...What's also notable is that, having shown the i760 at CES, Samsung stands in violation of the "marketing" provisions of FCC confidentiality. If now in effect, some protections of confidentiality for this device should be revoked. (Complaint anyone?)...
If that's a violation, then how did Apple get a confidentiality agreement from the FCC until May? They're already marketing the hell out of their iPhone.
I don't think it will have any. What are you looking to do with it?
My vehicle has a built in dvd player, with screen on the dash. There is a module available that will allow you to input an alternate video source. I would love to be able to sling onto the in-dash screen of the vehicle.
...not that I would do that while driving, and not that I would sling-stream using vzw or anything like that...
As far as I recall, I remember only one device with a port to output video, and that was the old Toshiba e740 (non-phone) that I had. It had an adapter for the bottom that gave you a VGA connection, and it was great to be able to connect it to a projector and run a presentation right from the device.
I highly doubt we will see any output like that, as I don't think the current pinout on the Samsung connector processes video, and it looks like the i760 will have the same connector (although I have no proof, and haven't seen the connector without a cover on it).
I think it will be a slim to none chance of outputting video directly from the i730 to any video input.
But I agree, it would be nice. My favorite thing to do is tune in to my favorite channel and switch Slingbox Mobile to audio only and listen to some of my favorite games/shows while driving. Many of the areas I go through are spotty, except for a week signal, and the Sling looses the picture, but keeps up with audio, so an audio only selection gives me unbroken entertainment. I pretty much do that if I can't get the game on XM (and in the future, hopefully all the sports will be on XSirriusM...

Yeah, I had read the previous threads from a while back about video output, but I was just hoping there might be a usb out on this new phone. Ultimately, I'm just trying to find some way to sling onto the larger screen on my dashboard.
Regarding the XM Sirrius pending merger, I'm looking forward to that too... that is, if the FCC will allow it to happen. Best of both worlds if they do, as long as the price doesn't double up.
Probably not enough bandwidth in bluetooth for any decent video??
I think it was that commercial where the guy was catching a flight and only had his PDA phone, no luggage, no laptop bag, nothing but the phone. It was connected to a projector, either via Bluetooth or some other wireless signal and showing the presentation.
I am assuming it was bluetooth and basically transmitted the bits of information needed directly to the projector, which is pretty cool.
I do very few presentations, and when I do, I normally run it off my laptop with a RF wireless remote (through USB). It also lets me split the presentation so I can have my notes available when presenting. But running it off a PDA phone would be nice, but MOST of the places I go have an OLD projector, not one with bluetooth inside, so you would still want to take your laptop, if not just for a backup, or last minute editing and changes. I would hate to show up for a presentation and say, well I didn't plan for that, and it's a shame you don't have the newest projector that can just talk with my phone... Be prepared (a good Eagle Scout like me tries to be...).
The day will come in the future when this is possible just about anywhere, but I think that commercial shows what "is" possible, but not currently what's common....

I'm thinking that the only way your going to do that is to tether a laptop. Perhaps an ultra portable like a Sony UX or an OQO. 'Course the limited battery life would need to be addressed. The Sony doesn't have a car charger available, but I'm not sure about the OQO.

We note today's (Mon, 03/05/07) FCC grant of Authorization for HTC's Titan/6800 and presume this WM5 device (first PPC with EvDO Rev A!) will ship to Sprint and VZW within, say, 60 days. (Whether the carriers are prepared to roll it out timely is another matter...)
The time-to-market for the 6800 may be a useful benchmark in antcipating release of the SCH-i760, which has yet to receive FCC-certification. This is a process that can take 8-12 weeks from completion of the filing.
Those vaguely skeptical of HTC devices should read the amusing correspondence included with the document set on the FCC site. Embarrassing gaffes like these would simply not occur with the big boys--Sammy, LG, Nokia, Moto, SE, palm, RIM, etc. (Link to FCC at Engadget.)
It's clear the 6800 has a good feature set. What's not clear is whether it's a quality product.
but this filing should at least clear the path for both carriers to hold to their roadmaps; with EV-DO Rev. A, Bluetooth 2.0, and beefed-up internal storage all in the cards, those roadmaps really can't come quickly enough.
BT 2.0 just might be the deal maker for me. I don't expect to see Rev. A in Hawaii within the reasonable lifetime of the phone, so that's kind of ho-hum for me. Now if BT DUN is enabled (without needing a client on the PC(No client for Linux Nokia n800)) on higher speed BT 2.0, that'll be the cat's pajamas.

