Long time lurker, first post. I am very excited about the i760 like the rest of you. Further back in the thread I read about Rev. A and the rollout by the end of the year, I just found this on PC World's website:
(And welcome to all the new, non-iPhone-dazzled, mobile avengers.)
While VZW's declaration of victory with EvDO Rev A is noteworthy, the build-out is oddly moot--given the absense of worthy handsets.
For openers, the i760 won't, apparently, present a solution.
While the HTC xv6800 will support Rev A, not sure we can bet it will be Rev A-active upon release.
Ditto the HTC S720/Libra/xv5800.
Anyone know of any other forthcoming Rev A handsets for VZW or Sprint?
Given such limited support, a fair conclusion is that VZW's in no rush to deploy Rev A to the handset crowd. Those $60/mo aircard data plans are just too profitable.
--BAM
P.S. As has also been noted, even Rev 0 coverage is pretty crummy in many zones. Hey, VZW, how about fixing Rev 0 before spinning the Rev A mirage?! Thank you.
Currently 2GB is the maximum transflash/microSD size. At CES, CBIT, or CTIA (can't remember which) this year, SanDisk introduced a 4GB microSD card, that would be out Q2/Q3 this year, which would make it the largest microSD card.
So there is no such thing as microSDHC...
Now that there is such thing as microSDHC, do you think that this phone or any other is going to be capable of taking this card? Because if so, that evens things back up with the OVERHYPED iphone. SanDisk | Corporate | Press Room | Press Releases

Is iHype a word? Maybe I should beat the Jobster to the punch and trade mark it!

You can make fun of the iDorks waiting on line for hours, as I have been as well - but I might have the iPhone right now if it were a Verizon phone. I'd be at least trying it out....
Well, I got to hold a pre-production model in my hand and the samsung rep told me that other reps had got post-production models. She hinted that a July release was likely for VZW. I gotta say though, it was a real nice piece of work. It was fast and easy to use. While hers wasn't active, I was able to pull up some documents and it functions very much like the iPhone for viewing documents. You can pull up and down to read more, and while it doesn't have a true "zoom" feature, I was able to get it to make the text magnify. The keyboard slid out and even for it being thin, it didn't feel cheap or like I wasn't really typing on a keyboard. My favorite was the camera, even though it was a 1.3 MP, it really felt like a 2. I was able to use it just like a real digital camera, even the buttons were what you would expect for a normal camera. The sound quality for the music was as good as most PDAs, the 8830 blackberry might beat it in quality though. Very impressive. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a mid-July launch, still waiting on my contact to confirm it though. Here's hoping.
Hmmm, 'Twould seem that all is not well in the orchard. :mikey:

i thought the whole micro sdhc was discusses WAY earlier and that unlike sd and mini sd any micro sd equipped unit will work with the sdhc format so the i760 should be able to handle whatever sandisk can throw at us.
mrailing, didnt you have the answer? yeah, i should have searched but im too lazy this morning...
Yesterday, I was in NYC on business, and just by chance, I was walking up 5th Avenue on the way to central park (we were killing time before seeing Tarzan on Broadway (which I recommend)). Anyway, we passed the Apple store at 6:05 PM, and you would NOT believe the crowd. There must have been 10,000 people in the area in front of the Apple store (which is in front of FAO Swartz), entending across 5th Avenue into the park on the side of Plaza Hotel. You would think it was the Beatles in 1964. So funny. Anyway, I am there with my family texting one of my friends about what was happening in that park. Next to me was somebody with an i730, and next to him were 2 people with a 6700 and a 6800 (I didn't even think it was out yet). And we were all making fun of the iPhone saying "we have had all this crap for 2 years already". I guess you just had to be there.
Just a little FYI. Funny moment.
John
P.S. The 6800 was only WM5.
Ditto on Tarzan. We just saw Mery Poppins last weekend, that also is a must see.

