Are you really willing to pay an extra 80-130 for better CS? I completely agree that VZW has better CS but that isn't worth the extra money. Right now I definitely have better EVDO in my everyday areas (NY metro) which completely surprised me. Let's face it. If Sprint carried a 760 we would all buy it. They probably eventually will but it would be a tough wait. The Mogul is definite upgrade to the 730 and anybody that says otherwise has used both enough to determine that. I can't comment on the 760 but I like the fact that it is slimmer and keys on the front and will have the rugged "Samaung" feel. The extra buttons on the 6800 make navigating it a dream compared to the 730. Not sure if the 760 has these extra buttons.

My problem with Sprint is, service area for voice, and service area for EVDO. I currently have EVDO in my home town with Verizon, Sprint does not. I know all of the areas I get service with Verizon, and I know for a fact, Sprint doesn't have service in all of those areas. So I will continue to pay 80-130/month more for actually being able to use my phone, over being frustrated and not being able to use it, and most of all, not having EVDO in my home town...

That completely makes sense for people with spotty Sprint service. When I bought the 730 a couple of years back I tried Sprint and had to return the phone because I had horrible service in the areas I now have great service. This was 2-3 years ago mind you. I saw your post on VZW changing their policy on changing your plan with regards to contract end date. While that is awesome news. Sprint is still cheaper by far. I wish VZW would get their act together. Chances are in 2 years when my SERO contract is up VZW will be better.

Another strike against mogul/Sprint is that they do not have a free "redirector" wireless sync software. I spent a few hours trying to get activesync push working on our exchange server at work, but to no avail. I think there is something messed up on our server since the activesync properties pages are all grayed out in the exchange control panel. I hate VZ's wireless sync, but at least it's worked relatively well for me for the last few years.

Does Sprint plan on developing similar software?

Exchange 2003 and 2007 work like champs right out of the box. Are you sure it is enabled/installed on the server? Is your user enabled for it? Both Verizon and Sprint and probably most providers have crappy programs. I can't think of one useful proggy from either company. HTC and Samsung have some occasional winners. i.e. Samsung Picsel. I  the Exchange 2007 and WM6 combo!

I am sure it is installed. I also followed a few different "how to" pages on setting everything us with certificates and such. Nothing seems to work.

I suspect it's not configured correctly because when I go to the properties page of activesync in the exchange control panel, all options are gray/not changeable.

I suspect some of the problem is due to our upgrade from exchange 2000 to 2003 sp2.

Looking around, I did find this free open source sync software that may work instead: Funambol

After using the Mogul for a few days, I decided to give it up and wait it out for the i760. Two reasons. Although Sprint doesn't have horrible coverage here, it's still not as strong as VZ.

The second, and main reason, is that I am not happy with the Mogul. I'd rather keep my 730 than the Mogul. The touch screen isn't nearly as nice/sensitive/accurate as on the 730, it's easy to accidentally press buttons, the keyboard buttons have little/no tactile feedback (can't always tell if you depressed a key), it actually seems slower than the i730 in some situations, and almost everything about it feels cheap (like it will break within a month). I tried to keep an open mind and wanted to like the phone, but couldn't do it. Maybe I've been spoiled by the 730. So, my only real option is to wait it out for the 760 (unless some kind soul is willing to sell me theirs early )

It would be a downloaded app--probably with an extra charge for usage, knowing VzW. VZ Navigator is specific to VzW. The thing is, for 100.00 or less, you can get a portable small BT GPS that you can use with free Windows Live or Google maps.

When I ordered my i760 yesterday, the b2b rep mentioned that VZW may offer both Vcast and VZnavigator later this month for the phone.

I think the 4 new "next" phones offer both, so it seems likely.

I am trying both the 6800 and the i760 for 30 days, and we'll see which I like better...here are my thoughts so far...

Network...V doesn't work well in my hilly neighborhood (San Diego area)...if I switch the phone to the ear away from the window, the call drops, but S works fine almost everywhere. There must have been an improvement since I gave it up years ago.

