Ok, a LOT of new users are showing up here, and this is your first "converged" device, or you are moving from another device to the i760. Well as a step towards my setup guide, and in short of holding your hand, let me give you some advice, and give you a hand on getting the most of the i760.
1. Be patient. This is important because a
Windows Mobile 6 Professional (formerly Windows Mobile
Pocket PC) device isn't something that is a "simple" device. It's not a plug and use device, it takes some setup, it takes some tweaking, it takes some time to get to know how to use it. Don't think of this as a take out of the box and I won't have any issues device...
2. Search. Yes I preach this, but seriously, you will find answers. The i760 isn't that far from WM5 on the i730 or 6700, so many of the issues with syncing, WiFi, management, contacts, calendar, etc, all will carry over to the i760. So make sure you branch your searching to those forums as well.
3. Setup Guide. Until I get the i760 guide written, use the link in my signature and go read the WM2003 and WM5 i730 setup guides (don't load the phone tools). They contain a LOT of information, and it still applies to the i760, but I will eventually have a device specific one available.
4.
Don't do anything to the device when you get it. First ACTIVATE IT! (make sure your previous device is OFF, take out the battery) This is important. Call, get it activated, follow the yellow sheet of paper that came in the box, do the *228 option 1 (or *22899, it's the same thing) and get your phone working. Do a test call. See how it works, then you are going to hard reset it...
5. Hard Reset. Yeah, we are going to fully hard reset it. This will start it up, and make it better. Mine didn't prompt me to align the screen when I turned it on at first, and it was out of alignment. It also seemed to run better after the hard reset, so I suggest you hard reset. Look that the FAQ in the Yellow Header above the forum, it tell you how to hard reset.
5. Setup and Sync. Enter the basic information (refer to the i730 setup guides) and sync the device. If you are having problems syncing, search in the i730 forum for "activesync problems" or refer to this Microsoft Article (ALSO NOTE, ActiveSync 4.5 is for Windows 9X/2000/XP, and under Windows Vista you will need the
Windows Mobile Device Center - WMDC):
ActiveSync Help & How Tos
6. Don't install any software. Use the device as is for a few days (if not longer). Don't try to do anything on it, get a feel for how it runs, the speed of things, how the internet works, etc. Putting software on the phone can really cause issues, and you won't know if it's the phone or the software causing the problems.
7. Setup Push/Pull E-mail. After using the device (or if you need it now) setup push/pull e-mail (push meaning Wireless Sync or Exchange Email, pull meaning a POP/IMAP account that you go and fetch the mail).
8. Add one, ONLY one, piece of software at a time. Don't install every piece of software that you THINK you need, just pick one, install it, play with all the options of it, and see how it reacts on the device. This is important, because as mentioned previously, software can destroy the stability of a device. Use the new software for a day or two, see if it messes with email delivery, the phone app, etc.
9. Read and Participate. Come here daily, read the threads, and participate. This is one way to find out what you can do, and what is happening with new tweaks and setups.
10. Know (get to know) Windows Mobile 6. This is something that is important. Learn the OS, get a feel for what the OS does, and doesn't do. During the first testing portion of the device, learn what each of the settings apps do and what they change. Learn where things are located on the device. Open software and check out ALL of the settings, learn what everything does.
11. Play... Simple as that. Best thing to do is play. Then you will say, ok, I have played with everything, will this thing do this? What about that? I heard about SlingPlayer, what is that? Come here and read and try...
Hopefully this will help get you going until I can get the full guide written. Check out the FAQ in the yellow header above the main forum. Read the Stickies. Read threads, even if you don't think they interest you. Read and Search are the two things that will make you an expert. Remember we were all newbs once....
