You were referring to the Ultra Smart F520, while I was thinking about the Ultra Smart F700. You are entirely correct about the F520 being a dual slider:
It looks pretty swell... too bad that it's GSM!
I didn't realize they were talking about two different phones either until you guys questioned it. I had to go back and read the article carefully again. Definately a cool concept.
BTW, back on topic, the i760 news has slowed down a bit for a phone that might be out in 1-3 months. I think there was alot more internet buzz when the i730 was about to launch.

Verizon has done a better job of keeping it a secret. Simple as that. Most of the information about the i730 was early on, and then it was about a month before it was released. The anticipation for the i730 was also much greater as many more people were interested in it than the i760, as the i760 has a lot more competition in the works, where the i730 was about the only device being released in that short amount of time.
I think we will see some more stuff closer to launch...

i would imagine that by mid to late april we should see something because you had said something about may as a release time, right? it will be interesting. those months leading up to the i730 on this forum were fun with all the speculation going on!
I was told May as an "estimated" release date. I was also given the standard "could be earlier, could be later". Due to the fact that we haven't seen it on the FCC site yet. Once we see it, it could show up as early as 30-90 days after that. Verizon doesn't publish release dates because they constantly push them back, and hopefully they won't do it too much with the i760. I am ready for a new toy...

Once again, I blew it. When my wife asked me a couple of nights ago what I wanted for my birthday, I should have responded, "a Samsung i760." Of course, had a responded that way, she probably would have left me stranded at the restaurant.

I think I may hold off on getting the i760. To me, it's just not all that impressive (or attractive) as the i730 was from the i700. I'll wait to make a decision until I see one in my hands...but the only benifits I see from upgrading are a (hopefully) more stable device, camera, and windows mobile 6. None of which concern me all that much. With the rumours of the Google phone, and the attractive data plan pricing of other carriers, I may make a switch. Where's my VGA, full screen, slim device with a large amount of internal storage? Show me that phone, and I'll be impressed.
Make sure you check out the other carriers before switching. Even SuperDave is talking about coming back to Verizon due to Cingular's poor performance, and paying the break contract fee. He hasn't made a decision about a device, but he is thinking about coming back due to the better performance of Verizon compared to the other carriers.
So just keep that in mind...

You may have to wait awhile for the Google Phone. This article below says it may be released in 2008. Also, looks like Google is partnering with HTC and Orange (Europe GSM provider), so it may never be released in the US anyway.
I agree about a VGA phone. That would be great, although the battery life would probably suffer greatly. Never owned a VGA PDA, so I don't have any personal experience with that.
I absolutely love my i730, but at this point the random freezes and size are starting to annoy me. I certainly hope that the i760 comes out in the next few months and is a decently designed and implemented model.
That being said I have been with Verizon for over 6 years and found the phone service to be fantastic. I was with both Nextel and AT&T before then and found the service to be horrible.
Q1) After six years, is Verizon service still the best? I can put up with terrible customer service, but not crackled or dropped calls.
Q2) GSM vs CDMA - CDMA clearly was the superior for call quality in the past, but I have not kept up with the technology. Has GSM made any gains on CDMA? Isn't it true that better signal strength = better data transfer speeds if you don't live in a big city? (like me) And lastly, has anyone done data transfer speed tests on each Cingular/T-Mobile/Verizon's Backbone in each of the coverage areas?
Any info you can provide would be appreciated, as I've recently let my contracts with Verizon lapse (first time ever)

No so sure about that. THis is purely anecdotal. I'm in NYC. Nearly everywhere I go I get full bars on my phone. Data works find for my needs, but if I go out to a less congested area, with lower buildings, etc., the speed
increases dramatically. Just my experience.
i had tried both tmobile (bb7100) and cingular (siemens sx66) to try to get away from verizon but the coverage on their networks for me was horrible so i stayed with verizon and will be staying with them...

Data speeds are proportional to the number of users connected so less congested area, less users, faster speed.
On a side note: Do you live in NYC or just work there? I live in the Allentown (PA) area and go to Manhattan a few times a year just for fun.