Don't think there's much chance the i760 was engineered for HC media; this design goes back to no later than Q4 '06, maybe Q3.
Don't know what happens if you insert an 8GB microSDHC card in a non-qualified device. Are you good for 4GB, or 0GB?
--BAM
Yes I am good with 4GB. Given that I have a 2GB card in my I730 and I can't make it through the music on that becasue of the low battery life (even with the bigger battery). So until they come up with a true high capacity battery, it does not matter how much high capacity memory they come up with, because you can't truly use it or appreciate it.

2. The limitations that SD had aren't suppose to be in microSD, meaning that reading shouldn't crap out when putting in a card of "HC" = "HighCapacity". They built the standard to read above 2GB in size.
3. SDHC cards were basically a new standard and introduced a new instruction set to talk to the memory 4GB and above, and this isn't the case with MicroSD.
4. It was at 3GSM in Barcelona when SanDisk introduced the 4GB microSD card, and said it would be available "sometime later this year".
5. MicroSD is slow, slower read/write speeds than SD, and the newer cards are going to comply with the new SD Speed Class 2 spec, which from what I have read, all devices with microSD slots since the name was changed has been using. Only transFlash slots were SD Speed Calls 1.
So this means we shouldn't have any issues with higher speed card (of the class 2 variety), nor should we have issues with higher capacity cards. But of course, only time will tell, and once we actually get the phone in our hands, AND they actually produce 4GB cards, then we will know, until then, it's not something to worry about.
If we had the device, 2GB is out limit so far until "sometime later this year".
He is admitting, although fairly sure, he is not 100%. Here is the realtive point from the news release that relates to mrailing's post...
"SDHC is the designation for any SD™ or SD-based card that is larger than 2GB and adheres to the new SD 2.00 specification required for cards and hosts to support 4GB to 32GB capacities. The specification was developed by the SD Association, an industry standards board, which has also created three classes to define minimum sustained data transfer speed. These cards adhere to the SD Speed Class 4 Rating3. "
I just checked out Microsoft's WM6 site and found an image of the i760 in the Go Mobile video...I am not sure if anyone has seen this yet and sorry if this is old news.

In my own research on the subject, I came to the conclusion that SDHC was a new standard released after the MicroSD standard and therefore as with other SD formats that a device is either SDHC compliant or not. IOW, MicroSD devices are NOT necessarily SDHC compliant.

Ah very cool, too bad they didn't show the keyboard sliding out I know I am really hoping for an announcement this week. I'm stuck with a standard(non-pda) 2 year old phone until it is released.

Kylah,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Your news is very encouraging. So many pessimists on this thread love to point out that the stated specifications are not an upgrade to the i730, but these people don't give recognition to the fact that the i730's hardware doesn't work great wtih the software. In other words, although the i730 has a 520mhz processor, the user interface isn't nearly as "snappy" as it is on some other newer WM devices that have much lower mhz processors. Hearing that you thought the user interface was quick is very encouraging. Although the stated specifications on the i760 aren't much better than the i760, I'm hoping Samsung took the last 2 years to really refine the phone (in addition to making it thinner/lighter, making antenna internal, etc)
It's not just Verizon stores that only have the old Windows Mobile technology....I stopped by the Samsung Experience in the mall at the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle in NYC on my way home from work on Friday and found a nice display of over 20 new and recently released phones by Samsung...with one exception. The two Windows mobile phones they showed were the i730 and i830 (which happened to be labeled wrong, the i730 was displayed as the i830 and vice versa). I started talking to the Samsung person near the display and while he admitted that you can't even really get those phones anymore but they had nothing new to offer yet in this area. I kept prodding, hoping to find something out (I didn’t ask about the i760 directly) about WM6 plans and phone and he either really had no information or was not willing to share it. My feeling was that he knew there were WM6 phone in the pipeline but he had no particular information on any specifics to share.
BTW, it was worth stopping in just to get a feel (both figuratively and literally) for some of the new phone designs and technology which are trickling their way into our hands.
