Talking Location on? VZWNavigator?

Hello gang, I searched and searched and searched so now I am making a thread. In phone options under services then GPS then change settings it says location on or 911 only. Now I know that this phone doesn't have GPS but, I remember when I had my lgVX 8300 the VZWNavigator Needed to have location on to calculate my location, so my question is ... did I miss something and they are going to add VZWNavigator to this device like the Pearl or will this location be used for something different? Perhaps a hack so make live search/google maps see it?

Either way I'm loving the phone so far, smaller than I thought, but I do agree with some people that the slider needs to have more resistance. When I pull out the stylus I usually end up sliding it out some what.

But any input on the location function would be awesome thanks guys and gals

The question has been asked before but its anyone's guess if verizon would actually make VZnavigator available to this device. In the mean time you can most likely assume that the on board 'gps' will never be hacked and used for anything like google maps. The gps service is pretty much only for helping emergency services narrow down your area when you call 911. I believe a group on another forum was attempting to use the onboard gps but I havne't followed the project and since I haven't heard much about it I assume it likely never got completed.

The E911 locating ability is not traditional GPS -- it uses triangulation from cell towers. Since all phones are now required to have this, the existence of this setting on the i760 is not indicative of Verizon planning on implementing VZW Navigator. Also, regarding other apps, like Google maps, I do not recall any handset-based apps using this feature on any phone. I believe any apps that would utilize need to integrate with the network -- again, since it is triangulation based, not true GPS.

aGPS on cell phones is NOT just cell tower triangulation. It is a combination of cell tower triangulation AND satellite GPS. However, it requires cooperation with a location server at the carrier and does not provide the location data directly to any applications on the handset. That is why you need an app like VZNavigtor to use it.

There is a rumor that Verizon will be making VZNavigator and other location services available to Windows Mobile devices in the future, similar to how they added VCast Music to the Q9M.

In the mean time, there are lots of good, inexpensive, and small Bluetooth GPS receivers available that work with Google Maps, Windows Live Search, and tons of Windows Mobile navigation software.

I think that Navteq (sp) software takes advantage of it, for a fee. see if that meets your needs.

By itself, Navteq does not. You are required additional hardware.

VZNavigator is going to be available on the Q9c when it launches next month, and my understanding is that Verizon is working on a version of VZNav for the other Windows Mobile 6 devices soon to follow.

This caught my attention, any particular suggestions? Also, is their integration into google maps pretty seamless, anyone use this?

I finally found a BT headset I like, so have hesitated to use BT GPS fearing the two devices will not work well together. Pharos makes a BT adaptor/transmitter for the GPS unit I use now on my laptop. It seems to be a good setup. Can anyone tell me if they use a headset and other BT device concurrently?

I doubt this will happen. vCast doesn't require a good GPS fix to operate. Giving driving directions with an error of +/- 1000 meters would be a nightmare. I would not expect any GPS services to be made available to a phone without integrated GPS circuitry unless and until they get triangulation accuracy down to <2 meters or so.

Now, they may be doing just that, but I doubt it. There are so many variables on signal strength for triangulation that it would be very difficult/impossible to sort out exactly where you are a la GPS. Particularly in urban environments where there's plenty of things to get between you and a tower and create a mess of signal and noise.

Look a little further down though

Does NOT support automatic location detection (manufacturer did not enable either cell-ID or GPS support or device does not support Gears):

Verizon SCH-i760

Ahhhhh.... Thanks! "The fine print". Thanks Verizon! Why not Verizon? I guess they want to sell more services like Navigator. Sorry if this has already been covered.

FYI...vznavigator v4 is already available on the xv6800. I believe I saw on my worksite that the i760 is slated to have it mid to end november. For those of you who know me, this is not me sayint this for sure. This is something I am trying to remember. But FOR SURE it is available on the 6800.

Is VZNavigator a subscription based application, or does it just use our data package? If it's subscription based, what are the monthly charges?

Thanks!
