Cache Internet Files to Storage Card

Using the same procedure that I did for WM5, I tried to map the internet files (Cookies, Internet, History) to the Storage Card.

When I changed the registry entry to point to the \Storage Card\Internet\Internet Files OR History OR Cache, WM6 did create the folders on the Storage Card. When trying to access the internet, my i760 would lock up requiring a soft reset each time. I returned the registry back to it's normal path (via a Sprite Backup V6). I can now surf the internet without a lock up.

Any suggestions?

Sorry Michael... I did not see/find those links.

I have read the links that you posted and it confirms instability when trying to cache internet files to a SD card.

My question now, where does WM6 cache the files too? Does it cache them to the Storage side or Program side since they do not have a SafeStore partition.
My Storage side shows 48.7MB free and the Program side shows 27.3MB free.

The registry shows a path for the Windows folder. That makes me think they files are being cached/stored on the Program side. Since I have quite a bit more room on the Storage side, I would prefer to move them.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I will probably create a section in my setup guide explaining the memory configuration on the device since so many people are getting confused.

Program Memory = This is the "RAM" of the i760. This is what programs on the computer have to access and use for a temporary place to swap files and where files reside while programs are running. This space fluctuates depending on what programs are open, and what you are doing. The memory is volatile, which means on every soft reset the memory clears out and as the i760 boots and programs load, it uses this memory again. This is the space that is used when programs open.

Storage Memory = This is the "Hard Drive" of the i760. This is flash memory that stays when a device loses power. This is where files are saved on the device, like when software is installed. This is where files are written.

So on the i730 because of the limitations of the OS and what space it was allowed to have, it had two "partitions" for Storage (or Main Memory), a SafeStore and a Main Memory area. When I created my MRailing Phone Tools, I saw that SafeStore was the same memory (flash memory) as Main Memory, and was basically an extension of Main Memory, just in a different area. It was 20 MB of basically wasted space. Although when you hard reset the PDA this memory wasn't touched and in fact had a separate program to "erase" it's contents. So since I wasn't planning on using this area for anything else, I moved the contents of the Internet Explorer Cache here, and also adjusted the cache sizes. This let me free up some of the space in Main Memory, yet still that cache was on the phone, and still giving me plenty of room in Main Memory.

Now on the i760, Safe Store is gone, and it's one combined storage area. So I am NOT planning on moving my cache files.

I personally don't recommend or like installing software to a memory card. One you could lose the memory card and there goes your software. I tend to be an accessory whore and I have a few memory cards that I swap around, and I don't like to have to install the same files on many different cards, and I also find that having software installed on the memory card (not just saved or data files) tend to make the device a bit more unstable. So I just install to the Storage Area, and then I copy the data files, or move them to the SD card.

Also WM6 puts the memory card to sleep to save power, and in doing so can break an application, so this is another reason not to install software on the card.

Just some things to keep in mind, and hopefully this explains the memory structure a bit better. I will plan on expanding on this in the setup guide, but for now, I highly recommend you leave the IE cache right where it is in storage memory.

Thank you Michael... As usual, your response was very detailed and informative.

I will leave the cache location as is. Do you then think that the cache limit (Content) should be reduced from the current 32922? I noticed that the Cookies size is 2048 and the History size is 1024. Both of those seem to be a decent size.

Again, thanks for all your help.

That is a "limit" of size. Remember some web pages are very large in size, and your cache is too small, if you reload the page, you reload a LOT of data. I currently have mine set to 8000 KB.

I am working on the Cache Issue, and am trying to see about moving the cache to the SD card since so many people want it there.
