I'll agree with that. We just need to find a way to free up some memory. Gotta get rid of these darn useless ROM audio files.
I'm wondering what else has been added. Pretty much any audio file that was there before was also loaded into rom (except one of the camera sounds but thats due to my tinkering...)
anyone tried to remove the appzone and/or live yet?
So you don't see any audio files that were added by this ROM? Just stuff that was there before? I've got at least 6 or so that are around 500k. That's 3 MB right there. I'm going to attempt to delete them out of ROM as soon as I get a chance.
Anybody who hasn't upgraded yet care to sort the Windows Root folder by size and give us a short list of the largest files they find?
upon re-reading what i wrote i think i was a bit convoluted...
I actually havent compared to see if there are more audio files than before; what i meant was that before the update, all audio files that i had checked were loaded into rom. It would stand to reason that the new files would also be loaded into rom. I've been way to busy these last few days to really dive into the new update much. Spent all my free time just getting things back to how i like them.
Y'know, I don't even mind so much taking up more storage memory (that's what 8GB memory cards are for) but what the heck is taking up ~10MB more program memory than before??!?!
I know lots of people wont look at a product if it isn't free, but I don't mind paying for the 'better' software out there if need be. My searching for a replacement to the now defunct (for some strange reason) pBar brought me to "HandySwitcher" -- HandySwitcher - DinarSoft .. It's $10, but after a few minutes playing with the demo, it seems to be solid. Much faster and cleaner than pBar and others I have used.
Check it!
I can do one better... Magic Button version 2.1 works great, and is free!

I tried magic button and I wasn't too impressed. It seemed like it didn't integrate as smoothly as some other programs I've used -- even pBar. Maybe this is because I'm running RealVGA, maybe it's just the program.
After the visual disliking I didn't give it much of a functionality chance...
I'm getting an error in the USB driver installation. I follow the instructions exactly (disconnect the phone, install MITs drivers by the upgrade tool, put the phone into diagnostic mode, reconnect) and I get the following Found New Hardware Installation Error:
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
A service installation section in this INF is invalid
On the phone with Samsung, and they're generally useless...
Edit: Just got off the phone with Ellison at Level 3 Tech Support. Great guy, REALLY knows his stuff. I was waiting so long I decided to try the install on an XP Home desktop I have, which is a relatively fresh install. He figured this was the way to go... just too hard to deal with crazy configuration problems on my laptop. Anywho, worked like a charm, everything seems good to go!
So my advice for people who are having this problem is to try a different PC (hopefully with a fresh install).

That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Live preinstalled, extra menus, i havent needed net3.5 either... but thats still not enough.

I *believe* that the program memory starts out as 128m and the storage memeory starts at 256.
Then I believe the compressed image is placed in the program memory and what's left is what we see availible- so in theory the image is now 8mb bigger. Mostly MS bloat I'm going to vote- live, live search, the new IE. Then a little bit more to handle the new sim card menus and soft switching. And a little more for 'unlocked gps'. BRING ON THE KICHEN for custom roms- laughing.
then the image is uncompressed and put in storage memory and what's left there is what's availible to us.
Can you relate your GPS settings in Phone Services? Also, any settings for Google Maps or Bing/WLS? Haven't bothered to go outside with my phone yet, but want to make sure it's set up right before I even try.

