Didn't someone mention there would be a big announcement before release? Perhaps this is it? But I thought none of the PDA phones had the chip in question? Ah, what do I know except I don't have a 760 yet!
This answers why we never saw Verizon's name on some of those lists. I'd be willing to bet this also affected launch dates due to Verizon trying to show so "good will" during the negotiation phase.
then that means the release date should be tomorrow. 7/20/07
You are spot on, "Ethan" isn't involved in the decision making, in fact, he has moved positions away from that area.
For those that don't know, a friend of mine works for Verizon as an exec, he doesn't want his name known, or much about him known, but we go way back, and he's worked his was up in Verizon starting in the late 90's as a sales person while he was going to school. Someone on the board said something about Mission Impossible, and called him Ethan Hunt, and the name has stuck, which he IS proud to be called.
Ethan only is relaying the information that he is able to see or being told through his position, and stuff that won't destroy his job, or give away his position or identity. A lot of time, he refuses to give me any information and just talks life with me, other times he volunteers stuff.
It sounds underground, but it's just stuff from general conversations with him, which I talk to him at least once or twice a week since we are pretty close friends.
Ethan did have an i760 he used for testing for a bit, and returned it when requested. Ethan has mentioned dates before, but as Verizon does, they got pushed, but he has relayed when it was "suppose" to come out.
I talked to Ethan today and his exact words were "I don't know, but since I haven't heard anything, not looking good for next week, but the last I heard was 'end of July'." Again, I am just being nice and relaying what he has told me. I don't see copies of stuff, it's just talk in general conversation. He also does drop in from time to time and read the boards, and laughs at a lot of the stuff you guys talk about, and many times he's called me laughing and telling me to get to the board and read, which he did in this instance.
Ethan's job is now unrelated to the hardware side, but he still works with them and still hears stuff, which he passes along. So Ethan's "information" is as much of a rumor as anyone else's, but I tend to trust him about it, especially when he showed me his i760 for the 2 mins he let me hold it.
He could be wrong, but he's getting it from the horses mouth and passing it on. He said he should get an update either tomorrow or Monday in one of his meetings, and he would let me know...

Having said that, he obviously (and admittedly) does not have the best information and is not actually involved in the release decision. Even if what he says is accurate when he says it, things clearly change, as has every date he has given. I went back through posts to see what he has said, and it started back in April or early May with "soon," "this month," "may," "end of may," "still end of may," to the current July, end of July, still end of July, etc.
I don't think it is a question of the source or even the information he has. I think it is just the nature of the way VZW seems to release phones. I don't think they really even make an effort to just pick a release date and stick with it. Instead they seem to have a general idea of a window they are shooting for, maybe set a date later, and then push it back if they don't feel completely ready. It prevents much of an accurate forecast or release date leak from anyone until right up before it happens.
Having said all of that, I greatly appreciate our inside friends like Ethan who share what they have. It is what makes this thread and this game interesting. Unfortunately, it is also what has kept me without a new pda phone since October!

drats....if this is the reason everything was held up my complaint letter will be pointless. guess it's lucky i'm a procrastinator and still haven't sent it.
is VZW not the bunch of evil morons they're made out to be? was all my VZW outrage misplaced? will i still choose the Kaiser over the i760....YEP!
anyway, $6 bucks a handset will be a hefty payday when all is said and done.
Sorry, I take back what I said....MAYBE the settlement was part of it, but I still think jerking around with GIN is the main reason we are sitting around with our i730s up our......oh wait that's not an i730....I have a Q....much more comfortable.

Well THAT is the problem right there! Now if it was Jim Phelps passing this info, we'd be all set! <g,d&rlh!>

I can't wait. He is clearly the most credible source we have here, especially since you have actually known him for so long. I imagine he is a little better informed than the average store rep or business rep we get to hound for info. I'm still jealous that he actually let you hold his i760. I think I could be pacified for a couple of more weeks if I could just handle one.

If you go dig you will see that we had lunch together and spent about 2 hours chatting, and it was only when he left that he showed me, and then grabbed it when I started to play, and say, ok, gotta run. I literally didn't get to do anything but slide it open, look at it, and pull the stylus out. He did it to tease me and he knew it would drive me nuts, but he wasn't suppose to show me in the first place, which is why when I started to play around on it, he took it away.

Mark_A_K: I don't know how many others there are who can't use / carry a cell where I work, but I am among them. So, yes, my i730 now sits in the car during my work hours. I can tell it's lonely. It even got so upset, I had to slap it up the side of the head; an 'electronic' slap of course, I'd never physically slap it (that's reserved for flies n other similar ilk). I.e., hard reset & reinstall.
Ummm, no... Not even close. I don't work for Verizon, I don't test stuff for Verizon (unless they want me to), I am not under an NDA (unless they want me to be by letting me test and use an i760 and the newest PDA devices...).
Ethan is real, but chooses to not be here in a posting sense, and does enjoying reading your comments about stuff, as we do talk about that when on the phone.
Ethan isn't Equus, isn't me (mrailing), isn't anyone on the boards (he has an account with a 0 post count).

Michael the moment that you were able to look at the screen of the phone that Ethan gave you to play with, did it say EVDO "A" or anything indicating "A" from the get-go?
Since the constant warnings of completely off topic discussions have gone unanswered, posts that have NOTHING to do with the i760 or discussions relating to phones, will be deleted. This isn't something we like to do, but with the amount of posts in the last 24 hours completely off topic of this entire website, have been moved to the lounge, and those posts in threads on a different topic have/will be removed.
Again, please keep your posts on topic, especially talking about "a pda phone".
Also, I know that a little joking and humor goes back and forth, this is fine, but keep it one topic. This doesn't mean you post a post about the iPhone and then a simple line being "oh... haha, to stay on topic, I am waiting for the i760". Take those discussions elsewhere. We have a iPhone forum. We have a Lounge forum (for whatever else you want to discuss). We have other threads you can start to talk about marketing relating to the Verizon.
Let's just keep from cluttering the forums, simple as that...

It's been reported no EVDO A chip. Once we see the schematics of the i760 on the FCC forum, namely the chip for data, then we can really find out.
Nothing on a device says EVDO A or 0. Also it's been said that even the 6800 which has the EVDO A chip, currently has it set to 0 only, and won't be available till later.
So we will probably NOT have EVDO A on the i760, and even with an EVDO A chip, it would probably be a while before it was available, especially seeing how slow Verizon is on doing upgrades.
