This does bring up something that I hadn't really thought of through. With all those exposed buttons on the front of the 760, how much smaller will the screen actually be than the 730? I already have to reach for my reading glasses to read my 730. There comes a point when you can only squeeze so much on a small screen and it still be useful. I also use my 730 for a gps display with a bluetooth gps unit. It won't be doing me much good if I can't read it. Perhaps it is time to unconverge and get a true pda and just a plain old phone. What a sad day.
No worries about the small screen, if you buy on launch day VZW will throw in free Lasik!

Haven't seen one in person, but there'sno reason the screen has to be any smaller than the I730. There's lots of extra space where the little plastic strip with the Verizon logo is. If you move the d pad over & make the buttons smaller, like they did, there's plenty of space for the numbers.
The screen size is exactly the same size as the i730, no loss in screen size between the i730 and i760.
The buttons being offset to the right is a good idea in my opinion. This is because the cursor is offset. I would say that the majority of people (greater than 75%) will use the cursor more than the number pad. Since it's offset to the left, it's perfect for the 70% of us who are right handed, and the five way cursor is in the right place.
Now personally I think the number pad is a great idea on the outside, not just for initiating the call, but for dialing numbers while in a call. Think about it this way. You start the call with voice dialing or via the contacts screen. You are in the call and now it wants you to press numbers for your passcode, or to navigate through the system. You can either type them on the screen, or use the number pad, and you won't have to open the landscape keyboard.
Personally, I think Samsung hit a home run on the design. With the advancements in WM5 using the device one handed with the cursor, it really is a good layout, and with the slider design (being mechanical), I think this phone is going to be a perfect blend of usability. Sure I like the portrait keyboard, but I use the number pad on that more than anything else. If they get some type of way to input text from the number pad (like T9), then it will be great for entering quick text from the number pad, which is even easier to do while driving that it is from the keyboard.
Let's wait and see what is going to happen from it, but so far Samsung has proven itself with the i730, have a good reliable product, and as long as the i760 holds that up, then this is going to be good.

I would be willing to place money that "Microsoft Voice Command" won't be built in to the i760, as it's generally not something that is included with phones, as MS wants the full price from the manufacturer for distributing it with the device.
Now, in the past, almost all Samsung devices have included Voice Signal, from Voice Signal Technologies, and I would say that Samsung would probably include that software again.
Pretty much everything we know about the phone is in this thread, and once new information is found, it will be posted. Currently the only screen shots of the device were the Engadget article, as the device wasn't allowed to be turned on at CES, or until Microsoft announced Windows Mobile 6. Since that just happened I am sure we will start finding out some more information on it.

I didn't think about the device being open. I guess what you are saying is that the Dpad and the Soft Buttons are dual use (keypad and QWERTY pad).

Don't forget about the i700 of a few years back. That too proved itself. I do like Samsung products as a whole, and the CEO's attitude is, "If you build it (right), they will come." They are now #2 behind Sony.
So when do we get the i760 group going instead of this i730/i830/i830w thread? It is only a matter of time, and I remember that ol' thread when the i730 was suppose to come out December 2004, and it didn't show up until June 2005. The thread began then.

As mentioned previously, once some more life is breathed in to the i760, we will see a forum for it, until then, we will have to stick to this rumor thread. It's still not a "sure" thing yet, but once we hear a little more about it, and conclude it is for SURE coming, then the admins will give us our own forum for it.

Am I the only one here that completely and utterly DESPISES the Landscape keyboard idea?
The main reason I even have my I730 and will take it to my grave is that it isnt landscape - potrait keyboard = one hand operation perfection. My device does everything I want it to do now and it just plain works. Other than battery life, I am completely happy with it. It works.
Being a techno geek toy junkie - I want a new device - but, I can not give up potrait keyboard. The first images I saw of the 760 had me frothing at the mouth but the images I am seeing for the Verizon version (let them figure out a way to screw up a wet dream - I know they can do it blind folded) will keep me from a new toy.
Landscape SUCKS. Who wants to juggle a damn device in their hands just to type something?
I completely agree. I don't want this thing PARTICULARLY as long as it keeps the landscape. Its a piece of garbage to me otherwise. I'm going to get as many months or years out of my i730 till a real upgrade comes out. If someone can find a person to make software and drivers (for WM5 not 2003SE) for a camera, we may be able to get that on it too, to match any other camera upgrade phone that is peering over the horizon. If you have any ideas on someone who can do that, let me know.

