What I don't get is they already have so many problems with vcast and pda plans. Twice now I have had to switch to my old phone while waiting for yet another refurb replacement phone. Both times while I had my old phone activated I had to deal with data charges due to picture messaging while that phone was active (I don't have a data plan on my i730). The system does not seem to know the difference between the two types of devices. My bet is you will be able to use GIN if you have a data plan for an extra fee or not be able to access it at all if you don't have a data plan.
But whatever, they will find a way to milk us one way or another...

the problem with VZW is how they try to do things - through force instead of incentive. people are not adverse to changing their home screen and even adding an extra click to get to their today screen - think of SPB Mobile Shell. even if they included GIN or VCast the way they do wireless sync, where you can choose to install it or not, it wouldn't be a problem. if done that way, these wouldn't be that obtrusive.
but when you try to intertwine this junk as the primary UI and make it hard as hell to remove or disable that's when all these delays happen. i don't think there would be this much hassle if this was just some type of add-on suite they wanted to include, like Live Search. i think they want to make this primary functionality and probably embed Windows Media inside it somehow for music and video, and maybe even e-mail since they are coming up with some new hosted e-mail service. i just know they are trying to make this something that is capable of reinstalling itself from ROM so if you delete it, it'll pop right back up upon reset.
UPDATE: just saw the flash file. very nice. somebody, superimpose the GIN screens from another phone on to this and let's see how it looks. not that we'll keep it, but i have to see what's delaying this mofo.
Re: GIN, VCast, etc., I agree with the above. I am happy for it to sit on there if it is unobtrusive and out of the way, where I'm not forced into it. And that nothing is crippled because of it.
I don't know much about VCast, but would VZW have to revise its terms of service to now allow streaming video? Might be good for illicit Sling users.
