I keep seeing this both here and HoFo that it is held up for some sort of "testing".. I am continually perplexed by this for a couple of reasons.

I've been using this phone for 2 weeks.. no signal problems, no EVDO problems, no application programs... really it works rather well. I think I had to reset it once but all WM devices need that from time to time.
I wholeheartedly agree... as I've said before, this stuff we keep hearing about supposed testing failures simply doesn't make any sense. None of you that managed to score an i760 has opened up a flood of complaints about either hardware or software stability issues. And my guess is that at least some of you lucky stiffs are pretty geeky, and have already put the phone through paces that the VZW (and Sammy) testers probably never even imagined. So, I can't buy into the "failed testing" line, and frankly suspect that it's nothing more than a lame smoke screen.
None of the phones are real competition for the the i760. So, unless your hypothesis relates to supposed "exclusivity agreements", what is the relationship you're wondering about?
I'm not calling you out... I just don't understand what you mean.
I keep seeing this both here and HoFo that it is held up for some sort of "testing".. I am continually perplexed by this for a couple of reasons.
First I don't understand what there is to "test". This phone is a vanilla WM6 device and there doesn't appear to be any customizations other than the boot splash and the banner on the home screen. Couple of 3rd party applications for voice dialing and Picsel, but that's it.
Second, what would be the outcome of such testing? They can't really change the hardware.. MAYBE it's firmware but we all know Verizon releases phones and then shortly thereafter you get a firmware update.

I have been "Testing" mine for 2 weeks, and it works like a champ! I can't imagine what they think isn't working on these things!
I doubt the accidently shipped i760's have the final firmware. It's going to be interesting to see if Verizon will provide a way to download and install the final release. The more likely scenerio will be that you'll be required to return the phone and pay a fee to get it flashed to the final firmware release.
You have a good point, they may not have the final firmware. However historically they provide a downloadable or they have you bring the phone into the store and they flash it for you.
Can't imagine what they would gain by charging for it. But you bring up an interesting point.
I ordered the phone on the 14th.. but I did so under the assumption that it was due out any day so it was not with malicious intent that I did so. Yes, it was a loophole - but was given to us by one of the insiders and I honestly didn't think at the time it would turn into the debacle it has.
So.. I don't know if Verizon intends to treat me maliciously about it, but I would certainly hope not. So far they have been fairly decent about the whole thing during the time or two I called for support.
However I would hope that VZW would realize that in the end even us early adopters are customers too.. I have been with them for almost 4 years and I have 4 lines with them for my family.
I think there will be some ineptness on VZW's part until the phone is released at which point anyone who managed to get the phone will be treated just like any other person who bought the phone when it comes out.
I have waited like everyone else and I will still wait my every 2 has been up for like 4 months now because I'm waiting for "the best phone" verizon has to offer and I don't want to move on because I like Verizon all my friends have Verizon and to be honest I'm a supervisor at a major airport and our company phones are on sprint (nextel) most of my co-workers have AT&T (one just got an iphone) and I get a service throughout most of the airport where the others are always losing service so I will keep Verison I will keep waiting for the i760 (or some other model) I was even thinking about the LG X but why? Doesn't have wifi (just updated to wireless in my house for the i760) can't add programs (I might not end up adding any who knows) who knows how the internet will be and it looks thick (anyone even know who the size (w & l) adds up the i760?) and yes I know this is for rumors and I'm really not going that crazy just kind of upset and I know Verizon never came out and said when the phone will be out, so you could say that it isn't Verizon's fault, but they did buy the Samsung to be a Verizon phone and they have shown it on some of there adds had shown it (well maybe not Verizon) w/Verizon stamped all over it and lastly "lost" about 40 to customers so we know they have this holy grail of a phone so they all know we know they have this phone so why can't they just let the people know not to lose faith I would be happy for them just to say "look we just want this phone to be the best that it can be that's why we haven't released it yet" at least that would give most of us something... I don't understand the big secret? I mean when everyone found out about the west coast phone sku I'm sure they must have looked and saw that there call volume must have been HUGE so they must know that more than business people want this phone... I mean have we even polled this site to see how many people that have interest in this phone are even b2b bustomers? SO no more "this is a b2b phone they don't care about us" point blank this is a verizon phone..

You say when you call service they are fairly decent to you.
What have you had to call in for and what do they say when they realize you have the 760?
Wow... tensions are indeed running high in the forum! I have a solution. Let's find out who are the responsible parties for the decision on when to release the phone, kidnap them, and "stone" them with our current PDAs. I know that I, for one, would feel a lot better.
I don't think there's any way the i760 is going to be released before Thanksgiving. The Voyager was just announced for mid November release. Given that the i760 hasn't been announced yet, I can only assume it won't be released until sometime after that. Given that it'll be too late for the Christmas season anyway, I expect mid Q1 next year.

I think the more likely scenario is that we all flash our officially released devices with a ROM from one of the leaked out devices.

