Hmmm... I might be looking in to the 6800 now, since both have landscape keyboards. .
I'm not sure if anyone saw this lame video of some dude testing all the system sounds on Crossbow, but if the i760 is the first VZW phone to have Crossbow and it works as snappy on the i760 as it does on the device in the video, I think the i760 will be a winner. The thing that kills me about WM 5.0 is the 1 second delay whenever I push a button. Crossbow seems to have no lag time, like what I've seen with the Blackberry and Palm OS's.
I think there must be a lot of people that think the portrait sliding keyboard is too cramped without actually giving it a shot. That's the only explanation I can think of as to why every single new device has a landscape keyboard. For years I followed every new pocket pc device with great interest in the new developments. Now I find myself skimming through the sites going "oh, a new square ppc phone with a landscape keyboard and the exact size and specs of the last ten. This one's charcoal grey instead of black." I have even given up my own Windows Mobile blog ( www.windowsmobileunderground.com )because I feel there isn't enough to write about.
That being said, the i760 will be my next phone. The portrait keyboard was a fantastic idea, but Samsung was it's only champion. If even they've given up on it, I think we can declare it dead. Let's all have a moment of silence and move on. We are tech enthusiasts, we must change with the technology. The i760 is still the most innovative phone to come through Verizon since the i730.
R.I.P. portrait keyboard. You were taken too soon.

I am looking forward to trying out this keyboard. I look at these changes as opportunities.......

And I look at them as trials of my patience.
When I bought the beloved beastie, I really lucked out and got the best of breed, although I had no real idea what the best of breed was. I knew I wanted a PDA phone, and knew there were three or four (or maybe five if you count a couple of flavours of WM) OS available. Having owned both Palm and WM PDAs in the past, I was pretty sure I wanted either a WM-PE or a Blackberry. Open source is a little too anti-cultural for me, so Linux was out too.
I tried researching the various PDAs, but was soon overwhelmed by the myriad opinions that prevail across the WWW and was just as confused as ever. I didn't happen across this forum until after the deed was already a done deal.
I decided to ignore opinions, and just go strictly on the specs. I was already contractually more or less locked into VZW so that narrowed the field considerably ... three versions of Blackberry, two versions of Audiovox, or Samsung SCH i730.
I am an IT professional, and my primary job is approving IT hardware and software for a very large enterprise of around 12,000 users. Since Blackberry is the only mobile platform the can meet our rather draconian encryption requirements, I am somewhat familiar with the pros and cons of those. So that left Audiovox or Samsung.
A quick glance at the specs left the Samsung and 6700 virtually tied. Samsung had more memory and a faster processor, but the 6700 had WM 5.0. Soo .... I had to get subjective. I went down to the VZW store and handled both of them.
... TA DA ...
Which brings us back on topic. The portrait keyboard, the overall form factor, and the build quality tipped the scales. I sincerely hope VZW doesn't throw out a winner. I will most certainly be much slower to upgrade if they do. I'm not sure Crossbow is a compelling enough reason.

Just thought you might like to check out the CNET.com new videos. The i760 is there.
According to the video, it's an mp3 player and has 64 megs ram. Certainly doesn't sound like this is aimed at the high end business market. Is it really the successor to the i730?
Damn release scheduled for mid 2007... Well I am looking for a new phone now and dont want to wait another 6 months... Hopefully the 6800 comes out sooner. That sucks, bceause I really wanted the 760.
Seeing the video makes me want it, even though it has the horizontal slider. I think I might pick up the 6800 when released as a toy, and then move to the i730 when it's pushed out later this year. I wish there was a firm date for it so I could know when to expect it, but since nothing is announced, guess we will just have to wait.
Hopefully the 6800 will be as thin, and if not, then I might hold out until the i760 comes along... If I could only get AKU3.X on the i730, then I wouldn't worry about the upgrade to the i760 until it came, but we will see when everything folds out....

Nope, worked on it for a few weeks and loading it seems not as easy as I first hoped. With the close release of new PDA devices, I just removed it from my plate of things to work on, and will be awaiting a new device in the next few months.
The i730 is working fine, and does everything I want, but I would like the caller announcements and such over bluetooth, and would like everything to work correctly in WM5, but my i730 is fine for the time being, and my work has been busy, and decided my time is better spent making money than ruining my phone.

Yeah, I gave up too. The various hacks I tried screwed up the BT so badly I was having trouble getting Voice Command to connect to my headset. I finally just did a hard reset this morning and have reinstalled things in stages with SPB Backups in between.
BTW, has SD's or Xcpuscalar(?) gotten the bugs out? Was afraid to try either at this point.

what phone are you referring to when you mention the 6800?

LESS memory, stupid keyboard...its definitely a downgrade no matter what the stupid OS is.
The dood in the video who's using Crossbow..who says that that is how snappy it will be when one loads their programs on it? My i730 runs really quick with nothing on it..but when I put all the programs and hacks on, thats when it lags a bit. Its really not bad at all, but with 64 mbs of memory? That will suck big time.
Also whats with the 1.3 mp camera?? Yes it does have a camera but this is 2007, they should have AT LEAST a 2 mp camera in it.
Mayby theyre thinking if they made it way better, they would have to make the start up price WAY higher than its been with previous devices? I dunno. Like over 900 dollars? Into the thousands. Who would buy it at that point? I might as well get the Symbol Pocket PC with 700+ mhz Processor that scans barcodes..Do I need to scan barcodes? No, but its an actual upgrade from the i730.
EDIT: http://www.symbol.com/mc70 the Symbol "Mobile Computer" has a 624 mhz Processor, not a 700+ mhz Processor...though I think it seems that you'd probebly be able to overclock it to 700 or more.
