With all these delays and now the latest for GIN...I see why AT&T grew at a faster rate than Verizon did last qtr. 1.5 mil to 1.3 mil....very interesting, with a record low of 1.6 % churn.
AT&T has attributed much of this to a good handset selection. Hmmm, wonder if Verizon will figure that out. I hope so, I really don't want to go through the expense and PITA it will take to move over.
I still want to know why I need GIN on a PDA? I Wayne Orwig provided an excellent example of why we do not need it. Does anyone have a reason why we do or is this just a way for VZW to add ways to make money from people who do not know any better? Is it possible that people who need GIN (and I do not argue that there are people who do) probably do not need PDAs and that they are mostly mutually exclusive?

Perlmane, I agree that we probably don't need GIN on a PDA. Although my wife just got the new Chocolate yesterday, and I have to admit that the VZNavigator application is pretty cool (even though they charge you ever time you use it). I'm still trying to figure out how that works. I'm guessing they triangulate the phone, the satellite and the cell phone signal to figure out where the device is.
While I was at the store, I spoke with one of the managers, asking if he's heard anything abou the 6800 or the i760. He said he hadn't heard anything. When I pressed a little harder, he started to smirk. Then I pulled out my i730. It was clear he knew nothing about pda's, but when he saw my i730, he said something to the effect of, "oh yeah, a while back, I saw a pda that we're going to release. It was really cool. The screen tilted." I asked him to clarify what he meant by "tilted," and he described a pda that looks like the Kaiser. He said it is supposed to replace the 6700. I pressed harder about the i760, but he claimed to know absolutely nothing about it. Take that for what it's worth. I don't place much weight on it at all, as there is no evidence that any CDMA carrier will be releasing the Kaiser anytime soon, but this guy seemed to think it woudl be coming out on VZW. The more I pressed about there being no Windows Professional phones on display except for the 700wx (yes, there were no i730's or 6700's there), the more he started to smile, seemingly implying that "the Network" would be releasing something soon. I am shocked that the only "Professional" phone on display was the 700wx. Simply amazing.
Edit: the manager also said that they are typically trained on the device a few weeks before it's released and that they haven't been trained on any new pda's recently.

Reason: forgot to mention something
yeah, leave it to one of us CT peeps to freak everyone out!
we really need to see a new VZW internal document or something today - its been a couple weeks now right? anyone? anyone?
nothing new on the testman site still... this wait is brutal!!!
click on the Y!Messenger icon on yahoo's web page and it tells you that you need GIN to download. However you can go to the same address with a non-verizon phone or laptop and it will fire right up. I copied the URL and bypass the GIN stuff on my phone.
I'm starting to doubt this phone if it's failing tests left and right - GIN or not I don't want it if it's unstable. My i730 is a workhorse (well, used to be)

They are just rumours about the i760 failing left and right............I hope people stop spreading news that is NOT true. reasons for hold up are not because the i760 failed tests.it has passed all tests, GIN does work on it...geez I have no idea where this started. Anyhoo, VZW's legal dept is where it is stuck. I am not at liberty to say anything yet, but please people can we calm down a little and around last week or third week of August look for it. Honestly WM6 is very unstable in testing out with conjunction to the phone and BT stack. Realise that the WM6 is NOT a phone OS and now this OS has to merge seamlessly with the phone and thats where MS is scratching their heads. It was solved recently and the i760 is "almost" going out the door.
Miata, this was NOT directed at you but I just your post to reply

to be honest how many people who buy pdas will never use it to its full potential in the first place? i know i probably wont. like i read that towards the beginning of this thread as much as alot of you guys hate to see GIN on the 760 you arent the only guys buying it most of the new buyers this year are teens who are prolly going to use the feature i know since i have it added in my plan already im deffinetly going to use it when the 760 is released. you only can only please some of the folks in this case for you guys just hope the 760 even comes out and you can remove GIN just a thought
If GIN is on the ROM, then it will not be able to be removed. But, it will not be in the way either - unless VZW did something to have it interfere with things it wants us to buy versus to get for free. That would not go down well with anyone.

Unless some enterprising person begins hacking the ROM. Wouldn't it be nice to have cooked ROMs like they have @ XDA Developers?

Honestly my feedback during the test times to VZW was this>>
1. GIN not required as "most" buyers are business customers
2. V Cast is not suitable for Business Enterprise customers as the IT dept needs a standard interface to control deployment.
3. Add more capability for IT depts to install VPN clients on the fly with strong encryption. Exchange servers to have a "no-brainer" access.
4. To tie in the phone number to the business servers so the IT dept's job is easier to push mail with ALL types of attachments. {I cant tell you how this was done by MS yet but it was pretty cool the way they showed us and very safe too ( geez, I should caution myself on that statement I made )}
there were more but the NDA stops me from going further.
That said VZW truly wants to see if they can sell this to a new consumer base as in "younger generation" of today with SMS, TXT and Vcast and GIN. I think they will be going down the wrong road. But, hey they are driven by the almighty dollars.

I laughed for about five minutes after reading this:
"Though others have argued that wireless operators routinely crippled functionality and features that users want in order to protect other services, (Verizon general counsel Steven) Zipperstein says that's not the case; in fact, all Verizon is out to do is safeguard network quality and the user experience. He points out that allowing things like placecasting (SlingBox) might be nice for some users, but widespread usage will degrade the network for most others."
He has balls, I'll give him that. By the way, can someone who has used the i760 tell whether VZW will continue to disable the phone when wi-fi is used?
