This is the same version I was using yesterday before the ROM update.. anyone else see this issue?

Anyone have any suggestions on a good task manager?

I'm using the built in one in aebutton plus.

I bought it to remap some of the buttons. But it also has a nice built in popup task manager (and you can use the button edit feature to call it- if i tap my windows button i get the start menu but i set it so a double tap pulls up the task manager)

Thanks for that. I'll be looking forward to seeing how you do after the upgrade. I'd love to have 74MB of free storage space now, but 30 seems to be the best I can do.

It's not as quick as my Freedom 2000 GPS keychain device, but the little I used it yesterday it was placing me in the right spots.

the chipset in this phone actually can do agps or "normal gps". that's why its complex to enable. VZNave uses the Agps feature of the chipset but other apps will go to the stand alone gps.

Being stadalone gps in a device not made specifically for it, it's bonud to be slow to get a cold lock.

I'm having a devil of a time getting the gps to work- been busy at work so haven't had 10 minutes to sit outside and get a lock- now I'm home and it's raining...

Anybody who hasn't upgraded yet, let us know what your program and storage memory shows. And then if you do upgrade, let us know if you see a memory different afterward.
It's always confusing but if i remember correctly, programs get installed to "storage" memory (like hte hard drive on a PC), and the program memory is like RAM in a PC.

anyone else know if windows live is running in the background by default- maybe it's a memory hog. I dont see any other new apps. (been busy with work so haven't had time to look too much)

Thankfully, most programs allow the user to choose between "device" and "storage card". The only program I have installed in my Saga's "device" memory is ICS, which really shouldn't be taking up much space. However, my free space only shows as 30mb. Scary.

The new GPS ability also isn't very accurate. It seems to get me to the general area where I am, but only within an couple thousand meters of accuracy. In contrast, my Garmin Mobile GPS receiver when connected to the Saga via BT get's me to within a few feet. Of course, that's using Garmin software. The only software I've tested so far with the new unlocked GPS is Google Maps.

if all you are getting with google is the shaded blue area that says 'within x feet' you aren't getting a lock from gps yet. Google is just figuring out what tower you are connected to (the center blinking blue dot)- and then based on the signal strength drawing that shaded area around the blinking dot. You also need to go to the menu and turn the gps on- unless you do that it settles for the tower method. You also seem to need to tell google maps to use com9- auto isn't cutting it.

If it ever get a gps lock the little blinking blue dot will be all by itself and move along the map with you.

getting a lock with google maps appears to take a very long time perhaps because google seems to give up too soon and maybe shuts down the gps.

I'm busy fighting good mobil messaging - so i dont have time to install bing (fomerly live search)- seems that can get a lock eventually.

I would be nice if Microsoft would go through VZWs certification process so it can use aGPS. VZNavigator gets a lock very quickly and it is very accurate.

Ok, I got a lock one time using Live Search/Bing yesterday and it was accurate.

Today I am unable to get a lock at all. Inside, in my car, even outside in perfect clear weather...

Nothing...

Weird... But trust me.. it did work once.

Ok, ya'll download this program. It shows you how many sats your GPS is grabbing.

http://www.smartphonefreeware.org/download/gps-test-1.04

I am getting about 8, but most of them remain yellow and some just creep above the line to turn green, so it seems like it's not getting a very strong signal.

Inside my house I am lucky to get one low powered sat.

I already did all that (I figured "let Windoze manage it" wouldn't be a good thing Google seems to track somewhat OK in urban areas, but it's way off in rural. Hard to keep an eye on things while driving, but it seems it only updates it's GPS readings every so many seconds (like 20 or 30), so that might be part of the issue. I don't think my issue can truly be tied to the GPS reception of the Saga until I try other apps.

Download GPS Test 1.04 for Windows Mobile Smartphone

I've had several gps units over the years (not cell phones)
Getting just one sat in a house is normal. Since the sats orbit in all different planes sometimes you might be able to get 3 or 4 on a window sill but inside a house you get beat.

you need 4 to get a fix.

I am thinking maybe you still have never got a gps lock but that you are just picking up towers. Do you get just a blue dot or the dot with a blueish shaded circle around it with something about "within X feet"?

In a city the towers are very close by so it can be pretty accurate. But out in the burbs they will be pretty far apart.

To get a "cold fix" from scratch the gps receiver has to download like 30-60 seconds perfectly. If it hiccups for a second then it has to start over at the next interval. So that first initial fix is very hard to get. A gps chip then stores some of that info to get "warm"fixes later that are much quicker. Not sure if the saga keeps the gps "fired up" to keep that data or if everytime we turn it on it has to start from scratch.

I'm not an expert but basically there's data that the receiver that gets from the sats that tells the receiver where in the sky to look for each bird like a "map"- that's what gets downloaded in the inital chunk. Then once the receiver knows where each satellite should be it can measure the distance to each satellite hearing just a "ping" from each sat. Once it knows where all the sats should be then it just needs to get those 4 sat's pings to get a fix.

When using agps- verizon servers sends that initial "map" to the phone over the data connection so the phone just needs the 4 pings and it locks right on- that's why agps is so fast to fix. There's other ways to get the data- but not sure if the saga has the ability. For example modern GPS receivers (like tomtom) download weeks of the "map" data over the internet in advance. HTC phones have an app called something like quickgps that Downloads the map data from an HTC server. (if someone has time would be interesting to see if a version from an htc phone with the same chipset as us would work).

So that first fix is tough and it's best not to be driving or near any tall buildings or stuff like that.

Semi-Bricked

Soooo... I semi-bricked my Saga somehow...

I tried using the updater with Vista x64, started updating and the power shut off. Might have just been a surge from my computer? Who knows...

Anyhow, now my keypad lights stay on, regardless of the phone's current power state (if the battery is in or plugged in,) it detects the phone as having all of the buttons pressed.

I was able to format somehow, but can't get into the os.

Going to VZW early tomorrow.
