I think the big red "V" figured a way to negate the use of an AT&T SIM in the saga. I rebooted yesterday and the phone comes up with a network lock. It's asking for a PIN2 to be entered, and I can't register on the selected GSM network. No dice even after a hard reset... Any ideas out there? I didn't do any type of update (*228 or otherwise) So was this an over the air thing?
I dont think verizon and or microsoft could get their heads out of their ass ling enough to do any sort of over the air anything. They screw up normal provisioning often enough that any "countermeasure" pushed out wouldn't be a good idea I'd guess.
that said- no idea what could have changed. I assumed originally that the phone would know either from tower data and/or gps that it was in the US and therefore wouldn't allow GSM to work even if unlocked. But you guys proved my hypothesis wrong for months so I can't imagine it does any location check before permitting GSM. You happen to be anywhere near Canada or Mexico so you can call customer service and bitch that you can't use your unlocked sim outside the us?
does your sim still show as unlocked when you go to phone settings security sim lock? If somehow it relocked- maybe just calling to ask for the unlock code again is all you need?
WAG- maybe there's a counter as to how many times it allows an unlocked sim to get used after switching to cdma and then it relocks? Switching daily would be like years of international travel and maybe tripped up some counter?
Good theories. I did check to see if the SIM remained unlocked, and yes it is. The counter thing may be possible I suppose though. Other than that, I have done nothing different.
I'm in the Chicago metro area, so even though your idea to call and bitch is awesome, I don't think that'll happen.... Who knows though, I may take a road trip. I've wanted to get to Toronto for a while now
If anyone has heard of a preprogramed PIN2 code, that may help me. I've tried 0000, 00000, 000000, and the last four of my number to no avail. Anything else I might try?
*edit* Ok, when I'm in CDMA mode with no SIM inserted, and check the security tab, it shows as SIM unlocked, once I put the SIM in, it shows SIM locked...
does it say "sim locked" with both the vz/vodaphone sim and the ATT one you use?
could it be that something locked the ATT sim? Does your ATT sim work in your att phone?
Besides the last 4 of your verizon AND your att phone numbers at one point they used to use the last 4 digits of your social security number maybe that's worth a random shot.
I actually pulled my vodaphone card out this morning to try it today... Doing that now while I type. The ATT card works in the ATT phone, and I did try the last four of that # too. One thing I found, is that this "PIN2" does not to be very common, and if you mess with it too much, it goes into "PUK2" which it seems some providers don't even know exists...
Ok, phone rebooted, and with the vodaphone card, it says SIM locked! Crap, now I guess I've gotta try global support and say I'm being sent overseas... Odd though... It lets me switch to GSM only, but just with no service...
I don't know much about GSM... Does it still make calls? The reason I ask is I have a Euro Diamond 2 that has an AT&T SIM in it and I just booted it up the other day and though I can make calls with it, it never seems to connect to data... Could it be something AT&T blocks on there end all of a sudden? I kinda doubt it....
Well, after calling global support, they gave me the unlock code again, and it worked like a charm. I have no idea why it would have reverted to a locked status...
Interestingly enough, due to the software update, global support's flow chart is inaccurate. You still need to provide the IMEI # to them, and the number string you have to enter into the dialer is accurate for that. The "old" next step was to enter another string of numbers in order to get to the unlock SIM option. Entering those numbers produces no result, since the unlock option is now visible in the security tab in the phone options.
As far as the no data on the AT&T SIM, my data is working fine with the wap.cingular settings. No 3g, but all I need it for is email.
Once I set it to GSM only, the only time it even tries to switch to global mode is after a reset. It reminds you you're still in the USA blah blah... I really didn't have to do anything special besides enter the modem data settings from my AT&T phone for email and such.
