All, I sent a request to my VZW business rep to get an update on the next WM devices to be released. Here was the response:
The next three devices -
6800 - which will be sometime third quarter. Don't have a specific date.
I760 - Failed user testing and we sent back for revisions.
Treo 755p - which you know is going to be a Palm version - No timeframe announced.
Of the three, the 6800 will be out first.
I'll see if we can get a more specific release date.
Been a while since I have posted around here, but I just had our person who handles our phones inquire with our business rep, and the reply we got back was:
"Unfortunately that device did not pass initial testing so the release date has been pushed back. No ETA at this time. "
Which really sucks as the rep just emailed us stating my line was available for a phone upgrade.
Mrailing, has "Ethan" said anything about this failed testing?
"Unfortunately that device did not pass initial testing so the release date has been pushed back. No ETA at this time. "
We saw pictures of this thing running WM6 back in February, I think, and now we're hearing that it failed INITIAL testing. Equus didn't mention a thing about this, but my bigger concern is this: It didn't pass initial testing, which must have started a few months ago. We all know VZW "testing" takes a long time, but this seems a little ridiculous.

I agree, it sucks being kept in the dark by VZW, but at the same time I do understand it. Hopefully the 7-4-07 date that was posted not too long ago is still valid. Only 2 weeks away from that one. We shall see.
You said: I'm very disappointed by the continued use of "profit" as a bad word in our society (and to a certain extent in this thread). Profit is what makes society function, not "good will".
With all due respect, lynn, precious few socialists live among us. Right out of the box, PPCs are largely tools of capitalist warfare.
Let us assure you that folks don't begrudge wireless carriers or device suppliers a healthy profit. The stridency you observe here (and presumably, elsewhere) is contempt for 1) indefensible business decisions, such as those that have humbled Sprint Nextel and Motorola, and 2) disingenuous, imitative sincerity and arrogant, predatory practices that tyrannize customers. Let's highlight just two:
1) ETFs: A carrier has the absolute right to recover its so-called "handset subsidy"--to the extent a subscriber fails to meet its corresponding service-agreement term obligation. But if said subscriber pays full price, or activates a used handset, the customer is still generally subject to the ETF. Q. Why? A. Greed, abuse, racketeering, fraud, misrep...expletives deleted.
2) Data Plan Offers: Nobody requires that VZW offer "Unlimited" data. This is a voluntary creature (and one not very competitive with Sprint at that). Still, promotional language must serve the expectation of reliance. If a data package is represented as "Unlimited," it must be "Unlimited." A 4- or 5-GB "incredible shrinking Hershey bar" (whose uses are then, via endless disclaimers, arbitrarily constrained) just doesn't cut it with Webster's or the FTC. Q. Ditto. A. Ditto.
VZW apparently thinks (from what little we know) that waiting a bit longer to release this phone will be more profitable for them. We can argue the validity of that logic, but we can't blame them for their intent.
There can be no profit-maximizing motive for the i760's ever-slipping release date. While there can be any number of other explanations, none is economic and none is pleasant. The device is just l-a-t-e.
Thus, we ask that you weigh context and allow for legitimacy in "profit" challenges.
onusigep,
You said: The testing they are doing is most likely testing the stuff they broke while crippling the device.
Good call. And even if it doesn't apply here, it has before and will again.

