I dunno, I love the unrivaled convienience of a smart-phone, so I was thinking of upgrading my old silver Q to a Saga which is wi-fi enabled, but now for the same price I can get a VZW-blessed HP netbook on contract, or even a MiFi router instead, and with LTE just around the corner, so to speak, with all these alternatives I'm totally decision-challenged here.
Might just decide to get a new battery for my old silver (gotta go online even for that, dammit) and stick with that instead until it croaks.

Verizon treats all of it's children equally badly. The omnia update was leaked, our closest thing to a leak is someone claiming they've seen the new rom (and we have no reason to doubt them).
Personally i think verizon is afraid of the potential of the new phones. There's a handfull of programs that provide tethering without VZW's $49 data plan, and the Sim card has them just confused.
Even without GPS and with the stupid FN lock bugs, this is still the best "phone" I've ever used by far, and i've had 14 years worth of cell phones.
VZW has 26 more days left in Q2... I expect we'll be waiting for most of them.

I wouldn't factor LTE into your decision. If you get something new NOW- you can get a new toy again in ~20 months. That will be right around when LTE is deployed fully. VZ has said so far that all the new devices would be data only things like laptop cards (maybe also netbooks?). So i dont expect any killer toys at first either if you happen to be in a lucky market that goes liver early.
So dont wait- RUN to get a new toy. If you wait another month or two that you start to get to a spot where you might be stuck on evdo for an ugly overlap while LTE is jumping.
Mid June is the latest date. It was supposed to be a few weeks ago but I guess it failed Verizon testing which seems to happen more then not...
I am not a fan of carrier provided updates.. but then who is. I guess that is what you live with as long as the carriers continue to provide the device support.
I heard this from a vendor who works on mobile stuff with Microsoft, but I guess Windows Update can do ROM updates and actually update your device without even wiping it and losing your data. Why doesn't VZW or ATT or whoever start to deploy updates this way. It would be so much easier then requiring ActiveSync which I don't deploy or forcing me to send out little MicroSD cards with the update to have people run... very annoying.

does seem to be par for the course that VZ fails stuff more often than not. Why I dont know becasue their versions frequently aren't any better then other carrier versions on the same device. So it's not like they actually test better. Must be things like they use the wrong font size to write "verizon" on the splash screens....

I don't know what the deal is.. They put out a couple of bad updates with the Treo 700Wx and I wonder if it made them gunshy?
I wish they would start using Windows Update... Now they they require a dataplan for new phones maybe they will.. Nah....
Why would the Big Red V allow us to utilize a tool that is on our phone already (Windows Update)? Why would they want us to perform an update without having to back up our phones and wiping them clean. Why would they want to fix the MANY problems that we've experienced. Why oh why oh why (Sorry, my frustration is showing).

...
they also put out bad roms for the Treo 700P and centro's too- some with the exact same issues that earlier sprint roms had addressed.
I suspect that they are TOO anal and insist on locking the code down very early on with a very long test cycle. I'm thinking when they find things rather then working through them incrementally with the OEM they force the OEM to start all over. End result is they have code that is months old for any particular device even the day after it is released. Since it takes soo long they have to let firmware in the wild that is not the best as long as it's 'good enough'.
The guy in charge of handsets should be fired and replaced with the guy who is in charge of the network.

I'm curious- can windows update rewrite the image in the rom or is it basically just overwriting files and so if you hard reset you go back to the original rom?
I dont know why they dont patch it as fixes come along (how about that one for the email bug- why that isn't pushed down to everyone automatically I can't figure...). - likely see above about anal and taking forever....
My guess is they also frequently need to update the radio along with the OS and probably you cant change the firmware with windows update. So we would still need radio updates to be down desctructivley. Sometimes you NEED the radio update- like i wouldn't be surprised if the GPS fix also has changes needed in the radio as well as in the OS.
But baby steps via windows update for more minor stuff would be much appreciated for sure.
I was hoping that LTE with SIM cards would change all this nonsense but seems like they are still saying LTE devices will need to be "approved" anyway. really the handset guy should be fired- did I say that yet?
I apologize for the delay and can understand wanting information to improve your devices functionality however; at this time Verizon Wireless does not offer the update for Saga. I am unable to confirm if or when it will become available as to not raise expectations that may not be met. I apologize for any inconvenience.
