Would this GPS receiver work with Copilot? The receiver I have now takes forever to connect to satillites. Sometimes it won't ever connect.

maybe freedom can't post this...

but I don't see why I can't! It's a very nice promotion that they are doing. Here's the link:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gps-...ps-2000-a.html

I just sent Chris an e-mail about getting one. I just hope I can get one quick, as my current receiver is not working (and I'm constantly lost)

Just curious, has anyone used this device (Freedom GPS 2000) yet? I'm curious about how the MTK chipset compares to Sirf-Star III in terms of sensitivity, especially in dense urban areas. I currently have a Sirf-Star II GPS device which is terrible here in NYC and am looking to upgrade for use with my i760.

Thanks.

I really like my Freedom Mini GPS. One complaint - I find the single lcd trying to simultaneously convey info on bluetooth connection and gps signal confusing. The darn thing is blinking different colors at different rates.

I see the new 2000 has 3 separate lcds - presumably 1 each for battery, bluetooth and gps signal.

I found this:

G p s P a s S i o n

However, it would be nice to hear some side-by-side comparisons of the two Freedom receivers.

With googlemaps 2 it shows at the top right corner the total data transfer, along with the number of satellites that are seen by your gps. At least with a Delorme earthmate BT20.

Just ordered the new one. Doesn't look to be THAT much of an upgrade other than form and chipset. I'll let you know when I get it in!

Good find. The SirfStarIII Vs MTK comparison really does depend on where you live. In most areas they are identical (or so close that it makes no difference). In a few areas though it has been reported that the MTK Chipset performs better then SirfStarIII. It is likely though that there may also be areas where the SirfStarIII performs better then MTK.

I could do a comparison between the two if people are interested but as I work for Freedom it is not likely that people are going to take it at face value

We do have a special offer for members of this forum and for one other forum until Christmas. Unfortunately we can not post the details on this forum though due to the rules about advertising/selling on the forums.

There should be a review of the new unit coming soon and we will hopefully be able to give you the offer on the tail end of that.
How do I get in on that special offer? I am very interested in purchasing one of the new units.

I have the Holux M1200 and it is pretty darn small with the MTK chipset. I put it on my keychain.

Best bet is to drop Chris an email, Chris@freedominput.com and she can send you the details and paypal button.

Just done a very quick test on two brand new units right out of the box. It must be said that this is not a very scientific test. It only gives a rough idea of performance from a cold start and satellite acquisition from a static location. Also neither unit was charged prior to testing so was running from whatever charge they had out of the box.

It should also be mentioned that this as done from my office next to the window.

Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 (MTK):
Cold start Time: 37 seconds

Satellites in view at 1 minute: 10
Satellites being tracked at 1 minute: 7

Satellites in view at 2 minutes: 10
Satellites being tracked at 2 minutes: 7

Satellites in view at 3 minutes: 10
Satellites being tracked at 3 minutes: 7

Freedom Keychain GPS (original SirfStarIII):
Cold start Time: 50 seconds

Satellites in view at 1 minute: 9
Satellites being tracked at 1 minute: 4

Satellites in view at 2 minutes: 9
Satellites being tracked at 2 minutes: 5

Satellites in view at 3 minutes: 9
Satellites being tracked at 3 minutes: 5

So the MTK based GPS unit had a slightly quicker cold start time and "saw" and tracked slightly more satellites. However just to reiterate that this was from a static location and in terms of actual use they both gave me exactly the same co-ordinates. Also the GPS signal quality in this area isn't great.

Comparison of signal strength:

I was checking out the two Freedom GPS units and noticed on their webpage that the new Freedom GPS 2000 has less protocols listed. Does this matter?

Not really. Every piece of commercially available navigation software I can think of uses NMEA. The other ones are pretty much never used (NMEA is basically the industry standard).

I am interested in the size difference between the GPS 2000 and the original. Could you post a picture of the two devices next to each other? I think others would also like to see such a comparison. I have the original on my key chain and the size is amazingly small; but in this case...smaller is better

Not brilliant photos I'm afraid as they where taken with my crappy camera phone. Gives you an idea of the size difference though.