That would be a bit of over-kill, to tether any laptop to show it on the dashboard screen, which would be smaller than most any laptop I know of. I'm just looking to plug a phone into a USB cable that dumps the video out. Simple request... difficult enablement... but, far more important things in life to deal with than that!
Referring to comments regarding Samsung's "marketing" the i760 at CES and FCC confidentiality, you said:
If that's a violation, then how did Apple get a confidentiality agreement from the FCC until May? They're already marketing the hell out of their iPhone.
Good point, and here's the story:
Apple's presumed iPhone confidentiality request won't go into effect until the product is granted authorization--and neither will Sammy's for the i760. Protection becomes an issue when the filing is "public."
There was a 'shopped Apple letter circulating that purported to request iPhone confidentiality until 06/15, but it was quickly exposed as a fake. Still, a similar and official letter will soon appear.
For both device-makers, what will happen is this:
When authorization is granted (perhaps within a month for both devices), we'll likely see letters requesting protection for the following:
1) External photos
2) Test set-up photos
*3) Block diagram
*4) Schematics
5) User's manual
6) Internal photos
*7) Parts list
*8.) Tune-up procedures
*9) Operational description
*Indefinite confidentiality can be requested for these items
For the items not subject to permanent protection, short-term confidentiality is available for an initial period of 45 days and may be renewed three times for a total of 180 days.
Now, from our earlier earlier discussion--
What's important about FCC confidentiality is that if the device vendor "engages in public marketing activities, or otherwise publicizes the device..." prior to the expiration of the short-term confidentiality, the protection ceases and the FCC places the restricted items in the public database.
One can argue that neither vendor is entitled to short-term confidentiality once the products are authorized and listed on the FCC Web site. Both firms have clearly violated the terms under which short-term confidentiality is allowed for non-proprietary items.
Apple, of course, is the serial offender. Its public marketing activities for iPhone--months before release--are the most aggressive in the history of wireless.
iPhone's featured, as we speak, on Apple's and Cing/AT&T's home pages. And then, we have the iPhone network TV spot at the 79th Oscars...
We presume the FCC isn't likely to unwrap Apple's kimono unprovoked. But if it fields c-o-m-p-l-a-i-n-t-s that Apple has "marketed" the device, it's obliged to remove protection. Ditto Sammy.
Incidentally, while we can't yet know the iPhone's FCC ID, it will contain the prefix "BCG."
I always wondered why i couldn't get schemadicts or internal photo's of any phone!!!! Thanks for the info BAM The more I learn about U.S. wireless carriers the more I dislike them.
is everyone sold on the 760 for thier next phone? are there other VZW options anyone is watching? I think the Ultra Smart looks pretty sweet, too bad it's GSM!!

I am still waiting on the i760 because its a Windows Mobile OS. I have way too much invested in software for WM.
What I really like about the Ultra Smart is how it slides via portrait or landscape. That is a cool concept. But as the article states, these devices are far from being ready.
I scanned the article and didn't see anything to support this statement, but if I remember reading earlier about this device (as it was getting alot of buzz) was that it was European frequencies only and there was little hope of it being released for the US market (which was the reason that there wasn't tons of talk about it, especially as CES). I could be wrong though and thinking about another device.

Is it possible that you're confusing the Ultra Smart with another phone, like the Nokia N95 for example? As far as I'm aware, the Ultra Smart is a landscape slider only, just like the i760.
I also really like the Ultra Smart, so if you have a link that will clear this up, I'd love to see it posted. Thanks in advance.

Here is the quote from the article. Scroll down to the middle of the article and you will see the double-slider phone.
Quote:
The F520 has Samsung's dual-slide design where some keys do double-duty as either number keys or letter keys, depending on which way you slide the screen. The idea is interesting, but it creates an awkward, somewhat arbitrary blank space in the middle of the QWERTY keyboard. The large numbers also make it difficult to read the letters on the right half of the keyboard.
The dual-slide mechanism wasn't very solid; it felt loose and easy to slide diagonally. That could be a prototype issue, however, or due to the demo unit being abused, so it's simply an issue to look for in reviews of the final shipping unit.
You were referring to the Ultra Smart F520, while I was thinking about the Ultra Smart F700. You are entirely correct about the F520 being a dual slider:
