There hasn't been this many people logged on at the same time in a long time.
I was just thinking the same thing. And have you noticed that most of the new posts are related to 6800 -> i760 -> and the iPhone (in that order I believe.)
@ CRMealy - that's what you get for posting!
Speaking of internet capability, one of the things that the iPhone pushed so hard was the internet browsing. IIRC, Dangerous or MRailing mentioned the i760 will come with Picsel broswer. If that's the case, that will be nice in my book.
With all the euphoria spreading around this thread, I don't want to wet on anybody's charcoal, but I received this message from our corporate accounts guy:
The i760 is in the final stages of testing. Samsung is working on some software patches, as it failed some recent tests.
We are aiming for a possible September launch (if there are no more bugs).
I like what others have been hearing better, so I'll keep my hopes up for July.
OT, regarding iPhone vs. i760 internet surfing, I came to a realization the other day: even though I have Picsel on the i730, which allows me to view web pages essentially as they appear on a PC (although I'm sure it doesn't render pages as well as Safari), I've found that I almost never use Picsel and that when I use my pda to surf the internet I STRONGLY prefer to visit only mobile friendly sites (espn mobile, engadget mobile, boygenius report, etc). I do this for 2 reasons: (1) the mobile friendly web pages are also very easy to use "one-handed" and (2) there is no excessive scrolling required to review mobile friendly web sites.
On the iPhone, there is no such thing as "one-handed friendly." I know it can be used with one hand, but not as securely as putting a death grip on the device and simply using the d pad. This is how I prefer to surf the net when I'm on a pda. I don't want to drag my finger all over the screen just to read a newspaper article. I want to open the article, and simply press the down arrow. Whenever I see that iPhone commercial showing the front page of the NY Times displayed on Safari, I think how ifrustrating it would be to read a newspaper article on the ihpone.
My two cents on i760 vs. iPhone- If VZW wanted to really use the i760 to take on the iPhone- they should give away a Chocolate with every i760, and enable you to share your own music through a GIN feature. That way, you'd have your business cake (i760) and be able eat (your Chocolate ) better battery life and entertainment too, thus blowing the doors off of the iPhone's compromises. VZW has lots of buy one get one (or more) free deals and you could use your online account to swap phones on the weekend.
Also- I received my i730 on July 11, 2005. My birthday IS July 16. Progression of business days-wise, I predict a July 23rd release of the i760!
I'm very aware of the quote that you are referring to. It was a great thought except for a few things:
1) It was prefaced by, "I am beginning to think he is clueless and has just been making stuff up as he goes."
2) Multiple posts regarding that same rep's thoughts were questioning that rep's validity.
3) You agreed with me. Maybe, I wasn't clear, but that's what I'm saying - Verizon has built a business model that revolves around their network, which includes "in calling".
4) You've got to be kidding me when you say that the i760 does the same thing as the iPhone. Maybe the selling points that you are interested in cross over, but the iPhone has its crazy touchscreen, super sexy body, slick interface, great internet, blah blah blah blah blah. Geez, we could write a book about why these phones are different. I don't need to keep going, there are many before me who have posted why these phones are different.
Thinking about it again (especially after reading Mark's post), I think you may be right . I still don't see Verizon delaying for marketing, but it does make sense that they would see some of the features of the iPhone and try to make their "closest" product a better competitor. Terribly disappointing if that is the only reason for the delay, because I truly believe the units aren't competitors. And...for that reason, if you were to put a gun to my head, I still say that GIN and VCast and any other software that ties us to Verizon is being added for the purpose of tying us to Verizon's network more than making it an iPhone killer. Thanks for the reply.
As has been stated many times before, there's lots of thoughtful info out there, but we really won't know who was right or wrong until the phone is released. It'll be interesting to see who was right, and I'm sure that we'll all be just as quick to give kudos to those who were right as we were to retort against those we think are out to lunch.
I prefaced my posting of the email i received for a reason. I am not presenting this as fact....it is what he "said" in email.
That being said, i think you are a bit naive to think that VZW, or any consumer/retail business, would not delay a launch for marketing.
Verizon lost customers because of the iPhone, they knew they would. They also knew that hyping a device before/during the iPhone launch would be muted by the iPhone hype.
The answer i received by the rep made sense to me, that is why i shared it. Is it true? How the hell would i know? It certainly seems to fit in with the other pieces of the puzzle posted here.

as someone who is in the telecommunications industry and a part of many new product developments and testing, let me assure you that testing was completed, at the latest, this past April (based on the "original" launch date). If there are any further "bugs", they are a result of new software being added and then additional testing.
It's amazing to me that all of you are OK with Samsung abandoning the vertical keyboard which is so similar to the Treo and Blackberry. I found this soooo much better than my wife's 6700 which she returned 1 week later.
If there were a lot more support for the vertical slide out keyboard, maybe Samsung would bring it back as the very first pictures of the i760 showed. I also liked that the original pictures showed a backward facing video cam for vid conferencing...
SOMEONE FROM SAMSUNG! PLEASE BRING US INTO THE 21st CENTURY WHERE THE REST OF EUROPE AND ASIA HAVE BEEN FOR THE PAST YEAR OR TWO!

i have actually thought about this as well. I predict that one of the first post release threads will involve complaints about this.

Samsung DID NOT abandon the vertical keyboard form factor. That lives on in the SGH-i760 which is a GSM phone that is being marketed in Europe.
The SCH-i760 is the subject of this forum, and is a CDMA phone, and the form factor was presumably picked or defined by VZW, not Samsung.
So, blame VZW, not Samsung.
There's been plenty of discussion in this forum by folks who don't like/don't think that they'll like the horizontal slider form factor. However, I think even most of them just want to see the phone hit the stores.

I too would like to see it hit the stores, but I would like to see VZW (as you say it is their fault alone) bring out the European model with CDMA & GSM instead of WIFI just as they did for the i830!
VZW/SAMSUNG: IF YOU'RE READING THIS! I AM NOT ALONE!
I believe that would be the perfect convergence device!

Although I know that the SCH-I760 is somewhat geared towards business users, VZW's request of the horizontal keyboard might have something to do with VZW's goal of broadening its SCH-I760 target market. Products such as the T-Mobile Sidekick, which has a horizontal keyboard, are popular amongst the same target market as GIN and VCast. If VZW is willing to delay and bog down its phones to attract those who would want GIN and VCast features (as has been reported), it would not surprise me that the change to a horizontal keyboard is for similar reasons.

By the time we saw pictures, the product was way to far through development for our opinions to make much difference. MAYBE they did some focus groups, but I doubt it.
The only people that could have made a difference were the product managers at the various carriers.
I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but some people complain too much. If you don't like it don't get it. I, on the other hand, can't wait for my imperfect i760. IMHO, if it was perfect we wouldn't need forums like this and what fun is owning a device like this if you can do stuff to improve it.
