so just thought i would share with all my sammy sighting today. i was at a local circuit city today and i stopped by the vzw kiosk to inquire about the 760 and sure enough he busted out the dummy phone. it was amazing and it just made me that much more excited about th phone.
Dummy phone sightings from now on do nothing for this thread. We understand they're out there to play with if we wish. It adds nothing to the convo anymore. Anyone who'se mentioned it so far is grandfathered in....lol
Don't really believe VZW's worried about sitting on unsold inventory. To wit, the i730 sold out so far in advance of the i760's release that, say, a 10k-unit i730 reorder (w/WM5) could have, and should have, been made. Sammy would have been happy to comply. The out-of-stock condition was so long ago (what, April?) that we speculate VZW actually intended to release the i760 about 06/01.
If VZW's managing its supply chain with any modeling precision and just-in-time (JIT) inventory control, it should never end up with a warehouse full of unsold product when a device goes end-of-life (EOL).
The keyword in your reply is "control." As the Ma Bell legacy still lives at VZW, this is the source of its anal inertia. VZW insists on running a closed system--right down to the user-interface--to the extent technically and legally possible. No other carrier comes close to this level of micromanagement. More to the point, VZW's vaunted Network ain't that good and there are cracks in the competitive dike; the party's almost over. Even with a weaker network, AT&T is winning.
And yes, VZW "seem(s) to think the releasing of information on specific devices puts them at risk competitively." As we've discussed, with 66k employees who can whisper--and countless blogs, tech news Web sites and forums that can shout--this is just naïve and silly.
CES (etc.)? Once upon a time, it was a quiet, trade-only affair. Today, it's a Ho-House.
There is simply no way a carrier can keep a secret. So, in a vain attempt to impose an information embargo, the carrier withholds information from employees and diminishes their value as ambassadors of good will. In turn, the reps come here for insight to offer customers and prospects. Insane.
As to the other carriers, of course they know everything that matters about every VZW device, rate plan, service, promo, policy, ToS, store, vendor, churn and financial metric, etc. Competitive analysts are out "shopping" and "testing" VZW 24/7. And here's the best part: If AT&T's skunkworks wants to evaluate the competitive threat of VZW's i760, it audits this very thread (and finds, unfortunately, NO risk whatsoever!).
Thanks for the inspiration, Mr. Seidenberg, and good night.
OK, Morse code was Almost OT in the humor thread that was designed to be impossible to be OT in. It is most definitely OT here.

So you're saying that Dial Code **492743 ("HYBRID") isn't supported on the i760? Isn't this sort of thing implemented on all VZW smartphones and PPCs?
Can't imagine VZW's using more than a single Code for this function across all devices. And it would make no sense to drop support for HYBRID, as these modes serve a valid purpose.
Whatcha think?

P.S. Did other Dial Codes work for you during the i760 testing period?
Bam, could you expound what on purpose **492743 has? I am a bit confused...why would one want to toggle from ev to 1x?
thanks

In my experience, 1x is much more stable for the device (probably because thww device doesn't have to switch between evdo and 1x ) and it consumes less power. this is especially true in low signal areas or in areas where the evdo signal is spotty. i have a lot fewer soft resets when i'm in 1x only mode.
Has anyone been to "The samsung experience" in Manhatten lately? I'm in NYC all week and might stop by. If there's any PDAPhoneHome users who are in NYC who want to meet up and stop in at the samsung experience let me know via PM.

For some reason on WM6 a "Hybrid" code was not included in the embedded system. Now, was this due to these being the first test units I could not tell you honestly. Yet, it did accept just a few of the third party software and some it just flat refused to even install. We were given a certain instruction of codes to try out and that was to get into field test modes to determine how some dll files worked and how long it took to open programs. I can tell you this much, i760 never once hesitated or choked to figure how and when to open programs. It was very fast, BUT maybe cause I had very few "non-oem" software cramming up the processor. Yet I did load a ton of software just to see what worked and what did not and what really caused a "major" lock-up and had to do a hard reset.ouch....

Don't waste your time. I was there on Saturday and they haven't added any new pdas in about 8 months (Blackjack). Pathetic.
It is worth a visit to the store if you are interested in flat screen tvs. Make sure to check out the huge protype lcds and plasmas in the back of the store.
I can't provide details because of an NDA but I can say that Verizon has just slipped on its corporate release date with no explanation or new date. This is pathetic. You would think this phone is carved out of one solid diamond for the time it's taking to reach market.
bgates22 has it right for **492743 (HYBRID). Also, there are times when putting the device in EvDO-only mode is useful for testing the persistence of the EvDO connection.
In practice, we observe that the EvDO signal is harder for the device to acquire and much more fragile than 1xRTT. It simply requires stronger RF. Constant re-dials (sometimes, upon accessing every new Web page) can be frustrating--so you can just turn it off.
Can someone point me to the post that will instruct me on how to use this option (**492743).
Thanks
It depends on what dial codes your phone has. Search in the Treo Forums for "Dial Codes" and see what they have. The **HYBRID command was for the i730 specifically, and might not work with other devices besides Samsung phones...

Did no one catch this? Anyone else here heard that?
I was told that as well, but I do not care anymore. Hello at&t!

I thought they didn't have a release date yet. All the dates we've heard have been very general. It seemed that even internally, there was no specific date.

Yes we caught it, but:
A) it's a rumour
B) I can't say that Verizon pushing this phone back again would take me by surprise anymore...
