I am afraid I may be another victim of the substitution effect I picked up a pn820 to test last week and I might not return it. It doesnt have the tweakability factor like a ppc but I carry it in my pocket. If I can BT tether it to a nokia n800 I might wait til later this year to get a 760. Of course the 760 might not come out til later this year
I have to laugh. I had a demo for 2 months Worked Great. Bought one on 6/6 and i do have BT headset issues (that worked fine with the demo). but in general its a good one to keep ya going till the Next best thing comes along.
Its hilarious........this i760 is a brick even before VZW is ready to launch. just a quick recap>>>>> NOW I hear its not really as hyped up as it is. Its being stripped off many, many features before launch and its just gonna be another i730 with WM6..period..........that said I am NOT waiting for the stripped i760 anymore..(wish I had kept the beta i760, oh well)....going over to get the iPhone..........yeah I know the service sucks and so does the fact that NO insurance on devices.............hey I have to take that chance.
Equus,
Can you give us any hints as to what features they have stripped off? Please tell me they have left wifi and bluetooth on the phone!
lol, he said he was going to go get an iPhone...He was kidding!
But seriously, do a dump so we can have the better firmware!
In light of the iPhone comment, I too think equus was pulling our leg about switching. What say ye, equus?

So can we hope he was just pulling our leg in the entire post? I'm really pulling for having an option between the 6800 and the i760, and I just love the look of the 760.

Jay I know as much as you want your birthday present so bad, I wish I could send you an i760 . I am switching carriers. To be honest and all jokes aside I honestly have had it with VZW. All the stuff in signing NDA's, taking my personal time to help them find problems in phones, chat back and forth with VZW developers and then get let down by the very same people that you "think" you trusted.....I can't lie to myself or to others. I feel like I was "used". Life goes on Jay, I have been loyal to VZW since the time it was called Airtouch way back when the service was lousy and when they barely had any decent cell phones. So when I look back and ask myself how much time I "donated" to the cause of making a "company" get rich with NO return for me, I think I was a fool. Wouldn't you think so? NOW I am really starting to believe that VZW doesn't give a darn about anybody's advice or feed-back or customer loyalty. As long as their "bottom-line" is fine they are happy. Crippling stuff on sets just so they can squeeze more blood out of the "peasants" in their kingdom is all they do.
That said, BT and Wi-Fi is NOT crippled on the i760. It will be delayed for at least two weeks from the launch of iPhone.
I am venturing into the GSM land as I can play with ANY unlocked phone to my hearts content and stay up many nights "tweaking" stuff just so I can break the phone and then put it back together !!!!! I have scaled down my plan with VZW to just a simple $39.99 a month plan NO data or internet services NO V-Cast NO TV No music download NO NOTHING. My contracts up and signing off.
I will still be here fussing around with PDA's and still help out members when needed. I have way too many "true friends" here and I CANNOT let them down.

Equus, I still don't know what they Dumbed up on the phone, but it must be really bad.
If your statement is true about the phone being an I730 on wm6, then you probably know my take on it.

Whoa..! I don't think I've ever heard (read) Equus make statements like that! In the years I've been reading his posts he's not prone to such tirades! What the heck happened?!? Can't wait for the NDA to expire so we can get the skinny!...is it too early to start talking about cooking a new ROM for a phone that hasn't even been released yet!

dangerous,
You will need to send that phone back. And the next 8 that they send you before you get the right one...........
Let us know how you make out on that.

VZW, It's 2009! Time to embrace technology, not suppress it. - oops too late I've moved on over to the iPhone w/ AT$T!
Well, with that pretty much helps me make my mind up... Unfortuneatly here in the midwest, I have no GSM coverage, so its either Sprint or VZW.
I knew when it was rumored that VZW was "WEDGING" Vcast services onto these phones it would be the beginning of the end for us. Hopefully we get some enterprising hackers to help us out, but its not looking good.
I've been waiting to replace my I730 just like everyone else and all of these delays are torking me off. Yesterday, I picked up an 820, and in short order got it hooked up to exchange and got the basics configured. The I picked up the Motorola S9 Bluetooth headset. (single piece, around the neck, stereo). This works pretty well and I was playing music (from the 2GB Mini SD), immediately after pairing.
While I will miss the larger screen and some other features (occasional wifi), the weight and form factor are greatly appreciated. I'll have the 730 as a backup.
It seems we need federal action to force phone competition (Verizon opening up the network) like the GSM carriers do with their SIM cards. Verizon, while certainly having the best network in DC Metro area, and others, I feel trapped by their overbearing control and lack of good faith with their customers.
If I could switch reliably, I would. Here's hoping that Sprint Wi-Max is implemented well, far and wide. I think they have a chance to turn a Verizon EVDO trick with Wi-Max and become a leader.
Who knows maybe they will listen to all this and become the People's Cell Phone Company.
I am getting impatient as well but I am not going to believe a bunch of reps on the delay the same way we don’t believe them on the release dates. I am still sticking with 7/4/07 just because the i730 was 7/4/05. I am not sure about the HTCs. They look good but do they hold up? Seems the co-workers that have them have switch phones in the 2 years I have had the i730. Samsung and Verizon if you are reading this board get you act together and get the phone out soon or when the i760 does release it will be DOA. If it is delayed and you are going to cram it with tons of new features because you are reacting to the iPhone than say something. Silence is deadly to power users like us.