We don't need to bring up the whole camera thing again. It has been beaten to death, resurrected, shot, cloned, drowned, revived, smashed, and put to bed. There are PLENTY of threads talking about the whole camera stuff.
You are not going to get a camera installed in the back of the i730. There are users who have ties to Samsung, and many connections with Verizon, and they weren't able to get anything done. The only way you are going to get a camera to work on the i730 is to use an SD camera, and there are a few threads discussing it.
Please don't bring up the whole camera thing, it's been discussed too many times, and in two years nothing has happened, I highly doubt when the device is on it's way out, if it will happen now...

The only reason I mentioned it was because I have a friend who has already gotten a camera in it, made for 2003SE, and its taking dark pics. I wasn't asking about hardware, because he has one that works in it..but rather was just asking for software support for it..but I guess there's no real point to bring it up again in here then since there apparently either doesn't seem to be a desire for it, and/or a desire for it to be brought up again because off all the frustrated attempts for it to get it to happen.
I'm definitely liking what I see of this phone, particularly the number pad on the outside (for the reasons Michael expressed). Just wish it had a regular size SD slot rather than micro SD and a higher resolution camera.
BTW, congrats, Michael on your 6,000 post. Are you feeling old yet?

thanks for that link Mark AK, i had never been to that site - great info there. i tell you what looks nice even though it is a smartphone, is the htc vox/s710 - i think that is the gsm version of the supposed vzw 5800/htc libra...

No...you guys are not the only ones who despise the landscape idea. It just sucks, period. It is THE REASON I have decided this past week to go get a Treo 750 with Cingular now that 3G is available. The only two drawbacks of that devic is it is only 240x240 (less screen size for larger demanding apps like surfing web pages and my iNav iGuidance) and it has no WiFi.....but, while I was once adamant about not forgoing WiFi (and it is an utter disgrace that a device like the Treo 750 does not have it) I have decided the need for a portrait keyboard is too great. I have played with the 8525's and having to use two hands to not only hold, but also slide out the keyboard means single hand operation currently doable for some things on the i730 will not longer be possible. And, the Treo 750 is the best, if not the only, really good portrait mode Qwerty keypad smartphone that runs a touchscreen edition of Windows Mobile while also being quad band voice GSM and dual band data UMTS/HSDPA for use of 3G on both sides of the pond......I am currently in Spain for 3GSM and have to deal with the stupid CDMA doesnt work in the rest of the world stuff....and really, I would tolerate this incovenience if there was value....and there is no value to do so now with the landscape vision of the SCH-i760....
STUPID....
Just launch the SCH-i760 in the U.S. with Verizon, with CDMA/EVDO, WiFi and Crossbow and you have best in class......or, launch it on Cingular with Quad Band voice and Dual Band (1900 and 2100 UMTS/HSDPA) and WiFi and you can claim supremacy. YOU ARE SAMSUNG FOR CRYING OUT LOUD......DON'T GO COPY HTC!!! i730, in all black, 25% +/- thinner, no stub antenna, better stability and reliability of OS performance with hardware, some weight reduction......THAT IS ALL WE ASK!!!!!
I have a feeling that the portrait-like design of the Treo (I said landscape earlier...duh) with the keyboard always accessible and usable with one hand has spoiled me. Once the i760 is out, and I pop into a VZW store to play with it....I will WANT the i760 for its specs and the larger screen...but after thinking about it some more, and based on how quickly I dismissed the XV after playing with it...I suspect the landscape keyboard is going be too much of hurdle for me...
Awright, we may or may not be able to establish the veracity of this obscure intelligence, but it's waaaaay interesting.
This image comes from an unrelated HoFo post presented to confirm VZW's upcoming release of the Samsung U740, a small, dual-hinge QWERTY unit. It purports to be an internal VZW document.
Now, if you scoll down to proposed Q1 '07 releases, look at what appears:
Samusung (sic) i760 (Robin) 2/12 (a Monday)
To come back to the first post in this thread...tomorrow is 2/12. Seems safe to assume that the release is not about to happen, but wondering if tomorrow will bring some more news
Personally, I think this is a software shortcoming.
If one initiates a call with voice commands (what BT is all about), why doesn't the software allow a user to use a Push 1, Push 9 type of command?
Having to shysically handle the phone defeats the whole purpose of a BT voice driven system.

Revison A, crappy in phone camera, Crossbow, slower ARM Processor and no WiFi notwithstanding, the more I see of this phone, the less I understand it's emergence.
SCH-i760 Dimensions: 60 x 110 x 20 millimetres
SCH-i730 Dimensions: 50 x 104 x 24 millimetres
What is gained here? I sure ain't form factor.
