Actually no, the i730 had LOTS more hype around it before release, and KBAM hit it on the head with his last post. The i760 has a lot of competition and the i730 was a HUGE step forward for devices (which is why it's still a great device, and even devices released today don't meet all of it's specs). The i730's hype stemmed from 3 devices, the 6600, i700, and the i600. There also was some hype from the Palm devices that were out, so it was meeting the hype of around 3-6 devices of people, all of which were active on the forum. Now the i760 is being released with a handful of smartphone devices, the 6800, and some Treo devices, so hype is spread out.
I see "Ethan" tomorrow. So I will corner him and see if I can get the complete low down on time tables and what the delay is about.
I didn't see the hype myself, but may not have known where to look. What kind of places was the hype expressed in popular consumer info venues?
Unless I totally misunderstand, this is a sweet idea. We could get the slim SGH-i760 body, with a 3mp camera, front conference cam, and with awesome specs, high memory capacity, WM6, java/flash, SDHC hack built in for SD Cards, Rev A, etc..and or let us PICK what we want in our ROMs...perhaps even get several options of bodies for those who want a horizontal keyboard like in the SCH-i760 etc..
dominick - Do you remember that "beating a dead horse" conversation we had a while back?
is there any truth to the rumor that a data plan is required on all new pda/phone purchases AND you can not get a data block?
I really want a this phone, but paying extra for data seems a bit ridiculous as there is no sign of EVDO coming to my area any time soon and I have building wide WIFI at work.
Although VZW's PPC/smartphone users must subscribe to a data package, it can be a pay-as-you-go offering that incurs no charges unless used. Still, the carrier will block data access upon request. Alternatively, there are a couple of device-based methods of disabling access to VZW's data service.
Lack of EvDO coverage isn't necessarily a reason to block packet data access, as 1xRTT can be useful. But for some folks, the high cost of "Unlimited" data service ($40 and up/mo),--whether EvDO or 1x--can be hard to justify.
I guess things may have changed in the past year, but when I got my i730 the first month it was available, I didn't get a data plan for the first year that I had it. My boss got his almost 7 months after I did and he didn't have a data plan either for the first 6 months that he had his. We had to get ours from our local Verizon store and they had to make a couple of calls to figure out how to code it in the system to have no data plan.

Actually you have a data plan, but it's Pay As You Go. Which means if you use data, you just pay per KB of usage, if you use it. This is considered a data plan. You can however call and request a data block put on your account. The best way to do this if they give you any hassle is to say that you have a teenager that will be using the phone periodically, and you want to block all access to the data. You can also do it locally on the device (deleting all the connections), but putting a block on your account prevents it from using it.
But when they say that you HAVE to have a plan, then don't mean you have to have a plan that costs you per month, like the unlimited plan, but it mean you get Pay As You Go, and you just pay for what you use. So if you don't use any of the over the air data (1x/EVDO) then you don't get charged for anything.
This has always been the case with PDA phones since the i730 was released. Because these devices can integrate so much over data, they require some type of data, and don't advertise that they CAN put a block on data. The key thing is telling them to put a block on the data.

If I recall correctly, when I bought my i730 in approximately October 2005, VZW gave me a discount if I signed up for the "unlimited" data package. Thus, when we're discussing whether a data plan is required, the requirement might be in the context of getting a discount on the purchase price of the phone if the consumer signs up for the "unlimited" data package.

If you log into the verizon wireless website under your account and click on the link at the bottom for upgrade features you can disable stuff there. I am not sure if this works on my I730 yet, but it does for my daughters samsung phone. You can block the web, data applications.... Just thought I would share.
As MR said you can either have any of the data options (pay-as-you-go, Unlimited or 10 MB block) or VZW can block your data access. The down side to this is no picture or MMS messaging. My wife has a Q and when we tried to block the data, she couldn't send or receive any MMS. So MR has the right idea, disable the connection settings on the device rather than through verizon.
If you do delete the connections on your phone make sure you also delete CDMACSP from the startup folder as it will restore the data connections each time on startup. VZW little way of making sure you only use their data service.
I just met with my VZW team that services my company. They showed me the new global blackberry 8830 (release May 14th) and gave me an update on other devices. i760 will be in June (didn't know if it was beginning, middle or end), but said it will be released in June. The 6800 and the 5800 will be released in July. Interesting sidenote is that the 6800 will have WM6 on it.
After two years lugging around this freakin brick....What's another month!?
Folks I think I might have some bad news....not sure if this means a delay or not but not sure why they would do this if it didnt. But I was going to the FCC website to check and make sure that the short term confidentiality for the user manual was up tomm as it prev said and it looks like it has been extended and now will not be available until 8/12/2007. Does this mean that the device has been at least delayed until then? If not why would they not release the user manual before hand? Any help is appreciated.

I'm sure our FCC experts will step in w/ a better answer than I but as I understand it they just request to continue confidentiality in blocks of time (3 months I believe). When the device is actually released the confidentiality will of course expire. As I understand it the extension doesn't mean it wont be out till after that date, just that they wanted it extended from the old date (which makes sense since the device isn't out yet).

I believe KBAM explained that this is the case - i.e. confidentiality is granted in 3 month blocks.

Read the FCC sticky, it explains a lot of why this is happening...
