazing! and that alone makes the difference for me.

I went by my local VZW store tonight to check out the Imagio. I have heard mixed reviews about it and wanted to see for myself. The form factor seems great, but I don't believe it is ready for prime time... There were major performance issues with it (at least with the one I played with). I did a hard reset when no one was looking, but the lag didn't go away.
I think VZW has another Storm on their hands... It's a great concept, but wait until the first update comes out or until someone releases a custom ROM for it. I really wish they would have put a better Processor in it... that is the main problem. It has all of the bells and whistles of the latest phones, but no horsepower to back it up.
Speaking of the Storm, has anyone played with the Storm2? I was shocked when I tried it out. I bought one of the original storms the day they came out and kept it for about 3 months before I just couldn't take it anymore. The bugs and the lag (detecting a theme here?) drove me crazy! Seems like I haven't come across a phone yet that could keep up with me... lol
Anyway, the Storm2 is so much better. If the original had worked like that, I probably would be a blackberry fan today, but I think it's just too late for me... seeing the interface brought up too many negative memories and I don't think I would be able to get past them.
So where does that leave me?
Not really sure... maybe I will just wait it out with my XV6900 and see if the Imagio improves

My company has an exchange server, I could go through it if I wanted to. At the moment I just use gmail for mail, gcal for calendar, and rememberthemilk for tasts. I sync the phone here and there to the desktop outlook to back up contacts. I would LOVE to throw my contacts into the google cloud... but they need to give me more fields! I suppose I could sync them to an exchange server... BUT I WONDER if android will support the extra outlook fields when its creator (g00gle) does not?

hmmm- that IS an interesting question. I'd say more likley than not if they took the time to get excahnge activesync to work they bother to get all the feilds that activesync allows but you make a good point about google so I wouldnt be sure.
