Right Soft Key - Change it

Well I have finally got a chance to start poking around in the registry and starting to work on the MRailing i760 Phone Tools...

Currently there is no way to change the right soft key (you know that three dot key that corresponds to the soft key on the right hand side of the screen on the today screen that says "Menu").

Although I prefer the "Menu" because of what it offers very quickly, hopefully someone will be able to write a new "SoftKey.exe" file to modify the list and offer other choices.

Currently the assignment is located in the registry here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113

Change the "open" value to any EXE you want, currently mapped to "SoftKey.exe"

If you don't know what HKCU means, go to the WM2003 Setup Guide linked in my signature and read it, it explains information about editing the registry.

Also thought I would post and say that SoftKey Control Panel applet that I included in the MRailing i730 Phone Tools continues to work in WM6 (specifically on the i760), so it will be included in the MRailing i760 Phone Tools to allow easier changing of the right soft key without changing the registry.

How about my favorite Verizon Wireless answer of.... Soon...

but it depends... This is a hobby, so my work comes first. Luckily I have had some extra "multitasking" time to read up here and look at a few things, but it might take a bit. My goal, if things go as they should, means I should have this weekend to really work on the guide and the Phone Tools, some hopefully I should have it ready for testing by a few people over the weekend, and then maybe a general release next week.

I have a version put together already with many of my tweaks, but I still need to test a few of the settings to make sure they still work in WM6...

Lol, I assume it wouldn't take as long as the i760 took to come out.

Anyway, I appreciate the one you built for the i730 and anticipate the release for the i760.

This is an option, though not ideal.

Windows Mobile 5 utilities

I wrote the author, and this was his response.

"Hi, the app works under the wm6, but the default new SMS, email, etc.
actions don't work correctly. But there is an easy workaround for that:
create new item with command tmail.exe and parameters -service "<name>"
-to "", where <name> is a name of the transport (e.g. SMS, MMS, for emails, name of the account, synchronized emails have name Activesync).
-----
Saman"

I have this working for the left soft key, but I tried the registry edit you mentioned in the other thread and cannot get it to work in the right soft key. It does provide you with a customizable pop-up menu (similar to right soft key) for the left soft key which will open program, or sms, etc. Only issue now is it uses the program name from the Programs folder, so the left soft key's title is WM5Newmenu, and I can't figure out how to change that.

I have figured out how to change the name, just rename the .lnk file in the Start menu\Programs location. Still cannot get it to load in the Right soft key slot. Even installed the mRailing softkey app and that does not appear to be working either.

mRailing, does the SoftKey applet go in the same location as before? I installed there and the app runs fine, but does not change the soft keys. (I performed a soft reset after, too...)

I haven't played around with it much, and it might not work 100%, I just noted above that when installed and when I ran it, I saw I "could" change the setting, just didn't as of yet...

I should have time this Saturday, if I can get my stupid driver issue with Vista worked out, to finish the Phone Tools and the Setup Guide, as well as working on the FAQ update... Man I got a lot of stuff ahead of me...

Since you seem pretty savy in the land of registry edits I was wondering if you think this is posible. I want to create a registry that will turn the front key lights on when the power button is pushed. Possible?

Mrailing, you're the GURU and i am just a flunky, but shouldn't it be 112 instead of 113 for the right softkey. Best i can tell 113 is for the left.

Bump

I know most seem to be changing the Right soft key to a program of their choice, but I would still like to have a menu of options. I'd try to tear apart an .exe file myself, but I have zero talents in that area.

Alanb pointed me to this:

Document Management, Measure tool, Clipboard Enhancement, Email Tools, Mp3/Wma player, Lyrics, Pocket PC, PPC, SMS, FireWall, Smartphone, PDA

You might check it out, it does literally what you and I want...

Nope 112 is the left, 113 is the right.

Hmm, were you able to get this to work (or did Alanb get it to work)? I followed the instructions and yet nothing seems to replace the default right soft key menu. Do I also need to edit the registry along with installing this program? I couldn't get the app I prefer (WM5 NewMenu) to load on the right side either. I even went as far as to install the .exe for mentioned file in "113" and it still left me with the default menu. As a side note I did get the Newmenu app to work on the left soft key, so maybe I should just be happy with that... it just seems a waste of a soft key on the Today screen.

I was not able to get this to work on my i760 (worked great on my Q9M). I haven't had a lot of time to try and troubleshoot though.

Ok. See the attached screen shot and you will see why i am confused.

on another note, i have seen others request if the launcher program could be pulled from the i730. is it possible that we could put it on the i760 in place of the current right soft key menu and have a customizable right key? just a thought but i have no clue where to begin!

If I get some time this weekend I will play with it and see if I can get it to lock in to the right softkey. I have it on my SD card waiting to be installed, just haven't had the time to mess with it.