FIRST - to enable GPS:
go to the phone screen:
menu
options
services tab
select GPS
press change settings button
select the dot for "LOCATION ON"
ok to save.
Now the GPS will share it's info with any program that asks- not just the 911 operator.
HARD RESETS apparently reset that setting- so dont assume if you have been fiddling that it stayed set.
to get googlemaps working:
when you first turn on google maps it will now approximate your location by figuring out which tower you are on and then looking at the signal strength to get an approviamte distance from the tower. It will make a blinking blue dot on the tower surrounded by a shaded blue circle that it guess you are inside. (sometimes the outer blue shaded circle wont be obvious becasue you are zoomed in small enough that the whole map is shaded.
to turn on gps- you have to change the settings- inside googlemaps- menu- >options -> gps settings. Set manually. Select com port 9 and 9600 baud.
now from menu- check the "use gps" options and sit back and enjoy.
When you first turn on the gps it needs to download a "map" of the gps sat constellation from one of the sats. They transmit the map over and over- it takes like 30-60 seconds. It needs to download the whole map in one shot. So if it gets interupted with 2 seconds left it has to start all over. So it helps to be out in the open and stay perfectly still for that first minute or two. Once it gets the map it just needs to get pings from the sats to get a fix. It needs a set of pings from 4 sats to get a 3d fix.
Bing>live search- you can set it manually with the same settings as google. OR some have had success with leaving it as is with it set to "allow windows to manage" (not sure of wording).
I'm not exactly certain how it works. But my understanding is that all the "files" that are placed in the storage memory when the image in the program memory is expanded (actually now that i think about it, i could be the other way around- it IS confusing)- aren't really files but rather there's like a hard coded memory map- and if you "delete" them you aren't really deleting them but rather just deleting the pointer to them.
Sort of like when you burn a CD-R but dont fill the disc- you can leave it open. THen later you can "delete" or edit a file on the disc but the reality is the original has been burnt onto the cd and since it's an "-R" you can't get that space back.
the only way to get more room is to edit the rom so the files are never there to begin with. Deleting has no effect.
We need to learn to COOK our own rom's.
you can delete files, and replace them. You're not looking at any pointer. If you overwrite the file with one that is not loaded into ram, that ram space will be freed up, but the os will hiccup as it looks for the file. I hate the shutter sound, so i overwrite the file with a blank one (same size/dates/etc). the new file does not get loaded into ram, but will get played when you take a picture. It causes a short delay in the picture being taken. hard reset will overwrite some files, but not all it seems. Um i'm tired so if that makes no sense i'll fix it...
I attempted the CE07 update last night - no joy. Running Windows XP Pro with SP3. USB drivers installed without complaint. Upgrade tool ran to completion with no errors. At the end of Step 5 after closing the Upgrade Tool the phone did not start a reboot. Did a soft reset, and the phone locked at the black screen with the Samsung URL and "CDMA Network Mode" in the lower left corner. Laptop can't communicate with the phone via USB. Called Verizon tech support. Did a hard reset. "Formatting ... Please Wait" never goes away. Took out the battery. Waited. Reinstalled battery. Hard reset - still locks at "Formatting". Verizon tech support says I need to take it to one of their Corporate sites to have the OS reflashed. I have not had a good experience with Verizon Wireless' store-front tech support. Can anyone offer me other options?
Thanks

Updated: My local 'Corporate' Verizon store said they were not allowed to reflash PDA for security reasons. Confirmed by another call to Verizon Wireless Tech Support. They are sending me a replacement. They promised it would have the CE07 update. I hope they are right - don't want to go through this again.

Update 090629: Replacement arrived today. Did NOT have the CE07 update. Spent an hour with Verizon Wireless Tech Support hoping to get some tips to prevent a recurrance. The Tech Support guy didn't know the update was available; could not find any notes about how to prevent problems. Bit the bullet, closed all security features, unplugged the Ethernet, took out the wireless USB mouse, took a deep breath and fired up the Upgrade Tool. Ran without a hitch. On reboot, phone again stuck on SAMSUNG screen. Would not respond to a hard reset. Here we go again.

Where is the shutter sound file? I looked extensively a couple months back and couldn't find anything. Could you post your "dummy" blank file? I hate that sound...

michaelk, as always, very thorough and informative. Got GPS working perfectly. Put the phone on the dashboard of my car and it managed to get a reading after a while even while moving. I have Bing & Google Maps working flawlessly (Bing has a cool "birds eye view" feature, by the way... can actually see what the buildings look like).
One note: Once you set it to "Location" (instead of "911 only"), the next time you reboot you get a message saying "be careful, programs can track you" or something like that. So I did that, and unfortunately had to hard reset the phone. Right after the phone booted on the hard reset, I got that "Location On" warning again. So the hard reset did NOT reset that setting for me. Interesting.
Another random note: In Outlook, you used to be able to select multiple emails for deleting by clicking and dragging from just below the last message (in the white space). For some reason that's gone in this release. Irritating.