I'm in the same boat. I don't have the "choice" of GSM service in the midwest unless I am going to move to another area I am stuck with Verizon or Sprint, well alltel, but do they even offer pdaphones?

Alltell usually has hand-me-downs of whatever VZW and Sprint has had for the last few months, so yeah, you can get a Q, or a Treo... Maybe that will change in the future, but for now not much.
I am torn between the i760, and xv6800, and will keep my Q for backup. Hopefully both of those are hackable enough that we can clean up the rom, and live without VCAST or GIN. I have no desire to pay them for ringtones, video, or Windows Mobile apps I could buy on my own, or freeware.
Its bad enough I will be paying full retail, but then to nickel and dime me even further after paying $90 a month?

Will do, #1 is in the works. They can't give you a demo that they manually QC'd then give you a messed up unit when you pay. Kinda Like Equus, Give Him a Beta then break the replacement that they give.

Wow, equus! I am speechless (which doesn't come naturally to a lawyer ). I had no idea VZW was that bad. It's really ashame. I've been with them since the Airtouch days too (although I might have a brief stint with Alltel in the middle, though I could have been an Alltel customer first--just don't remember). With my parents on T-Mobile, maybe I should give T-Mobile a chance when my contract expires. Unfortunately, just renewed my wife's line (on a shared plan) last year so she might have another year to go. I know my contract will be up in October of this year or so.
What I'm still curious about, though, is whether you were serious about the iPhone. I have not heard positive things about AT&T/Cingular's converage in Phoenix so, even though I love Apple and Apple products, I won't switch to AT&T/Cingular just to get the iPhone. However, I'm still interested in knowing whether the iPhone lives up to its hype.
Sorry for all your troubles with VZW.

Well, I am sure Apple WILL go a mile farther than a "carrier" to make sure this product works well. Also, I am looking at the future of cell-phone-technology that is tending to be driven by GSM standards versus CDMA standards. There seems to be so much of "co-operation" between hardware and software suppliers that the carriers have some or very little say in disabling features that the phone manufacturer has spent time and money in developing that product. Just imagine IF a device manufacturer DID make a CDMA device with the all new electro-touch screen with some really good UI that a user could change to suit their needs, WOULD VZW ever let us change that UI? I don't think so. Would VZW let me catch a Wi-Fi to surf the net? I don't think so. Would VZW let me tweak some of the "intended" BT stacks to port in music? I don't think so. So at the end of the day why should I pay for a "converged device" that is NOT converged for my benefit? I am going with the Apple product because (I can't believe I am saying this) AT LEAST they change or fix things based on consumer feed-back. Remember they already changed the battery configuration to keep up with the usage, they changed the UI to accomodate random touch glitches, so IF they could do this this fast before the launch date and have a product that they ARE about to build their reputation on, I guess I have to try them out. Besides that I have a gut feeling that there is some kind of an agreement with at&t to ensure "decent" coverage. I don't believe that Steve Jobs would make a business decision IF he were to marry up with a carrier that would bring his Board of Directors to his door step demanding .........you know what......
Bottom line I am just tired of VZW crippling devices that we do pay a good amount of money to get them. The point of them subsiding the cost is NOT the factor here, I agree has the service been lousy with VZW NO.NO.NO. They do have excellent coverage, I have to give them credit, BUT here's the kicker, I noticed that the battery lasts longer in GSM phones..........SURPRISE, SURPRISE........my GSM T-Mobile Wing battery lasts me for 5 hours true talk time.....I can never get that with the i730 even with the extended battery, go figure........my wife's PDA with T-Mobile lasts her 15 days and about 6 hours talk time and to just get me she taunts me all the time by telling me "don't forget taking your extra battery or the charger with you, you don't want to be caught without "stay power"......damn that pisses me off when she says that