Service quality depends on the area. I have gone to each of the carriers and convinced them to let me try a device for a three day test, and even offered to pay for service for those days. I showed them a copy of my bill and told them I was willing to break service if the call quality of the service was equal to Verizon. I told them I was going to need a smartphone or PDA phone and would need at least 120 minutes in the 3 day test, but didn't need data or txt messaging. I talked with each of the store managers and convinced them to put a charge on my credit card and if I didn't want the service after 3 days (they told me I had around 2 weeks), then I could return it and only pay for the time used, pro-rated. This was in August 2006. So I spent one full day hitting up each carrier, and away I went for three days of typical driving travel.
I live near Louisville, KY (but on the Indiana side), and I travel to:
* Bloomington, IN - Around 90 miles, mostly through back country roads and farm land
* Indianapolis, IN - Around 90 miles, all Interstate driving
* Louisville, KY (and the surrounding area) - Around 30 miles, all Interstate driving
I tested each carrier. T-Mobile sucked, and I decided VERY quickly that it wouldn't work. Cingular was hit and miss. It worked about 90% where Verizon did, but only on the Interstate side, and only about 60% of where Verizon did in the back roads. Sprint was about equal to Verizon in most areas, but around 70% in the back roads.
After three days of travel to all my areas for business, and hauling 4 cell phones with me, I returned them all, and ended up paying around $100 for the test (since Cingular's manager went back on his word that I wouldn't be charged for activation if I returned it). All in all, it was good to see that Verizon's service was still the best in the area. I had everything from zero service, to dropped calls, missed calls, and words dropping from all the carriers. I would forward my Verizon cell to each of the other cells for the test, which is how I would receive a call.
Now I devoted a lot of time to this because Verizon pissed me off last August, but I sucked it up and stayed with them, because no service was better for me. You could try the same in your area, or just talk to everyone you know with other service. Here are some things to keep in mind, and other reasons I stayed with Verizon:
1. Data service at home, and each place I work (and even EVDO in 90% of those places, including my home town).
2. My family and around 90% of my friends have Verizon, so Mobile-to-Mobile minutes.
3. 80% of my customers mobile phones are Verizon, so again M2M.
4. Verizon, although lacking in normal phone handsets, does have some of the best PDA Phones...
5. Service quality has NEVER been an issue. Sure I have a few areas with no service, but within a matter of minutes of driving, I have service again, and I seldom drop calls, unless I hit those no service minutes
6. Verizon Merits program, new phone each year (search for it here, plenty of discussion on it).
7. I have been with Verizon since before they were Verizon, so around 10 years or more.
8. I know the service, and where the boundaries are of the service, including the EVDO service.
9. I know how to work CS to get what I want and what I need.
10. EVDO... None of the other carriers have a "broadband" service as big as Verizon in all the areas I go.
So you have to ask yourself, is switching really worth it, and even though CS and the cost of Verizon's service suck, is it really better to switch? Is going from bad to worse?
Almost everyone I have known that has switched carriers has told me that Verizon was better, and they were sorry they switched. Each of my customers (some of them with over 50 lines) that were using other carriers and went to Verizon (at my suggestion, can you say M2M?), have told me they couldn't be happier.
Sure I have had my problems with Verizon, but until there is a better service, I won't think about switching again...
Plus I have zero contacts at any of the other carriers, and although I get hardly any information from them (at least that I can post or talk about), it's still fun to call and harass them...

Thanks for all of the info. It is as I had thought, Verizon is still the best service even with the Customer Service issues they face.
Side note: VZW informed me that I can't join the Merits program as I have a corporate account and those corporate accounts are not eligable for Merits rewards. Needless to say, if someone knows something contradictory to this statement, I would love to hear it.
Mike are you planning on evaluating the i760?

I think I posted some links earlier in this thread the jdpower polls of service quality. Verizon was near or at the top in every region. Cingular trailed the pack in almost every region.
Here in the New Orleans, a friend switched to Verizon from Cingular because of terrible call quality and is happier. My sister in law called from Houston asking for directions to our apartment their. She was on I-10 in the eastern suburbs and there was a lot of static. She called from a residential area near the medical center and it was even worse.

I have a Corp account and I get 20% of Cell Plans, Data Feature and Accessories on all my lines. In the long run the Corp account may work out to be better then the Merits program.