Keyboard...I love the 6800 keyboard. I can type on it very fast. I am writing long-ish notes and letters on it comfortably. The i760 keyboard feels very strong, but you have to push harder, so it takes longer to type, and not as effortless. The 6800 also has extra keys that I seem to use a lot, so it wins this one.

Size...the 6800 again...the dimensions are almost the same except that the i760 is longer. Finally, the difference is not significant for me.

Phone features...i760 all the way. Of course there is the number pad, but even if you are using the touchscreen, it seems like you are actually dialing, but with the 6800, the response time is random, so you don't feel like it is taking the #, then finally it starts to register. Retarded might be the word. In general, it seems like the i760 understands that it is a phone, so it works like one, and feels like one.

Call quality...the i760 is good, but I like the 6800 even better. The sound is great- better than cell phones are...the speaker is not too loud, but easy to hear...I hate loud noises, so I may be more sensitive to this than others, though. The i760 sounds like a good cell phone, and you won't be unhappy with it, but the 6800 is excellent.

Overall quality impression...the i760 seems like it is built like a tank- almost like military grade. The 6800 doesn't feel too bad, but I would expect the Samsung to outlast the 6800.

Speed...they both seem to have their issues. The i760 seems to access the internet much faster, at least in WiFi mode (yes, I know...wait for Rev A.), and the screen somehow seems more responsive than the 6800, but the i760 seems to freeze for maybe 5 seconds. I guess I can live with both situations without much grumbling.

Camera...the 2MP camera should be better than the i760's 1.3MP camera, but the Samsung photos seem better, at least on the screen, which is much brighter anyway. I haven't checked what the pictures look like from a PC, but the color is flat, or worse.

Overall, the HTC seems like a PDA with phone capability, and the Samsung seems like a phone with PDA capabilities.

My decision? Stay tuned, but here are my thoughts now...

SERO=muy bueno, especially with 2 people. I'll see what the new plans are once they are revamped. I doubt they will go to 7pm evenings, though. On the other hand, I know many more ppl on VZW than Sprint, and I'd have to buy out my girlfriend's VZW contract (especially since I recently convinced her to upgrade to a new phone, even though she liked her old VZW phone just fine.)

I love the 6800 keyboard, and don't mind typing my "great thoughts" at 2am on it even if it takes a while. The i760 buttons take longer to push for some reason, and it's not as enjoyable.

HTC durability worries me, especially since I spoke to one other person who has it, and their center button failed, so anecdotal evidence is against it (maybe $7/mo for insurance will be on my menu). I like the overall feeling of quality from the i760.

It is nice to make and receive calls from my house, where Sprint's coverage is OK, and VZW's is pretty much terrible.

From this list, it seems like the 6800 works better for me, unless I discover something dramatic.

I'm sure I won't go wrong with either choice, so I'll probably save the $ with SERO.

If I have left out anything obvious, let me know, I still have a few weeks with the 6800 before I have to make a final decision.

Joe

Have you tried a newer Sprint plan with free voice & data roaming on Verizon?

XV6800 vs SCH-i760

At the moment these phones can be seen as the most capable phones that Verizon has to offer. I was able to have both in my possession for a few weeks and managed to settle on the XV6800 as my top choice. I was pleased with my trusty ol' SCH-i730, but battery life was horrific and numerous weekly hard resets became the norm after a while. Before going into detail on my review, both of these phones (6800, 760) have very similar feature sets. The only notable differences on the retail package boxes is the 2MP camera on the 6800 as opposed to the 1.3MP on the 760.

Performance:
Both seem to be righ about on par. The 760 might be a tad faster, however I am honestly unimpressed. I expected to see something much faster than my 730, but the difference was only slight. Part of my discomfort was having to wait for the screen orientation to change every time the keyboard is exposed or hidden. This is the same for both phones.

