Geez, WDW posted a nice WM6 device roundup from PocketPCMag.com. What's depressing about it is that, of the 29 or 30 PPC and Smartphone models covered, only ONE--the i760--is a horse for CDMA/EvDO.
This reflects a CDMA "share" of <3.5% of the current warrior handset derby. Vanishingly small, eh?
OK, lacking WM6 for the moment, the x6800 wasn't included in the report. With this unit upgraded as a WM6 player, CDMA can claim a population of TWO out of 30-31 radios (<7%).
All of which kinda suggests that Sprint and VZW have some heavy lifting ahead. If they continue to lag in rollng out advanced devices, these carriers may be in for some unpleasant churn.
We'll soon see how well the i760 and x6800 can hold their own against some aggressive GSM/HSDPA competition. Two years ago, the ix30 and x6700 had no challengers at all.

Apparently T-mobile is releasing the Wing, a WM6 device tomorrow.
Anyone know how its specs compare to the i760? It seems like a pretty nice handset. It does have a better camera in it, but that doesn't affect me. I assume there are better unlocked devices out there.
I'm not bound to a specific provider, so I want to make sure that I get the most for my money. I've been so focused on the i760 that I've lost sight of the competition.
Careful my friend...I think you will find the 760 the best CDMA PPC phone choice out there, though I will give you that there are only three or so. I know you said that you are not locked to a carrier, but I have found that though they currently seem to be stealing the device market, GSM Carriers truly have yet to catch up to the CDMA coverage and signal strength. Many have strayed, and most return. But it all depends on what you are needing and wanting. The last time through this process the best phone was on the best servicde provider...now, we choose between the two...though I think the 760 will truly hold its own in all of this.

I've been with Sprint for 10 years... since they barely coverd detroit/toledo and when dual band was a luxury item.... so I've had my blinders on for a long time.
I just want to make sure that when I make the jump to a new contract/carrier that I have all the info. Often times when we wait patiently for a device, other better devices sneak into the market place. I just want to make sure I, and others, take in all the options.
From what I've read on the Wing, it's pretty under powered (200mhz), but still a good design. Not enough to make me stray from the 760.
I am new to this Forum and I am looking to get my first PDA phone. I have been following this thread for a while now and honestly I am torn between the SCH-i760 and also the possible release of the Pearl or Curve for Verizon. Could anyone give me some insights into why windows mobile 6 would be better over the more stable Blackberry OS and why this phone would be better?

If you looking for pure stability, the Blackberry's are solid.
However, customization for Blackberries is severly less than what you can do on Windows Mobile phone, regardless of the OS.
I have both, BB for work, and i730 WM5 for personal. The BB is great for my work emails and ok for browsing, but I cannot watch Sling on it nor can I save any files (mp3s, movies, etc).
You can consider a WM phone a stripped down laptop and a BB as a glorified MS Outlook.

It all depends on your requirements.
My 8830 is supposedly arriving tomorrow. In general, I agree, but I have read reviews that say java support has not been crippled by VZW on the 8830. This may help on its flexibility. Also, again supposedly, it does have some multimedia support. In any event, after I try it out, I will post a comment.

Remember, it is quality, not quantity. I am sure 66% of the stuff on this page is garbage and will be short lived. When Verizon release a phone, it is around for a while.

Just wanted to see what you guys think about this story on the iPhone's exclusivity. I could really care less about the iPhone itself, but what's interesting in the story is Verizon's CEO making mention of a device that's a "very good response...in the late summer". Could he be talking about the i760, or am I just wishing that VZW's finally admitting to this awesome phone?

Well,
What VZW is planning on doing is releasing the I760 with MRailing's Iphoneish application.

Matt,
You really need to pick a phone based on what you want it to do. I currently have the i730, and it has been great, it replaced my previous moto phone, and hp PPC. I chose the i730 because it looked cool , and had the OS that I wanted with BT and WiFi. The OS you choose may be important, it may not, depending on what you want to do. Do you want/need a touch screen or not? etc.
I use the i730 for PIM, email, web surfing, pocket quicken, pocket bible, word, excel, music, movies and games.
On rare but very necessary occasions, I use the built in terminal services client to remote desktop in and manage my office server, something a BB couldn't do.
Figure out what features you want etc., Pick a Cellular Carrier(lots of threads on this), and pick a phone from the carrier.
I'm sure there are better threads than this one to discuss this in.

It's hard to imagine the i760 as a response to the iphone. Let's hope he's not referring to the i760. End of summer is too late. I'm hoping it's released next month.

I thought the same thing when I read the article.
If it isn't the 760 though what could it be? Granted a chocolate 2 would compete with the music end of the phone, but the iPhone appears to be much more. If it is a true competitor I'd be interested in seeing some specs before i pick up my 760.
I'm sorry--but is the i760 going to be available for Sprint or not? I read about 34 pages of this thread....no luck...
No information about it being available for Sprint. We have only heard about it being available for Verizon, and being branded Verizon.

I don't think the i760 is meant to be the challenger to the iPhone. The iPhone will be heavily multimedia, where the i760 is more of a PDA device.
I would say that Verizon is working on a next generation Chocolate or something like that with a large internal hard drive, and good multimedia controls.
Verizon has always in the past, sold "converged" devices towards the business community, and they still seem to be doing that, especially with the higher priced data plans for Windows Mobile devices. I would say that something else is in the works, with a data plan that is comparible with AT&T's data plan for the iPhone and what they offer will be along the same lines as the iPhone.
I highly doubt the i760 or 6800 will be the direct competitor to the iPhone, as they will want something with a more closed system, and great features to attempt to directly compete with it...
