I think I've found the fountain of youth--it's called Verizon Wireless!
If the latest rumors are true, I may never have another birthday and, thus, will never be any older. . . .

is that really you mark???
it is a tempting thought though! it does seem like there will be many amazing upgrades for it. my wife now says to me everytime there is a commercial for the iPhone "i cant beleive you didnt go get an iPhone yet" and i keep telling her that verizon has some awesome stuff on the horizon. she actually ended up saying to me the other day "yeah right, you have been waiting for the i760 since last year, you will end up with something else"!!!
Yes I am so excited about the iPhone only becuse it is the first cell device not crippled by the service provider.
Things are going to look a lot different out there with the next 12 months.

Well, it is sad that Verizon continues to drag their feet. It just cost them about 30 equipment sales with me. I manage about 110 lines with Verizon for our corporate office and outfitted about 25 of those with i730 devices and unlimited data a couple of years ago. I was fortunate enough to carry an i730 from an Engineer in Data Sales a few weeks before release which sold me on the converged device. Now I sit here 2 years later awaiting something to move my users to and there is nothing on the Verizon horizon. I began testing Aircards last month when the i730s began failing and have sinced rolled out about 20 which were being used in conjunction with the current 730 user base. Since this delay continues to have no end in sight, we have begun the process of moving all of the users to Aircards only rather than utilizing both methods of connectivity. So, in the end instead of Verizon having a couple of dozen hungry users with new PDA phones and unlimited data plans on throughout, they are only getting revenue from the Aircards and I am rolling out free LG 8300 flip phones. Way to go guys.
This is ridiculous...i just called another store and the same story..."...uh I don't know...uh" Very frustrating. They need to leak something before we all jump ship.
once again, we all need to understand.... those in the stores will know that the i760 has been released when they put one up on display on the wall of the store they work in. And, even then, they may still not know!
Things are going to look a lot different out there with the next 12 months.

i think you are right. this should be the wakeup call for samsung, htc, motorola, ms, and Palm - get your act together! this unbeleivable hype surrounding the "i" should show all the manufacturers that the public is now beginning to understand/want/pay a premium for converged devices.

How do you figure it's not crippled ?
While it's undoubtedly true that Apple had more leverage than most vendors, they made compromises - we just don't what they are because unlike Windows Mobile, we don't have a baseline to reference.
Crippled aspects (from my point of view):
(a) It's locked to AT&T. You can't use it on another GSM provider
(b) You can't load 3rd party apps on it.
For all the bitching and moaning about VZW crippling the handsets they market, you can still load 3rd party apps on it.
(c) No tethering.

a major crippled feature is the lack of iChat or any type of IM program. some blogs are saying that's one of the only major concessions Apple made because AT&T wanted to ensure their stream of text message revenue.
In terms of the current landscape for carrier crippling and feature-set parlor games, some may find this recent WSJ piece of interest. It's called "AIR WAR: A Fight Over What You Can Do on a Cellphone." It was posted to PDAPhH's General Discussion thread.
Why is it that Sprint can have such a wonderful network and not do more with it than they have? They really suck @ the marketing side of things apparently.
A phone running a real OS, but you can't install 3rd party applications? If that's the future, you can keep it. As much as I hate Microsoft based devices, at least they did something right.
the iPhone is crippled, but Apple is really the first phone where a manufacturer exerted any real influence over the carrier. the manufacturer's only goal is pleasing the consumer with the best phone they can make, while the carrier has duel of goals of pleasing consumers/crippling phones to sell consumers added services to fatten the bottom line. Apple, which really cares about its image and product performance, basically said, "We don't want to have our products dumbed down by you with consumers ultimately blaming us because they fall short." If more manufacturers did that, there would be a sea change in the industry.

Clearly not a good outcome for your company and voice data users, I agree. But from VZW's perspective, is this a "loss"? Not sure that VZW (or any service provider) looks to equipment sales revenue as a value driver, as opposed to service revenue. I think aircard data plans are more expensive than PDA data plans, so by splitting voice and data plans VZW might actually get more ongoing service fee revenue. I could be wrong...

this story truly pisses me off. i think this is the nail in the coffin for me. i will be going the unlocked GSM phone route. we have to start supporting the manufacturers like Nokia, RIM and others who actually are fighting to give us all of the features we crave despite the idiocy of the carriers.
as long as people want subsidized phones, this is what they'll have to put up with. so, really, i can't blame the carriers. but it seems like there is a lot of room for some kind of niche carrier in the u.s. for people who want unlocked, feature-rich phones.

WOW this is really starting to open up.
I am really thinking twice about the i760 now.
I'll just keep my i730 and see what happens within the next 12 months........

Apple already dumbed it down to start with. No 3G? Wow.