Physical Quality:
The 760 is sturdier than the 6800. The sliding mechanism, feel, and weight of the 760 make it feel solid in your hand. The battery cover on the 6800 is the flimsiest piece of plastic I've ever seen on a consumer product, however I haven't heard any reports of damaged covers. It is somewhat difficult to swap batteries on the 760 (no battery cover door). I thought I was going to break the tabs every time I had to install a battery. The sync/charging port on the 760 is covered with a rubber plug when not in use.

Battery Life:
First of all, the 760 is shipped with a standard and an extended battery. The 6800 only comes with one standard battery. I wasn't able to fully test both on the 760, but battery life is much improved over the 730. It appears to me that both phones should last you at least a full day before needing a recharge (~2 hrs talk time, 10 hrs BT, 1hr data, 20min e-mail check interval). According to comments in forums here, however, most agree that the 6800 has the edge on battery life over the 760.

Camera:
1.3MP on the 760 vs. 2MP on the 6800. Quality is significantly better on the 6800 for obvious reasons. A plus for the 760 is that is allows you to use the numeric keypad to change camera properties without having to touch the screen as is necessary in the 6800.

Wireles Protocols:
Both phones have bluetooth and wifi. The 6800 has what appears to be short-range IR, and a button on the side of the phone that is linked to "communications manager". This program provides a very simple way to enable/disable all wireless protocols for the phone. On the 760 you need to access the menu via on-screen shortcuts. And yes, there are programs out there that let you remap buttons to make them do whatever you want, but the 6800 does this right out of the box.

Keyboard:
Both have QWERTY keyboards, but the similarities end there: The keys on the 760 are sturdier, smaller, and have a rubberized texture to them. Those on the 6800 are larger, softer, and are plastic. The 760 has an external number pad which the 6800 lacks. The 6800 has a function key which allows you to access a number pad from the keyboard. I found it very uncomfortable to have to extend my fingers onto the number pad on the 760 when typing. The 760 also provides a function key for number typing, but they are aligned along the top of the keyboard, not as in a number pad, making it uncomfortable to use for multiple number entries. In favor of the 760, when the phone is slid closed, it is very easy to make a call using the external number pad. On the 6800, you can only use the number pad in the keyboard or the on-screen keypad. There is a dialer skin out there for the 6800 (big button dialer) that gives you a big keypad on-screen to make it easier to dial numbers when on the run.

Screen:
Some claim the 760 is better but for my eyes the difference is meager. I don't have any personal experience, but I have seen report on the forum that the 6800 screen is better in sunlight. When you press the 760 screen the LCD colors are distorted. Similar pressure on the 6800 results in no color distortion.

Memory Card:
Both use Micro SD.

Power/Sync port:
760 - Samsung proprietary
6800 - USB (similar to that used in portable GPS units)

GPS:
Claims have it that the 6800 has a built-in GPS chip that cannot be accessed - yet. Maybe in a couple months?

ROM:
6800 - 256 mb - 172 accessible for files/programs (core ROM editable)
760 - 128 mb - 54.5 accessible for files/programs (core ROM not editable)

RAM:
6800 - 64 mb
760 - 64 mb

Reception:
The 6800 usually showed less bars than the 760, however this might be due to how reception is measured on the phones. I did not see any more or less dropped calls on either phone.

Button placement:
This was the main deal-breaker for me. The 760 has buttons everywhere. I'm sure I could grow accustomed to it with time, but every time I grabbed the phone, I had at least two fingers on different buttons. They are not logically laid out and never made any sense to me. The 6800 has a scroll wheel where most of us expect the volume control buttons to be. I can pick up the phone and not have a finger on any of the buttons. The call answer/dial and end buttons in the 760 are on the edges of the phone - it is difficult to open or close the slider without touching them at some point. The power button on the 760 is in the least logical of places - on top of the phone. It took me a while to look for the power button on it when I first took it out of the box, until I finally gave up and went for the manual - a first for me! The 6800 seems to be the easiest to use for one-hand operation. For those of us that are previous crackberry owners, the thumbwheel will come in very handy.

$$
The XV6800 costs $50 more than the 760
