You said: IF the phone works as this demo, it's going to be awesome. but do you think it could possibly work as well as they (say)?
The demo is indeed snappy, but...
Reports have surfaced that iPhone's virtual keyboard is tough to use and really unworkable with two thumbs.
Someone else wondered whether iPhone would survive a waist-high drop. (Apparently, iPods often don't.)
Best Features: Well integrated; intuitive GUI; somewhat phone-centric; visual voicemail; advanced graphics/display; iPod convergence
Issues: Lack of 3G; no removable flash; sealed battery; semi-closed development environment; read-only Word and Excel; challenging kb; high, unsubsidized price; heavy data consumption (Web-based apps); AT&T exclusivity
Will appeal to many, including Macheads, kids, students, women and overseas travelers. Hard to imagine iPhone holding great interest for geeks, warriors, or serious biz/commercial apps.
In the end, we're sorry iPhone didn't go to Sprint, where sizzle is most needed. Still, pressure on VZW should soon be apparent.
(Thanks for the demo link, firepwr. All should view it.)
No prob. AT&T/Apple is doing a good job with the iPhone marketing (I know some will disagree here because they don't like it and are tired of hearing about it), but I signed up for iPhone info a couple months ago and got an email with that demo link yesterday (a week before release), they will be announcing the data plan price a couple days before the release (another email/blog topic). Without the demo, I wouldn't have even entertained the possibility of the iPhone, and I wouldn't have dug further to see what everyone was saying about it's corporate email possibilities.
If they had a demo of that depth of, say, a Mogul with some 3rd-party apps and hide the price until a week before release (leak $599 retail/ $499 w/ contract, then drop that 100-125 dollars) so that those who thought it was worth the money would be assured, and those that didn't would have a demo of all the functionality and a price drop to justify it, not to mention plenty of conversation about the phone again because of it.
Personally, I think Apple burnt up too much money on TV ads too-shoulda just released a couple handsets to Oprah/View/Letterman/Leno/Correll(who already asked for one on-air)/Howard Stern/Mike and Mike (who have mentioned it too) on the Monday before release. $2000-worth of phones, and because they have been so stingy with giving phone out, thats a lot of "value" in the minds of the recipients for being the first ones to have it. Even if you get 50% mention out of those, you are getting positive remarks because it will be before they can drop it and break it, while they are still loving it's novelty, and while they are still chalking up all the things they don't like to user-error/learning curve.
Haha, but then again, what the hell do I know? Seems like Apple has a handle on product marketing without my advice haha
FirePwr, i think they should not give the phones out early to oprah, howard etc, and i think they need to spend all they can on advertising to get the biggest one day sale they can get. If they gave out the phones [early] and one person said they suck, guess what.. that would kill their sales.
I think the marketing hipe is to get as many sales as possible, so if there is bad media about the phone, it will be too late. yes, i know people will be able to do a 15 day return or whatever at&t gives, but like Rebates, i imagine they are betting most will keep the phone even if there are issues. of course IMHO.
Let's get this back on topic. iPhone discussion shouldn't be happening here, so take that to the lounge or another appropriate thread.
Same goes for discussions on other similar off topic discussions. Let's keep this thread to the Rumors and release information for the SCH-i760.
Also for those responding to multiple people, there is a multiquote system now in place, and you just click on the "+ button for each post you want to quote, and then on the last post, click on Quote User, this will keep you from having to respond to each individual thread, keeping clutter to a minimum...
Now, I talked to Ethan on Saturday, and he confirmed that they pulled the device for the final software tweaks, and it's not going to be pushed to an extreme amount of time, as they are still wanting to release close to the iPhone launch. He still said soon, but not as soon as originally thought. The reports of August or September are probably false, as he said it was still aimed for a July release, but as always, things can change....

Thanks Micheal, the new feature sounds very helpful. I've always just quoted, copy, paste, go back, quote the next....etc... This new feature will be very helpful.
For anybody as dim as myself, I wanted to point out the "+ button. I was looking and looking for a + sign, but didn't see it (it's very small and hard to see.) I thought that was a set of quotes around the + sign, but it is "Quote plus" and the button is located between the "Quote User" and "Quick Reply" buttons.
Thanks also for the update on the i760. I was beginning to think I'll just go with the 6800. And for now, I'm not sure if I'll be staying @ this job, so that may mean no more Verizon for me and hence, no i760.
I may leave Sprint as well. Equus post has me really thinking hard about AT&T. I actually looked at their rates last night. Now that they have HSDPA and have dumped the TDMA air interface for WCDMA, all my excuses for staying with CDMA are gone.
But if the phone comes out before I leave, I'm gonna try to get one so I can have some fun! So hurry up Verizon!!

It's the button between the Quick Reply and the Quote User. When you click it, it turns red, and then once you have clicked all the people you want to quote, just click on "Quote User" and you get them all in the replies.

I picked up the 6800. And wow, now I see why you guys are so committed to these devices. I'm looking forward to your forum blowing up with customizations. These things get expensive, even after the device for backup software, today screen plug-ins, file explorers...
First time poster here. This thread has been incredibly informative (and I've only read the past 20 pages or so!). I had my heart set on a i760 as my first smart phone (I currently have a RAZR on VZW). I really want a small phone with a qwerty keyboard running Windows Mobile and I thought that the i760 was the only upcoming phone that would meet those needs. I've since realized that the 6800, Iris, etc are viable options so I thank you all for that.
If the i760 has the stupid VZW UI I will be very disappointed. Around here VZW is the only reliable network so it's a bit of a monopoly. I really hope that AT&T gets its act together and improves their network so I can actually get some hardware that works the way I want it to.
Even the Q came w/ a VZW theme. It's easily turned off. Don't worry.
Well, I'm still a little concerned by equus reaction a few pages ago about leaving VZW. Even if BT and WiFi aren't being crippled something must have occured for him to post as he did (I would think anyways).
Let's get this back on topic. iPhone discussion shouldn't be happening here, so take that to the lounge or another appropriate thread. ...
We'll its just like what KBAM and Equus said would happen... as the delays mount attention would be diverted to other devices... Look it's happened here as well!

Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.
Just to report after consulting, in some detail, PDAPhH's x6800 thread and many reviews of the now-released Sprint "Mogul" muscle-car...
The consensus is that the HTC x6800 is competent...if unexceptional.
Most agree it's a bit more refined than the x6700--and fixes some annoyances like limited screen brightness and sub-optimal keyboard backlighting.
Still, you don't come away from these reports with confidence that x6800 is an engineering triumph.
In fact, there's even some troubling chatter. To wit: no native industry-std headset jack (it's on an included USB dongle, or you go proprietary); fragile battery cover; underwhelming 2Mpx CMOS camera; somewhat wimpy performance (claimed by some to be slower than the x6700 tricked out with an unsupported-but-available WM5 AKU 3.5 ROM); and disappointing Bluetooth ops due to inclusion of MSFT's mediocre stack.
And of particular interest: nobody has praised the phone or HTC's build quality.
Which is to say that waiting [a few/some/several/many/bunches/bushels/30-yd dumpsters of weeks] for the i760 might be prudent.