VZW, It's 2009! Time to embrace technology, not suppress it. - oops too late I've moved on over to the iPhone w/ AT$T!
This may prove useful because his office will be forced to answer everyone who sends him an email. Marketing types like to say yes. After having to say, "I know nothing." a few dozen times, he may realize he cannot keep saying it because everyone will respond with things about the delay that he may not have considered - like business account users jumping ship in droves. I have to believe he would like to hear it. As in most companies, the higher up they are, the more filtered they are by their staffs who only deliver good news.
I heard a rumor about the release of the i760. I heard that VZW chief of marketing, Mike Lanman, will respond to queries about the i760 by e-mail. After trying several variations of e-mail addresses based on VZW's naming conventions, this is the only one that didn't bounce back (at least not yet): mike.lanman@verizonwireless.com.
Let him have it (and put copies of all e-mails that are related to rumors about the release of the i760 in here).
Isnt it considered a monopoly when there is only one place that you can get a product from? And I know many will say no because you can go to ATT Sprint or god forbid T-Mobile. But the break down of each carrier is different in that VZW uses CDMA along with 1 other company.
But what im getting at is if you want a Cell phone to use you have to get it from Verizon. You should be able to pick up a phone for the actual distributer (Samsung in this case) and use it on VZW network.
Much the same way a computer works. You dont go to microsoft to buy a pc (keeping Apple out of mind here), you can go to HP,Dell, etc,etc to get a product you want that runs off their "network" of apps. I dont know just a rant here I guess.
this is my e-mail to Mike Lanman at VZW. the rumor is that he is the guy directly responsible for the delay of the i760. you can e-mail him at mike.lanman@verizonwireless.com and encourage him to green light the phone's release:
Mr. Lanman,
It pains me to say that I will be leaving Verizon Wireless in the coming months. I am currently an owner of the Samsung i730 Pocket PC phone. Your company has failed to provide me with the Samsung i760 or any other suitable upgrade for my phone, which was the most technologically advanced when it was released in July 2005.
Your company has released a variety of other phones, including some Windows Mobile devices, but none of them can seriously be seen as an upgrade for an i730 owner. For many of us, the purchase of those phones would be a downgrade since our i730s perform all the functions of those other phones and more.
However, the i730s are more than two years old and technology has advanced greatly. They are also going through natural wear and tear internally and externally, so users must either "downgrade" to a new phone or deal with a malfunctioning, banged-up phone. There are many phones, including ones with the newer version of the Windows Mobile OS, that users would like to be able to use. But it seems the sole focus of your company is to release Chocolates, Blackberries and a plethora of LG phones. What about the high-tech and business users who are waiting for a real upgrade to the i730?
The frustrating part is that we know you have the Samsung i760 in stock. Several customers have been able to purchase one because of a mix-up at your company. Either way, because of your company's long delay in releasing this phone, it's technology now relegates it to the mid-tier level of the current crop of phones available in the marketplace.
Perhaps the biggest insult to i730 owners is that your company has basically renenged on its New Every Two promise to provide all customers with "a more advanced phone, no matter how technology changes." (Read from your company's website here: http://www.verizonwireless.com/speci...ew_every_two/). Even worse, we will lose our New Every Two guarantee if your company's delays extend into January. Many of us bought our i730s in July 2005. The wording of New Every Two says customers have until six months after their contract ends to use it. That means for many people, we must use it or lose it by January, even if we don't have the Samsung i760 or another suitable upgrade to choose from.
This no longer concerns me. I am going to AT&T when they release the HTC TyTN IIPocket PC phone. But for your remaining customers, please do the right thing and make the Samsung i760 part of your release in the next month or so.
Much the same way a computer works. You dont go to microsoft to buy a pc (keeping Apple out of mind here), you can go to HP,Dell, etc,etc to get a product you want that runs off their "network" of apps. I dont know just a rant here I guess.
Give me an i760 already Verizon.
But that isn't entirely true though. You can only run Windows on those machines nothing else (well Linux but...) as you can only run osx on a mac (although I guess you can do VM for both).
I think the more likely scenario is that we all flash our officially released devices with a ROM from one of the leaked out devices.
I know we are all gonna be looking very carefully at the phones that get officially released to see if there are any differences. That does sound like a Verizon move.
Here is my note to Mike Lanman (hope you guys are right - otherwise I feel bad for the poor guy with the email address):
"Hi Mike:
I heard you might be privy to information regarding the upcoming release of the Samsung I760? I have been a big fan of Verizon and have been holding out for the "imminent" release of I760 for the last 12 months.
I can attest to a strong following of release rumors for the I760 in the PDAPhone market akin to that of the iPhone - even with out the same marketing presence and user base from Apple. One forum has almost 10,000 posts on it just for the Samsung I760!
Would love to see you guys beat the inferior AT&T. In many of your customers' and prospective customers' minds it is not about the Network nor is it about the "gee whiz" phone - it is about the Solution. The combination of the I760 with Verizon's network would be unbeatable - stop pulling your punches!
Hope to hear from you soon..."
Oh, and Mike, the Red Sox are going to win the World Series
(Heh - i didn't put that last part in, to all Yankee fans)
Don't know if it'll get there....but it was fun writing...
"Dear Mr. Lanman….
I’m writing to you to express my deep frustration over the release strategy of the Samsung i760, the XV6800, and the 5800….and to be completely honest, my growing disdain for Verizon Wireless….
Why is it so difficult to communicate with your customers who represent this market segment? Is this market that insignificant to your company? Unquestionably these device are already behind the market even before they’re released….and even more disconcerting is how long before the next generation of WinMo devices are released….2011?
It’s fine if VZW is blindly focused on chasing down the iPhone, but please communicate so we can make informed decisions… I can also comfortably say that my position is not an anomaly, but rather there are many that share my feelings…you guys are taking an absolute beating in reputation and loyalty among this segment…and rightfully so….
