I know, I know.... nothing concrete, but I spoke with my business rep today. He seemed pretty knowledgeable about the phone and didn't sound like the everyday rep. He said there is a "Tenative" release date of mid next month. He also stated that it could come out (trying to get me to read between the lines) sooner, as he is starting to get more and more info on it. He promised an email as soon as he has a firm date (hopefully have some info in the next few days. He said pricing, he can't "guaruntee", but he expects (again, trying to get me to read between the lines) at the $299 price point.

This is great news. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully the mid-next month date is just a back-up in case something goes wrong. Definitely keep us posted if you hear from him!
Does anyone have any thoughts on the speaker fidelity compared to their i730? The speakers were in the back on the i730 and appear to be sandwiched between the sliding keyboard and screen on the new i760. Therefore...if it is closed, the sound would only be able to come out of the crack in between the two pieces and therefore sound muffled?
I know we have to wait for this to come out but I was trying to change the topic back to the actual phone and am interested if there are any other examples of phone hardware with a simliar setup. I am VERY impressed the quality from the i730 and would expect the same or better from the i760.
Oh yes...the darn business reps are as inconsistent with their message on this phone release as they come...what is up with that? Too much speculation.
Man, I really hope Apple changes the way everyone does business. I will never understand why cellphone companies think they get some advantage by keeping phones secret as if national security was at risk. We, and presumably all of their competitors, already know the damn thing is coming. Is the when really that critical in the competitive landscape? The release of most consumer products, from watches to computers to cars, is known well in advance. I mean, Apple announces in January that the iPhone would be released in six months. Then a month in advance gives an EXACT DATE and a week in advance gives an EXACT TIME.
Apple could advertise in advance because they were not cannabalizing sales. They had no other product in inventory and needed to generate excitement. In the computer field Apple is the most tight-lipped of all manufacturers, even suing websites that put up advance info about things that Apple isn't ready to talk about.
Of course WE know all about this stuff, but do you really think the average Joe does? Even business people don't. If there is a newer latest and greatest coming out in a month, the natural instinct will be to wait for that, just as we are doing.
You're probably not old enough to remember Osborne Computers. They were early luggables with a small B&W CRT. They were very popular, until Osborne announced a new model coming out down the line. The company went bankrupt in the maintime because it's sales dried up completely. I'm sure that example is taught in many business schools.

Seems odd, if not improbable, that the phone will be at a $299 price point since current pda phones on verizon are going for more than that. Even the XV6700 is priced at $399 (minus $100 online discount), and that phone is almost as old as my i730.
It seems this is going to be a flagship phone for VZW, so i cant see pricing less than $499 with 2 year contract... and then discount/rebate for signing up data.

Just my 2 cents...
Just look aback at what folks were getting into i730s for when they came out. $299 is not too far off.

I talked to my Business rep today. He told me to stop calling him and get a job.
haha, mine said the same thing!! -He said, "shouldnt all you internet geeks be at a dungeons and dragons rally or something, instead of calling us every five minutes!?"

I paid $499 with 2yr contract pricing in March of 2006. TOO high in my opinion. I think they could sell many more units if the price point is lower at $299. Makes it a sweeter deal for the iPhone response.

he has us all wrong....it's warcraft!!
Sooo true. To pass the time you guys should watch E3 on G4 or go to the movies.

That was b2c vs b2b. Don't know if they offer further discounts for biz customers.
I don't know how much we can believe this but I recieved an unsolicited email from my Business Account Executive of Verizon Wireless Business and Government Sales today who shared this with me........
Ryan,
Just a note for you, the Windows PDA's are being pushed back by the Broadcom vs.. Qualcomm supreme court case (they make the chips in the phones). I am hearing end of August at the earliest. Sorry for the bad news.
have any of you heard that this might be the reason...I had been curious how much this lawsuit was going to affect the release of new cell phones??
<the curious ryno
Tell your Account Executive to try again, and this time make his lie a bigger whopper. ALL PDA and Smartphones are EXEMPT from the ITC ban. That is one lame excuse to come up with and may well show how little this Account Executive is interested in providing you with the i760. Dodging your inquiries and interest in the i760 is one thing, making patently false statements to a customer should get this knucklehead in trouble big time.

yeah...early 80s...i wasn't too concered about portable computers back in elementary school....lol. but some quick googling, wikipedia, etc., seems to suggest that the Osborne Effect was exaggerated and that after a slight dip, sales picked back up. but subsequent debt and bad decisions ultimately ruined the company. still, that's an interesting story and it appears to have become legend in electronics circles.
but by this logic, AT&T's sales should have nosedived in the months before the iPhone was released. i don't remember hearing that their sales were slowing, though, even for PDA phones. it would be interesting to find out.

Good point, but I think the iPhone was a unique prodcuct that was going to generate a lot of profit and bring in new customers from other carriers. There regular base probably wasn't affected.
I guess I should end this subthread on my end. Don't mind if you get a parting shot.
