Dom, maybe I am being a little over-simplistic here, and even moreso, I am showing my age... but, trying to use a GSM phone on a CDMA network would be like trying to get FM radio stations with only an AM radio. If you have a radio with both AM and FM, then it can get FM stations - but only when it is switched to the FM band. The i830 phone has absolutely no reception in the US when using the GSM side - it only works here because it also has a CDMA radio. To the point of this thread, the i760 does not have a CDMA radio, so, as a phone, it is as useless as trying to get FM on an AM radio.
I'll show my age......
Do you remember AM/FM converters? lol

Doesn't EVDO Rev A Change this though, so that one can use data and phone together?
Yes, Rev A, like it's GSM counterpart HSDPA, is supposed to allow concurrent voice and data transmission. The i760 specs didn't list Rev A. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, & eagerly awaiting the "Rev A upgrade thread" in the new i760 forum.
I haven't gotten a chance to look through any of the documents yet, but this is just one more step to release, whenever that might be. And maybe Engadget will have it up in a few minutes with more analysis.

Well, well. A light is appearing at the end of the tunnel. Good eye drnezzy.

If you take a look at the "SAR test report" or the "Supplemental SAR Report" for the i760, it states that the phone has an EVDO Rev. 0 radio. Oh well... I'm still excited. After all, any phone that comes out now is going to be obsolete in a year, but the form factor of the i760 is killer.
Here's an interesting side note about the HTC 6800. According to the its FCC filing here, the 6800 will not be able to support both Bluetooth and wifi on at the same time. It appears twice in the text, both in the "SAR Report rev" p.6 note. 10, and in the Cover Letter "Response revised" p. 2 note. 9. This is supported by the fact that no tests were conducted with both the BT and wifi radios on simultaneously.
If that is indeed true, the i760 might have the competitive edge

Unless Verizon cripples it to do this like it did with i730 2003SE version. The WM5 released it...maybe it slipped by Verizon's Q&A on that one.

Yeah, Rev 0 is a bummer--I was hoping they would add Rev A since the 6800 is coming out with it. No pics come up on the test report---anyone else see them on their PC?

No but in the test document there is several pages that have titles like "Internal photographs" and "External Photographs" but they are blank pages (besides the header/footer). Another document has a machine made drawing of the back of the phone indicating the position of the FCC label.

A bummer? Yes. Let's not be surprised, though. The internal VZW marketing sheets that were leaked months ago showed Rev A for the 6800 and didn't mention Rev A for the i760, which in my mind meant that the i760 would not have Rev A. The FCC information is in line with my expectations.
Granted, I am a little disappointed with the i760 not having Rev.A, but keep in mind that all Rev.A improves is upload speed and latency. It's not like the revolutionary change 1x data to EVDO was. I still can't wait for this phone to come out regardless of what the competition has in store.
Besides, there's tons of area's that done even have EVDO yet. When the i730 came out the EVDO market was really really tiny. Now its finally getting better. If we had a Rev A radio it'd be the same thing. Only a small group would get to use it beacause the roll out for Rev A is just starting.

Interesting stuff, very interesting. I work 18 hours today, and have no time to check in, and look what I miss...
REV A wasn't suppose to be on the i760, so no surprise there. No other real surprises I have seen.
Also with the only advantage to REV A being (currently) faster upload speeds, and "potentially" phone and data at the same time (if Verizon wants that to happen), then it doesn't matter yet, and in the next two years when Rev A is out there more, then I will worry about a different device. In the past two years, I have had two times that I can remember that I wish I had had data and voice at the same time. The rest of the time, it didn't matter.
All in all, the FCC docs look like everything we have known. No we just wait for the device and speculate some more...

I'm in the process of Demo'ing the REVA PMCCIA cards for the sole reason that tethering on the current line up of phones does NOT allow simultaneous data/phone. MR, i'm surprised that you, being a computer geek that you are (like most of us) don't need for your work the ability to talk and surf at the same time (of course while on the road with your laptop).

I have access to an aircard when I need it (well on occasion). Plus I have a family share with a Moto RAZR that I carry in my laptop bag for a two reasons.
1. If I got "out" and don't feel like carrying my i730, I just forward the calls to the RAZR and take it. Plus the camera on the RAZR and small size have come in nice for some interesting "fun" photos at the bars.
2. For $10/month for a family share, it's cheaper to get a second phone line, than paying for an aircard, and I can use the RAZR to talk and the data on the i730. Again I just forward my calls from my i730 to the RAZR, and then hook up for the extended data session, when a call comes in, I can still answer and talk, using my family share minutes, and continue to use data.
So you might think about that. It fits in my laptop bag without adding much weight and bulk, and I already carry a wall socket mini-USB charger for my iPod which also will charge the RAZR (it's the new very small iPod charger.
So instead of paying $60+ per month for an aircard, and still having to carry it around with me, the RAZR is about the same size as the aircard, maybe even a bit smaller, and it's only $10/month...
So in all those times I have needed to use data/voice, I normally do the above. But the rest of the times I am usually in a location with WiFi and just use that with my laptop while I use my i730 to talk. I am not a heavy user of data on the i730, and only recently when I setup my Exchange server did I enable push full time, before I just POP'd my mail when I had time to read it.

We have a Business plan at work, we do pool minutes, but the cheapest phone service they offer on our plan is about $32.89 with discounts. So, unfortuneately we can't take advantage of the $10 Family Share.
By the way, I can't find my I730. I'm Demo'Ing a PN820 since last week and i don't know where i left it. the 820 is not a bad phone. it actually works as a phone. (i think its smaller than your razr.)

I got the RAZR for around $20 when I signed up for it, and two years of $10/month and taxes let me spend less than $275 for two years of use of a second line, which I thought was a pretty good deal. I haven't used the RAZR much, so I doubt I will keep the family share going when my contract is up, but it has come in handy in the past, or giving it to my step-father, who refuses to have a cell phone, and when he really needs one and for us to find him at a race track or public place.
And still, even $33/month is cheaper than $60/month, so you could just about get two additional lines for the cost of 1 aircard. I really don't want to give Verizon any more out of my pocket than I have to, and saving $50/month by having a second line instead of an aircard is nice.
Also with a EVDO REV A card, I have been told that you must be connected to a REV A tower to use the dual radio side of the phone (data and phone at same time). Connected to a REV 0 tower, and you get voice or data, but not both at once (this is what I have read and been explained, but it could be different). So until they got this in my area, it wouldn't help me. It took them longer than 2 years to even get EVDO here, so I am not worried about REV A just yet. The phone that will replace my i760 will be REV A capable, and that will be good.
This is the first time I have had a phone longer than 1 year in a while. I had the i600 for a bit longer than a year, but I did this in the hopes of a replacement for it, which never came (one with bluetooth, EVDO, and a camera). I typically in the past got a new phone every 6-12 months, mostly buying from Ebay or paying full price at Verizon. And every other phone I got for a reduced price.
With the higher turnover in PDA Phones now, I expect the length of keeping a phone to reduce from the 2 years with the i730, to 12 months again, depending on what they bring out, and the new tech that we see...