So, since the Mogul has come out with Wm6 I guess the heat is off VZW to release anything with WM6 since they can't be first.
To echo what Bam just said,
I would like to make it clear that I have no problem with VZW trying to make money. I fancy myself one day making as much as they do. However many people in this forum, myself included paid retail for the phones we use. To then be forced to have to pay for "services" which VZW provides instead of being able to natively perform them on our devices, (ie. transfer a ringtone we made to the phone via bluetooth rather than pay $2 for it through their get it now service) is what gets me upset personally. I'm glad they want to make money, thats how we get these new phones, wireless internet through our phones, and even the bluetooth that we'd like to use freely. I just wish they didn't try to be abusive in their quest to make money. Which is the same problem the DOJ had with Microsoft.
You said: I760 - Failed user testing and we sent back for revisions.
Oops. Entirely believable. This rep likely tells the truth--and the rejection could be for almost any reason. A discouraging sign. And if it's hardware, it could be ominous. Look, it could mean reworking a whole production run (with every unit now a "refurb"), or it could mean a new run and a major delay. At worst, an additional FCC filing would now be required.
If it's hardware, August is probably history.
The second-order consequence of a delay is that xv6800 substitution will occur. Thus, the 6800 user base will be substantial by the time the i760 appears. This suggests implications for community support. Many just won't wait.
As Brian_W urges, MR needs to check in with "Ethan" on this one...
greenbep,
Thanks for digging up Emperor Seidenberg's brilliant manifesto.
He went on to note that Verizon has come out with four devices in the last month alone and they've talked about another 20 coming soon.
"Talked about?!" What does "talked about" even mean?! Is this like our speculating over an "i790?"
Oh, coming soon! Of course!
i760
755p
xv5800
xv6800
Moto M (Q9M) (supposedly the iPhone killer)
800w
BB Curve
BB Pearl RAZRs in 12 new colors!
It seems to me that any major hardware problems would have been detected earlier in testing. I haven't even seen a hint that there might be issues with the phone, which leads me to believe it's a fit and polish issue that Verizon's still not happy with.
Long-time reader, first/second time poster.
Email from our corporate business rep today:
"I received the following news from our handsets division:
Samsung is working on some software fixes for the device. If the phone passes testing with these new software updates, we are looking at August/September timeframe."
Posted a few times. But I've been following this thread since day and have been waiting patiently but I don't think I can do it anymore. I've only have my i730 since January (had a LG6100 and BB 8700g). And for the span of a week i was a 6700 user. But back on point I've been waiting a long time on this phone and if it gets pushed back further than July I think its something else for me. Might have to go local and get a BB Curve on Cincinnati Bell. I find Verizon rediculous when it comes to getting phones out in a timely manner. But I might be able to hold out if i can get my hands on a RAZR VE or a990.
Main reason I was writing. I talked with my cousin who works in corporate in VZW and her information is coinciding with others as to it being pushed but she did not give me a reason. So either they are saying this to throw people off or its true, but i'm really hoping for the former.
mrailing has been uncharacteristicly awol for the last couple days. I think he is out testing his new i760....

Haven't talked to Ethan since that last time I updated, so I don't know.
Thanks for noticing that I haven't been around. Been working 19 hour days since Friday, and today is the first time I have been home since. I had to work for a conference, and I just didn't have any time to come here and read.
Also when SD and I got the WM5 image, we did everything in less than 24 hours, so it wasn't days. When we got the image to me posting the instructions it was less than 24 hours total, and during that time we had MANY users complaining that we were holding back the image...
I wish it was a vacation, but I have been working so my, I haven't even had much time to sleep, which is where I am heading now. I have two days of full appointments, and I hope to catch up on the forums this weekend some time.
I have a call in to Ethan, so hopefully I will hear something soon...

Need help setting up your i730/i830 or other WM2003/WM5 Phone, as well as the other hacks I have done, check out the MRailing Guides and Links
Not that anyone cares, but I got the same info from my regional data manager today, so I guess it looks like xv6800 wins out for me!
Is it possible that the i760 and the Moto q9m are their first Windows Mobile posterchilds for getting GIN/VCAST working so everyone has to live with their ringtones/video/content/GPS? Maybe, but it will be hacked.
Apparently WinMo 6 can lock down certain features for providers... .so yippee for us.... Also yippee for the hackers that have already hacked most of this on foreign carriers!!!!
Not to say I won't move to a i760 later, but I have been waiting too long for a kick-butt PPC unit on VZW. Basically its been xv6600, i730, xv6700, Moto Q, Palm 700w, Moto Q Black not to mention all the other WinMo, Palm, and Blackberry devices I have played with in the past couple years...
WE HAVE NO AT&T HERE! iPhone would roam in the city, and not work for a 400 mile radius, wouldn't work with my email, couldn't hold all my music, can't play my video, and I still wish I had one. iPhone = Cabbage Patch doll

I love that quote... But since it looks like the i760 is truly postponed this begs the real question on this issue.. Will iprob8 have to postpone his birthday before he can iterate another year toward the reaper.... If this goes on this thread will attain the critical mass of the kyo7135 speculation thread and iprob8 will have to celebrate 2 birthdays at the same time...
Ya know sure its late... what worries me more than the delay is what the hell are they doing to it? what kind of shovelware did they suddenly decide to add? Maybe they're integrating Ozan's iPhone skin to fake people into thinking its ..its...ITS...a ..well you know.

WAIT. Maybe this is a plot by iprob8 and VZW. Here's what we know (sort of):
* iprob8 will not have a birthday till they release the i760
* the device was originally to be released around iprob8 original DOB
* now, as we approach the new release date, it mysteriously has a hardware problem that requires it to be delayed; again
* if this continues iprob8 will NEVER HAVE ANOTHER Birthday
* he never gets any older, and LIVES FOREVER …
It seems to me that any major hardware problems would have been detected earlier in testing. I haven't even seen a hint that there might be issues with the phone, which leads me to believe it's a fit and polish issue that Verizon's still not happy with.
It's Verizon, though, so anything is possible.
I remember someone saying that there is an issue syncing with Vista.
Could the problem be a SW issue?
VZW is not in any posiiton to handle support calls on these types of issues.

Kinda like you're holding back with the WM6 image for the 730...
Just kidding - it had to be said!
