Wifi is great when travelling.
Outside of mainland USA Verizon is no where to be found, especially for data.
Wifi is like a universal ticket for data, no matter where you're travelling... Far East, Caribean, Europe, etc
Just last month we were vacationing in the bahamas with our friends, and non of the US carriers have data roaming agreements there.
All of their blackberrys were useless. The hotel had free wifi and i was set!
The same when i travel overseas.
Cant live without it.
Ok.. got it. Hey, i'm headed to Cabo San Lucas next month. I guess i will use my Phone's WIFI to call using SKype.
In your honor, HIskies2, we will petition MOT to release an updated, CDMA/EvDO Rev A version of its most brilliant creation, the legendary MPx300 (MPx):
that would have been a pretty cool device! mot could definitely dredge that design up again and make it happen im sure... but they wouldnt do something smart like that... would they???
No they wouldn't, Miata. MOT prefers to kill its margins and chase Nokia for share.
When asked last fall what MOT intended to do as a follow-up to the RAZR, Zander's reply was..."More RAZRs!"
But ah, there's always hope. MOT Korea (sort of a skunkworks operation) reincarnated the StarTAC in '04 with a beautiful new rendition and is doing it again in '07.
BTW, to my knowledge, the MPx remains the sole WM flip to have implemented a QWERTY keyboard.

HMMMM I saw a guy in a store yesterday talking on a StarTac. I almost went over and asked him about his phone, but he was still talking and I didn't want to bother him.
His StarTac was all black plastic like the originals instead of black and metallic like the MS900. Hard to believe that an original StarTac could still be running.

Just wanted to chime in here... the i760 is not what was hoped that Verizon Wireless would pick up from Samsung. There is a much better phone out there with Video Conferencing support etc. The reason for not so hot hardware is because that is the lowest quality available options for that phone and VZW chose it.
They will be making a lot of money off of this phone. Most likely will be sold for $650 without contract. And will make around 76%+ profit on each phone. Again we get sub quality phones because of VZW's greed. And just for those in denial... there is no such thing anymore called subsidizing.
Weird thing... I've had Windows Embedded CE 6.0 since january this year and haven't had time to install it and start playing around with it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you have a WM 5.0 enabled i730 well before it was officially released? If you have been using an i760, please share more info about the phones performance. Thanks.
IDs consist of a prefix and a suffix. The prefix is mfgr-specific and remains constant. Sammy's code is "A3L." You'll see it on every Samsung filing and device label. The suffix is typically a product's model number, in this case, "SCHi760." So Sammy's FCC ID for the new machine is..."A3LSCHi760."
And indeed, here it is, the open-back proto photo wth label:
(Incidentally, the phone number on the label is just Sammy's C/S line, nothing special.)
An FCC search using the FCC ID for the i760--as well as other methods--returns no results.
Believe the ID number is entered by the applicant at the time of filing. But the point is that the ID is controlled by the applicant (Grantee), not the FCC. Thus, the appearance of a label/ID on a proto phone is inconclusive as to filing status.
As to "confidentiality," here are the posts to which MR earlier referred:
Still, the question remains as to whether the entire FCC filing (including the confidentiality request itself) can be suppressed prior to a product's public release. While this does not seem to be the purpose of "confidentiality" as illustrated above, we suppose anything's possible.
If so, such a blackout is a recent--and somewhat disturbing--development.
What's also notable is that, having shown the i760 at CES, Samsung stands in violation of the "marketing" provisions of FCC confidentiality. If now in effect, some protections of confidentiality for this device should be revoked. (Complaint anyone?)
An interesting comment. Your gross margin numbers imply that VZW's cost for this device is $369.32 (presumably before allowances, earn-outs, etc.). Correct?
Where does this info come from?
If your numbers are accurate, the i760 could be offered by VZW for $399.99 (2-yr) and still return a GM of 7.7%. Thus, no subsidy.
Of course, the intrinsic value of this device is closer to $150, but that's another story.
In general, your point's well taken. As Mark Twain said in 1897, "...the report of my subsidy was an exaggeration."

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
I assumed in the past that cell service providers didn’t look to make profits on equipment.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Are you saying that they look to these devices as part of their profit stream?<o:p></o:p>
If that’s the case they shouldn’t be crippling these devices and we should be allowed to buy them directly from the manufacturers.

pretty much OT, but i am setting up a cingular 8525 for someone right now and i really dont like having to spin the device around to type all the time. also had to hard reset it 3 times to get it to recognize the music on the micro sd card in wmp. the directional buttons are also too small - i definitely think the buttons on the i760 will blow this out of the water!

Bingo!!!!!

I agree. But I think if Verizon wants to be a reseller for devices, they still should be able to, but we should have the OPTION to buy the device direct without all there software and crap on it. They maybe should have a "Verizon version" we could purchase where we get support through Verizon, and then a manufacturer version that we can get support direct from the manufacturer, and not have some of the Verizon specific software on it. If you wanted that software, then you could buy it direct from Verizon, for example Wireless Sync. I don't use it, I don't need it, let me save some money, buy direct and if I wanted it later, I need to purchase it...
That would still give the option to people to get it where they wanted, and who/how they would get support. Verizon could charge a little more or less and give deals on bundles of software and possibly extended support....

Flip phone pocket PC?!! Where? Where? When that comes out, I will drop everything, cancel early, pay the ETF, etc.
When I first saw the Libra, I was like, "YEAH!" But then I found out it is not pocket pc. Then I also saw a supposed Verizon version. "UGLY!" i760? Only a dream for me now as I've left Verizon....
Check out the new Imate Ultimates.
They have a flipphone ppc in there.

From the business standpoint of Verizon Wireless... control is 9/10th of the law. If they allow us to have any one bit of control they know we will want more and they feel that they will lose a lot of revenue streams. Hence why ours cries are NEVER heard.
As for the post above... I had a i730 1 week before it was publicly available but did not have WM 5.0 until it was found on VZW servers.
Also the phones are a HUGE revenue stream of Verizon Wireless. Years ago subsidizing was used to bring in people with the promise of big discounts if they sign up. Now it is used as a lie to coerce more people into paying more for something that could be had 1/5 of the launch price.
If I didn't have other computer education goals to complete *cough* I would be willing soon to see how hard it would be to create a Win CE 6.0 image for the i730.
Yes, I did see the imate Ultimates! Looks like an awesome line, but seems only in the R & D stage. So when??????
As for the i760, yes I think it "MIGHT" blow the 8525 out of the water. WAITING to see!
And as for the 8525, I've been setting up more things on this thing and it only gets better. Found out that BT does in fact activate voice tags. Unit has remained stable, while overclocking at 500. Playing MP3 and WMA from the storage card with no problems. The horizontal keyboard is great since the keys are big. Oh, and I've used softkeyapplet to reassign and relabel the soft keys. This only gets better...and better....
So far, the only problem I've run into is trying to reassign the ringtone folder. I edit the registry, but WM5 still looks for the ringtones in the Windows directory. But maybe that's a MS thing.
Is there any word of any video out capabilities on the i760? I would love to do that on the i730, but my understanding is that it can't be done. I hope it can be possible with the i760.

I don't think it will have any. What are you looking to do with it?
