I may be purchasing the samsung sch-i760 smart phone soon (this would be my 1st) and need some advice. One of my co-worker's owns this samsung and mentioned it only accepts a maximum of 2GB micro-SD chip. This concerns me as a few of the others I am considering buying also have more maximum memory capacity. I read through the posts in this thread and as a smart phone newbie, I must confess I am a little overwhelmed with all the information. I am trying to decide if I should buy the samsung phone and the answer to the memory question will help me decide. Can someone post
(in smartphone-laymans terms--for someone who has slightly above average PC skills) understand the bottom line solution before I can decide on deciding whether or not I should buy this phone:
1) What is the SDHC hack specific for the i760 and what are the step by step instructions to load the hack?
OR
2) Can a 4GB chip be used as was mentioned in this previous post (see quote below)
---Does this quote mean the hack isn't neccessary afterall, and I just need to format the chip on my PC? Either way, please post steps to do this also..
Thank You
If you look several posts above you'll see Robrect say "As mentioned above, you only need to download extract and install the sdhc CAB file graciously provided by Nemanracing in Post #41 at the top of Page 3 of this thread. When done properly, that will allow your i760 to happily use all 4 GB of a SanDisk 4GB microSD HC card. No offense, but most Verizon employees couldn't guess their way out of petunia convention on the moon in the middle of winter". (Lol )
The step by step way to get the hack working on your phone is the way way you'd install any cab file (software that can be installed right FROM your phone as opposed to an exe file that needs to be installed to your device on your laptop/PC through either ActiveSync or the Windows Vista Mobile Center that comes with it ). All you would need to do is
1) Download the cab file where nemanracer posted it as stated above on your laptop/PC. Extract the file if its a .rar (winrar) file, by doubling clicking on it, an moving to your desktop. From there/or if it just is the cab file (with the .cab extension on the end) itself and is not a winrar file that needs to be extracted then..
2) Copy and paste the file to your i760 either through ActiveSync if you have Windows XP or if you have Vista the Mobile Center that already comes on it. The way to do it on ActiveSync is to click "Explore" go to "Device ...." and paste it into either Safestore or your SD Card in there by right clicking and selecting paste.
3) Now go to your i760, use the File Explorer program (I assume its on there as I'm not planing on getting one) by going to Start-Programs-File Explorer and using that to navigate to Safestore or your SD Card, whichever place you decided to put the cab file.
4) Now use your stylus or click with the dpad on the sdhc.cab file, and it will ask you to install it to Device Safestore or your SD Card. Choose "Device".
5) Now restart by either clicking "Ok" if it asks you to restart, or put your stylus in the hole wherever it is located on the device or however you can soft reset/reboot your device. NOW you should be able to put any 4GB MicroSD Card into your i760 and it should work.
I don't believe you can get a 4GB MicroSD Card working in your device without the SDHC Hack as far as I know. Again, I don't have an i760 but that's what I saw based on peoples reports here.
Are you pretty sure about this upper memory limit for the i760? I'm completely new to smart-phone computing, but the user manual for my new Samsung i760 seems to suggest that the upper limit for microSD cards is 2 GB (page 106). Or does that reference mean something else altogether?
I just bought the Patriot MicroSDHC 4GB card from Fry's and applied the .cab patch to my i760 and it works fine. The problem that I am having is when I put the card into the SD adapter and try to read it with my Vista computer it cannot see the card. Only the phone can see the card. Anyone else having this issue? Same with Windows XP. Might be the card reader but I am not sure.

The way to test that would be to insert a 2GB card first and without installing the CAB file and see if Vista sees the card. THEN, you would proceed with seeing if you can see it with Vista with the CAB file installed. OR, you could uninstall the CAB file and see if Vista sees it that way first.

You could try downloading SDHC Laptop/Support and or try another Card reader like you suggested. Somehow I think adding that support to my PC helped me read them at one point..I think. I cant remember right now, but maybe just something to try before spending some money?

not sure why you would need to do this anyway.you can go into file explore in active sync and see whats on the sd and add or delete from there.

It's just easier sometimes if you're managing multiple cards and devices. My home laptop has a SD card reader built in, my car stereo plays mp3s through a USB-SDHC adapter, my wife's phone also has a SDHC card (6GB cards work in the new Chocolate even though their specs only say 4GB), and I'm thinking of getting headphones that take an SD-card directly. So it's sometimes easier to deal directly with multiple cards rather than work through ActiveStink.
not to mention activesync is as slow as the phone (USB1 IIRC) whereas readers are USB2 which makes a HUGE difference when moving large files. I know this because my old card reader wont read the new sdhc card, so I have to transfer converted movies via active sync...it takes a LONG time to transfer a little 300 meg file.
Has anyone with a 6gb card attempted something similar to the following:
1. Installed the HC patch from this thread or one of the ones linked in the thread.
2. Used a card reader or some other device to load up >4gb worth of some type of data (eg music).
3. Placed the storage card back in the phone.
4. Looked at the storage card either with a file explorer on the phone or with WMP searching for music.
^,^^ I wonder if it is all dependent on whether the phone needs to write anythign to the storage card. I wouldnt' doubt that WMP writes something to the storage card when playing music. Maybe it does some writing to keep track of the last time a file was played, or if you change the rating...
Has anyone tried playing music files on a more basic audio player that may not do any writing while playing the file?
I know this solution would def not be ideal... but it may further the udnerstanding of the problem and may be useful if someone only uses their memory card for music playing abilities...
I just installed the cab file in to my i730 and it reads the 4 gb sdhd card with no problems.
What a good day, installed a fix for my dell laptop to read SDHC, works perfect..Installed your drivers to my i760 and perfect as well. PayPal'd some gratitude money. Thanks.
The class number shouldn't matter as that just defines how fast the card is...like computer memory, the card will only work as fast as the memory interface in the phone. Not sure what the spec is on the microSD port is...
so... I'm curious as to whether or not anyone has figured this out yet. does it do any good purchasing a micro-sdhc card of a higher class for the i760? it would be nice to be able to write at 4 or even 6mbps.
also, I've read through this entire thread before posting and I've noticed that some people have had better luck with retail boxed Sandisk cards over bulk A-data and Patriot cards. Anyone have any experience with the Kingston cards? I read a post a few up that someone purchased the class 4 4.0gb micro-sdhc Kingston card from newegg.com. that's the one i want to get, but I want to make sure it works okay first.
