Need outside keypad...

I've been using a 700w, then 700wx for over a year now. Because of that, my initial impressions of the vx6800 are not good. The reason is with the Treo's, I could take it out of my pocket, turn on the screen and just type a few letters on the keyboard all one handed and be making a call in no time.

Not having that is killing me. Killing me!!! The Treo may not be the greatest device for us power users, but it's one handed operation out of the box is awesome and I'm hoping the i760 can at least come close to that with the front keypad.

The front keypad is only numeric, so you may be in the same boat if you didn't like the 6800 ...

One guy who seems to be in the know at HOFO (at least has been right in the past and has leaked inside powerpoints, etc . . . may be one of the insiders here as well) has been saying for several weeks now it'll be late-Sept. He now said to expect something the week of the 24th of this month. Seems to jive with the general buzz of late with the phone starting to show up more in Verizon's systems and more employees claiming to have seen it or getting hands-on training with it.

Another poster also posted a screenshot of a table with pricing
. Not sure where this originates from, but still interesting. $399-w/2yr; $449-w/1yr ($50 rebate available for both.) $519 retail.

I know, I know. I'm hoping I can start to type numbers and it will filter down my contacts. But yeah, I might be in the same boat.

So, I'm having issues with the data connection on the 6800. (Every time I get a MMS the phone freaks out and won't ever connect.) Working with Verizon B2B data support and, of course they wouldn't say a release date, but he did mention he already had i760 training, so that's a good sign.

Not necissarily. I'm hoping when the slider is closed, the front pad behaves like the one on the PN-820. So it would still do smart contact search and speed dials. In addiotion, the PN-820 has the option to use either ABC regular cell rext input, or to use various T9 options.

One reason I think that might be the case (other than hope and good design) is that the manual specifically states the keypad functions as a number pad when the slider is open. By implication... that could mean it functions like the PN-820 pad when it is closed.

If it proves not to be true out of the box, I'm guessing there may be a third party solution to replicate that functionality.

Question Malfunction or Marketing??????

Does anyone have any speculation as to whether the delay is because of marketing, or because of phone design problems? As I see it, if the delay was a marketing decision , they can continue manufacturing phones and have a decent inventory built up once they do decide to release it.

If The delay is because of the phone itself, they cannot manufacture the phone on a large scale until the maladies are cleared up. That would mean that the initial release inventory may be small, causing a lot of us to have orders to the backorder category.

Any guesses?

Probably will. I was refering to SMS and emails. I would think speed-dial will work, otherwise why put the numeric keypad there.

According to last night's fortune cookie, 6-12-14-27-46-48. Good luck!

Just to say on topic, Sept 25th is my guess. Because I am out of town from the 22nd to 29th--although it's all good--I'll be in Maui!

Are you concerned that you will not find a VZW store in Maui? If the device is in stores, why would it not be in Maui?

The 25th?

I tend to think the 25th of Sept. is the accurate date because:

1. It is 33 days after the release of the Q9m so it would be within the bounds of the 30 day exclusivity clause (if there is one).

2. Although the Q was not, Tech is usually released on Tuesday's and the 25th of Sept. is a Tuesday.

I don't know for sure but I thought I would throw it out there.

Here's hoping I am right.

I don't think that is the case at all. If you look at the keys on the keypad they have the letters like a standard phone dial pad.

I believe that Equus or Mrailing one, did say that you could use the pad when the phone was closed to do repetitive text or T9.

First, I'd bet it would be available online before in stores. Second, my romantic getaway in Hawaii would be over if I went to a VzW store and bought an new i760! Actually, it wouldn't----the wife would get disgusted and leave, and I would stay with the "mistress-the i760"!

Although it's your choice for your religion, this isn't the place to be quoting scripture, since some people might not be practicing the same religion. Also this isn't the correct thread for this either....

Even though I guess we should all be saying a prayer to get the i760 to be out faster, if you want to continue quoting scripture, please do so in a different thread/forum.

This clearly should allow you to buy the i760 without any hassles from the old lady.

So I appreciate the loophole, but alas, it would be shot down!

I somehow have a hard time envisioning Christ choosing to spend time with a phone, as a higher priority than the church He died for.

My i730 is dying. I need the i760 soon!

Well, my i730 will no longer accept an SD card. It is about 2 1/2 years old and losing more and more functionality each day. It has refused to sync for months now and seems to be on its last leg. I sure hope the i760 is released soon or I'm going to be forced to buy something to hold me over.

Ok guys, i have been reading this thread for about a year now and haven't said anything, for starters why can't most of you stay on topic? its gotten to a point where we have a preacher now!!!! anyways i think i may have the most credible peice of information in a while. I just got off the phone with David from customer service, and i told him how i wanted a new Samsung PPC device (no motorola) and he said maybe he Palm or even the BB and i said no i need a Samsung slider just like mine because their hardware is generally far superior than any other brand and he sympathized with me and also told me that he knows they have had no real ppc update in a WHILE. anyways he did some research and even checked phonescoop but to no avail. than contacted his tech department and again... nothing. Here is where it gets interesting... he told me that since the business quarter is starting in october than he's guessing end sep or beg oct because they cant start a business quarter with no solid PPC phone. and that makes much more sense than 30 day deal or what not. also we all know how geared verizon is towards their business customers so they are probably keeping their best weapon (i760) for their best bidders (business customers).

Yea but it would be a nightmare I would think to not only select which letters you want, by either having to pass the numerical assignment to the button, and or have to hit another button to get straight to the letters and by pass the numbers for text. I remember trying to text on my previous cell phone prior to my i730 and it really sucked doing it without the i730s vertical QWERTY. I can practically do 70 wpm on y i730 QWERTY.

I just removed 17 posts, yesterday I removed 20 something posts, and tange1 removed about that many.

This is for everyone:

1. QUIT BASHING PEOPLE. This isn't what this website is about, and if you don't have something nice to post, don't post. Simple as that. For those that have been doing it, and you know who you are, consider this your warning.

2. Keep this on topic.

3. If a moderator posts a comment and asks someone to stop, for example, my post about the bible quoting, then there is NO NEED to continue discussing it, or commenting about it. I left the posts there so that those users would see my comments. This forum is meant for everyone, any religion, or no religion. Consider this like a school, separation of church and forum, especially when the topic at hand is the i760.....

4. This thread IS MEANT FOR RUMORS, which means we are going to hear from Jim-Bobs cousin's aunt who used to work for Verizon. But it's on topic, so they stay. It's YOUR CHOICE if you believe the person or not, but there is NO NEED to bash someone. If Ethan ever made the choice to post up, his post would show a count of 1... Although he is a newb, he would have information, so quit the complaining about new users. Sure some of them are a bit bossy, and haven't learned how this forum works, but if you have a problem with it, tell a mod by reporting the post, quick cluttering up the forums...

Question Release questions

Hi,

I have been following this and other i760 threads since June or so and it finally sounds like it might get released (or not...) I have a few questions:

1) What will the release be like and how will we know we can order one online and in a store? Is this the best place to look for the announcement?

2) I recall discussions about doing something special for the first power-on in earlier phones so as to prevent unnecessary apps from getting installed. Will there be advice about this for the i760 from the first buyers?

3) There seem to be a few i760s almost in the wild (VZW employees, testers, etc). Have there been any reviews or other comments based on actual experience as to quality, battery life, etc?

I'd like to thank all the regular posters for their patience and information. 'Sorry if this is the wrong thread.

tnx,
pp
