I'm all for it. But sometimes I have to take a step back and chuckle at myself. Because seriously...the alternative to all this effort would be to just..well...be patient? I like a new gadget as much as the next person, but my Treo 700W is still the best converged device I have ever owned. I guess I can stand to just...wait. The extra FCC info won't put an i760 in my hands anytime sooner, and I suspect most of the extra info we already know.
Once again, you 'da man! I can't believe how thorough you are. What a great summary and plan of action. I'm happy to send an e-mail to the FCC once you get the template completed.
Thanks for all your work!

What I say is this is needed. As KBAM has said, and we have all seen. The companies are abusing the FCC ability to hide their documentation, just because they don't want us to see it. If they publicly show a device, like Samsung did as CES and the other trade shows, they have no reason to hide it and shouldn't be allowed to request to hide it. When need to voice to the FCC that this shouldn't be the case. If the companies want information hidden, then don't show us...

Any more discussion on this, keep it in the CURRENT Rumor and Release thread, EXCEPT if you have information that will help us directly, then post it there. Keep comments and discussion "about" it here, while information directly related to the the FCC letter in that thread.
So if you have a comment like "great job guys", post it here. If you have comments like "This website (HTML ADDRESS) has pictures and an article written about a press release given from Samsung on the i760", then put it over there.
We want only the factual information and anything else will be removed and deleted...

That said..bring it on. I'll send that email .
I have the same thoughts. I personally think that we should be using our collective efforts in stopping cell service providers from limiting functionality of our devices and misleading marketing scams such as "unlimited Data".
But if you all can get the user manual sooner......cool.

Here's one more in agreement. Seriously, is getting the manual a few days earlier really all that important? I thought I had no life reading these forums (and others) constantly, but this has reached a new low.
I think I can honestly sit back and chuckle and feel superior.
Mark has the right idea. We should be getting a lawsuit together suing the carriers for more serious infractions.
In my mind the sooner we get the manual the sooner the folks on this forum can start thinking of ways around the barriers that Verizon will put on the phone. I am all for getting a head start.
Way to go KBAM count me in.
We all know that the idea of getting Verizon to change their ways is not easy but if they see that the forums have the power to get the manual then they might pay more attention to us as a group. Plus the buzz on the net if we can do it will also make them pay attention.
I think this FCC is the first step in empowering us to start doing more about the split of mobile devices from carriers. This is a small step, and if it works, then it's one more thing to take to the battle ground of getting us better devices.
Don't think of this as just a way to get the manual. This of this as a way to keep companies from abusing privileges that the government puts out there, and a way for us to fight back a little. Read the first part of the FCC thread for a more detailed reason.
KBAM and I talked this morning after 1AM before 6 AM for over an hour about this on the phone. I think this is a great stepping stone and we can see how well the community contributes and participates, and see what we can get done.
I will do my best to keep everything organized in the thread, and with everyone's help, we can start making the companies responsible for actions they take, at least on some small level.

Another great reason for getting the manual into the open is it will also put pressure on Verizon to NOT attempt to put limits on the device that the manufacturer has designed i.e. with the i730 and simulataneous wi-fi and phone radio implementation, bluetooth profiles etc. I believe the more public information that is available on the product, the less ability Verizon will have to cripple the device before it is released, and as mRailing said, ultimately that can help break the monopoly that Verizon has over the devices we can use on the network.

Perhaps, but this wont help the i760 as that type of stuff is long since done. The only thing not done for the i760 is marketing the device.

One of the things this effort will do is ensure the service providers squeeze and restrict the manufactures from demonstrating or show casing their devices as freely as they have been.

But folks, we are a very small minority in Verizon Wireless land. Albeit, we probably have the largest monthly bills with all the extras we have, but nontheless, we are a small minority. I fell like Han Solo and company at the end of The Return of the Jedi. Do you think we can really blow up the shield? Honestly?

I have thought of that, but then again, these companies WANT to show off their devices. They want those awards to be given to them so they can have award winning products. They will still show them, but they won't be able to abuse the FCC system.
But hey if it makes them keep it under wraps, then we won't know about it, which what we don't know, don't hurt us... right?
I think the only thing this will do is make the companies think twice before requesting an agreement, and if they do request it, and it gets busted, they are only out less than $200 for the request. I feel the FCC needs to hold them accountable for "marketing" a device, and still requesting that it be private.

I was doing some reading today and came across some interesting information on WM6. WM6 now includes the ability for OEM's to include Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 as an optional license for WM6 devices, both Standard and Professional. This means they don't have to go to third party companies like VoiceSignal to get their voice software, and instead can buy a license to include it in the WM6 build.
Now whether Samsung has chosen to do this with their WM6 device, only time will tell (or the potential Manual when released), but it is an option....
Just something else to consider.

Although I generally don't like it when Microsoft ties a program (e.g., Internet Explorer) to the OS, I would hope that the integration would result in a more stable product overall than, say, adding a third party program. That's just my hope, though. I have no idea whether, in reality, it turns out to be the case.

Take this for what it's worth, but this is a response from VZW to an inquiry about the status of the out of stock i730, from a member at HoFo:
Quote:
"Verizon Wireless is committed to providing the very latest in products and services. At this time, we are unable to state when the i730 will be back in stock but other Samsung PDA's will be offered to Verizon Wireless customers. We understand and apologize for any frustration regarding this but we are only able to provide information regarding products or services that we are currently offering. We are unable to disclose any unconfirmed information because it would be subject to change and could raise expectations that may not be met."
That's the closest they've come to admitting that there's anything in the pipeline that I've heard. Sounds like their standard form letter with that little tidbit about "other" PDA's thrown in.
