I have not tried it, but it might have something to do with the fact that Verizon cant run on a GSM network would be my best guess.

The gps doesn't require cell service at all. You can turn the cell radio off and the gps still works.

The only thing I can figure is that on the VZ network options, you activate GPS independantly in the phone options. Once you're in GSM mode, there are no options whatsoever as far as allowing access to the GPS. If anyone comes up with an answer, or workaround, I would love to hear it, as I use my Saga in GSM mode for work every day... It would be nice to use the GPS as I drive alot for work.

Do you have the phone in global mode or locked in GSM? Mine works in global mode.

I lock mine into GSM mode during the day. I haven't messed around too much with global mode, because I'm assuming it would just default back to CDMA since I'm in the USA, when in actuality I need it on GSM for my work # through AT&T.

just call verizon and tell them you are traveling internationally and want the sim unlocked.

if your account is in goodstanding they will walk you through it on the phone and provide you the magic key code.

Yeah, on some level I feel kinda shady doing it, but I figure they're getting their money from me on a monthly basis. It doesn't matter if I leave it in a desk drawer at home and use the AT&T hardware during the day, or do like I'm doin'.

It confuses the hell outta people who text me though... For a year before I got my Saga, I told everyone to only text my work number, now trying to explain that I get texts on that during the day only, and at night on my personal # is too much for most people to comprehend...

If there is no SIM card, the global model is the CDMA network, GPS will be open;

If install SIM card, the global model default is GSM network, GPS can not work

Disclaimer: I'm scared and have not actually installed the new update.

If I am reading this thread correctly, then what you are saying is if I install the update and then head to London (GSM), pop in a local SIM chip and try to use the GPS with a standalone GPS app it won't work?

@#%#@$!^&!$)*^&!$@)%$*!#_@)%*(!#@_$*(^%
That was one of the friggin reasons they were supposed to unlock it in the first place, for international travelers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(man this forum is horrible. it keeps auto refreshing something)

So it sounds like the chip is tied to the cdma radio. If the phone doesn't have it active the chip isn't accessible regardless of power to the radio.

Here are the options.

Switch to cdma when you want to use it but you'll have no phone or data service.

Try loading the latest version of google maps. In gsm mode go under help about and see if myl (my location) has an exposed cellid. If so you can use cellid location in gsm mode.

turn on wifi and then open googlemaps. it will use wifi triangulation.

If you need gps in another app install the skyhook driver to serve up wifi/cellid gps in other apps.

See my posts on Moto Q, Samsung Jack, HTC Snap, Ozone Cases, Accessories and Windows Mobile Forums

nah- he's talking about the website here. One of the scripts doesn't behave nicely with newer versions of IE and it constanly refreshes, gives error messages on the page, or worse yet with IE8 just plain locks up at times.
