Exactly. I use the Messaging button to quickly access my Outlook and MMS at this point. I'd like to do the same with SMS.
Gotcha. Since I don't have a data plan, I don't do any email on my phone... so it didn't occur to me that lots of people may have the envelope button point to email instead of SMS. I understand your concern, now.
From a software standpoint, there are two points of view: Having outlook handle the Threaded SMS app would be harder than having a 3rd party app handle outlook and SMS separately. I'd pursue the latter.
It wouldn't surprise me if there are plugins that let you customize mini start menu-esque apps for various soft buttons. For instance, if you press the envelope, you would be presented with an SMS/MMS/email menu... or each press of the envelope would scroll through SMS -> MMS -> email -> SMS...
I used 05GOAT directions and works perfect. I've been sending and receiving SMS and MMS without 1 problem since I installed it 2 - 3 weeks back. I used the SMS app from this link : Thread sms- 1 step cab install - 2 awesome versions - WM Experts
I installed the email softkey one.
And yes when I use MMS there are 2 MMS selections. The one that says Enter A Signature here is your original one that came with the phone that will work. The other one that just says MMS will not work at all.
Been away from this forum for a few weeks and trying to catch up installed the cody version and everythings seems to work. The issue\question I have it this app always wakes up my phone regular SMS did not in the past. I don't lock the phone so once it is turned on all the button are active. if I don't hear the SMS other applications activate or my I found I made unplanned phone calls. Are there any options in PA or the Threaded app that prevent SMS from waking the phone?
I ran a quick text with Extreme Text and SMS Threader. Both of them fail to recognize screen taps for opening a thread...I had to use the DPad and center button to select. No amount of single, double, triple, press and hold would open them. Weird that this is a problem in both apps.
Also on Extreme Text...I like that is uses the same database as the default SMS program but I don't like the little 'bubbles' in the thread (sorta like cartoon ballons). It truncates the messages in the bubbles, so you have to 'open' that section of the tread to read the whole message. Seems sorta silly, why not just display the whole thing, it's only 160 characters.
Both these apps seem promising but since I can't use my touch screen, they are useless. I'll bookmark them and try them again when a new version is released.
I usually don't bother to even take my stylus out when SMS'ing. I have found that the use of the 4-way pad and center button is very efficient and user-friendly.
I understand that we all use our phones in different ways... I'm just asserting that I, personally, have found it to be very easy to use and appropriately set up... although I do complain that new messages that are dismissed from the today screen are left as NEW messages, until you go into the SMS app and view them. I think dismissing the message should mark it as read. Any suggestions for this?
I haven't used Extreme Text... I have been using the "cody" version of the SMS program. I have found that this app does seem to use the default vocabulary, but it also learns my phrases. For instance, when I type "l"... "love ya" is a suggestion. Also, it seems to learn common strings of words. For instance, if I type "have", "an" is a choice, and then "doctor's appt" since I typed those words adjacently in the past. I think this is a pretty cool feature, because it will suggest your most popular phrases, making it quick and easy to send a common message.
In regards to Dismissing a msg....don't dismiss it, instead use the right Menu button and choose Save as Read...that clears the notification and marks the message as read. I use that all the time when I'm not replying.

Interesting...
I believe I have used that... but it requires more than one click/tap. If I recall, it's "right menu button > control pad to select "mark as read" > center button. That cuts my productivity to 33%! (loose Simpsons reference, for those that get it)
Oftentimes, I'm getting texts in class or at work, and I cannot spare any extra time spent with my attention diverted, else I find myself a disruption.
Realistically, I probably just have to get used to doing it the other way.
Thanks for reminding me.

Press right menu, click Save as Read with fingernail...productivity back to 50%....=)
I guess although it does require a few extra clicks or taps, it's still easier than going into the SMS app, opening the message so it's marked as read, then exiting out of the message and then exiting out of the app. At least for me.....but like you said, we all use our phones slightly different.
I knew I wasn't crazy... I just got a dinner invitation text messaged to me, and pressing the right menu button ("dismiss" on the screen) just DISMISSED the text message. I wasn't given any options, such as "mark as read." The left menu button says "Go To" and simply takes me to the appropriate sms thread.
Does the status of the SMS app have anything to do with what menu options are available? For instance, if it is closed, minimized, or active when the text message arrives? My phone was on the today screen when I received the message. The weird part is that I know I've seen "mark as read" as a right menu button option, but I don't know if it was since my last hard-reset and reinstall of everything.
Are there multiple versions of the SMS app? I'm intrigued by this...
It should also be mentioned that I have the SPB phone suite and phone shell installed, if that makes a difference.
i've been having issues with the threaded sms where people have told me that they've received the same message three times on different occasions when i only sent it once. i've installed the threaded sms program from the second post of this thread....help?
It must have to do with the threaded app you are using changing the soft menu buttons.....I have been hesitant to try it due to the fact that I use MMS alot and don't want to have any issues.....
So stock...when I have a txt notification, the right menu button says "Menu" and in the list is the 'Save As Read'.
The one problem I have with almost all the threaded sms programs is that if i turn it to landscape while in the chat window, it scrolls up when it readjusts to make the picture landscape. Which defeats the whole purpose of threaded sms lol any solutions?
Hey guys, I'm a newbie here. I tried to scan through the previous posts quickly but didn't see anything. Basically I just want to know if anyone has found anything similar to that what was on the Treo 650. I downloaded SMS threader but since I have Opera as my default browser it acted weird and touch screen didn't work for it (lame!) Any consensus on a good SMS threader? Just curious because that's a lot to read through.
On page 1 something was good, and then on page 3 you find out it wasn't so great, and this is better. Who knows what came after. I was hoping that a definitive consensus had been reached. Seems like not yet.
It's my understanding that the SMS Threader application for which the tutorials were outlined was ripped from a Palm Treo... So if you're looking for something like what's on the Treo 650, that should be pretty close.
I had a Treo 650, and I know it's not the SAME program... but it's pretty good. For instance, I didn't have pictures of my friends attached to their text messages. I'm using the "cody" version of the SMS Threader app.
Installed the Palm rip and made the subsequent registry changes and the app works just as advertised. There *are* a couple of issues I'd like to work on however.
When I receive a text, the phone vibrates no matter what the setting is on. I have explored every menu I could think of and vibrate is turned off in all of them. Any body else have this issue?
Second, when I receive a text and press dismiss, the message is marked on my today screen as unread. This is inconvenient, because often times I will be busy with something and dismiss a message only to forget to reply later because the today screen displays "no unread messages." The regular sms app functioned in this way.
I can't seem to stop this program from turning the device on when I get a txt rather then just beeping or vibrating. If I don't acknowledge the txt the phone is fully active and frequently makes calls or opens other apps in my pocket. I am using it with Phone Alarm does anyone else have this issue or know how I might change this. Otherwise it works perfect.
