I'm kind of in the same boat.. I mean, the i760 was never a perfect device but then again none of the smartphones that VZW carries is... So my MEID is all zeros, but my coverage doesn't seem to be as good on 6.1 and my battery life flat out sucks.. I don't even last a day on extended battery, with light usage.. VZW has swapped battery before and I'm on my 3rd unit since I originally got mine last September - I was one of the lucky early adopters when the i760 leaked
But you know what? I have no desire whatsoever to jettison the i760 and reset my new every 2 for an xv6800. That HTC phone debuted almost a year and a half ago - it's old hat and has all KINDS of issues with it.. just search these boards or google a little bit and you'll see what I mean. Trading one problem for another in my opinion.. Also the Treo's do not have a good reliability record (tend to fall apart after 3-6 mo) and the Blackberry is no good for corporate use really unless your company has Blackberry Enterprise Server.
So yeah, sure would be nice if the 760 worked better than it did, but there just aren't any alternatives, and I've already learned to live with the quirks. Plus the number pad on the front (what originally drew me to the phone) would be really hard to let go of and STILL wows my coworkers.
Personally, I'll be waiting for the next round of phones.. I'm not holding my breath though! Betting we're easily looking at Q1 or Q2 until the next batch of smartphones.. VZW's smartphone lineup is positively embarassing compared to the competitors (minus TMobile maybe). Wish they would get with the program and start refreshing their offerings more.

T-Mobile has the G1 which isntantly redeems them. I would love that phone on VZW... Not to mention T-mo is sim card, which opens up infinite smartphone possibilities...

I hear you, in general though TMobile usually has the short end of the stick.. Plus, it's TMobile.. which means great price but generally sucky network, at least in my neck of the woods.
And I still see places where all my coworkers with cool iPhones lose signal, but I still have 1 and 2 bars on VZW. Unfortunately I have to approach it from a business angle, I rely on this phone every day for work.
Patiently waiting for a viable alternative.. for me the 6800 doesn't cut it.
I upgraded to 6.1 yesterday. Hadn't seen the latest info in this thread. My MEID is not all 0's, so far the phone seems to be working okay. I held off on 6.1 specifically waiting to see if there were any serious issues, needed to do a hard reset to fix some anomalies, figured I'd go ahead with the upgrade.
We'll see.
It's a MEID issue. its not a lable on the phone for 6.0 phones do a #4357* in most cases on the system information screen there will not be a MEID.
if your running 6.1 you need to do a #43574357* if the MEID is all Zeros now your good to go for the meantime. if its anything else make sure your not stuck at 1X.
Som peoples phones work being at 1X mine would not connect at all and showed 1X.
I have a co-worker running 6.0 on his phone no issues, So my reccomendation is DO NOT UPGRADE untill this problem is fixed.

Thanks for posting this... a definitive procedure to see if your phone has this issue. I'm not so sure that upgrading to 6.1 will cause this. It may be contributory or just coincidental since the 6.1 upgrade came out just about the time this issue start. I wish I had an inside contact at VZW to get some confirmation on this (An Ethan to call, for those that have been here long enough to know the reference). I recently got a replacement phone for a screen related issue about a month ago, and I updated it to WM6.1 before I activated it. I'm not experiencing any issues, and my MEID is all zeros. Also I wonder how much this might be related to location, the specific towers that the phone is connected to.. This all sounds hardware/firmware related to me.

Greetings, I just tried getting my ailing 730 replaced through Asurion and they have agreed to upgrade me to the 760. The catch is they list it as "Back Ordered" and I will have to wait to join the 760 club. I'm curious if the back order is a result of the recall/freeze. I'll post as soon as they inform me that the phone is on the way, I have a suspicion it won't come until this issue is resolved.
you better call them back and request xv6800 while they're still in stock.
I be very surprised if there will be a fix for Samsung i760 before December, and if there is one it will be available to current users rest of the units won't be sold on Verizon anymore.
What I heard from a VZW guy is that this is specifically an issue related to a tower software upgrade for newer towers AND later-model WM6.1 760's. In their mind it is easier to swap out the 760 than do anything to the towers.
I have an original 760 purchased on retail day 1 that was upgraded to WM6.1 and functions fine across the country. I have other hardware issues that have forced a replacement, but not the MEID thing.
I have an older version i730 (almost 1 year old now) I just upgraded to 6.1. The phone worked fine until I updated the roaming list with *228. After the phone did it's reset the phone connection gave a couple of loud beeps and hasn't been able to turn back on since. I went through a couple levels of Verizon techs trying everything up to and including a hard reset but it never came back.
Verizon is overnighting an XV6800 to replace it. They did acknowledge the software bugs and had no idea when Samsung might have a fix.
Asurion just authorized an i760 in-store replacement for my i730
Will you have to pay for the phone and get a reimbursement from Asurion or do they handle the transaction?
I'm giving them to their 2nd status update call before I raise a case for either a 6800 or instore. I know my local Verizon store has a couple of the 760's behind the counter. I was able to use one for a few minutes to demo the phone. So I guess I'm wondering if the 6800 with GPS hack is a better bet than the 760 at this point. I've been on Sammy phones for a long time, and don't know if I want to jump to HTC, although the GPS hack is pretty tempting.
Well guys - I'll say my goodbyes in this thread - my 760 failed too boot and after after several calls to VZW it has been replaced with a Blackberry Curve - sure, I miss some things but it seems to be pretty stable. Thanks to all of you guys on this forum - you have all been so helpful. Good luck with your 760 but I got the feeling from the VZW manager that support for the 760 is quickly dying. Take Care.
I just went into a Verizon store earlier today to see about getting my i760 fixed. After working flawlessly for 4 months, my phone has the problem with the touch screen alignment problem.
The local store had no i760 nor any 6800 so they get on the phone to tech support. They have neither, transfered to another department who had none, and finally transfered to another department that had both! After getting my info entered, they found out the i760's are 'Quarantined'. So Im getting a 6800. I was told that they are stopping the selling of the 6800s as well, but nobody knows what is going to replace them.
Thought you all might be interested to know that Verizon should have a fix out for this before the end of October. This has been a big issue for my company with the latest batch of i760 not being able to use EVDO. Our Verizon rep has been keeping us up to date on the issue and he has assured us that the problem has been fixed and an update will be out this month. Lets hope it doesn't get delayed for some reason.

Wow--Ethan--now there's a blast from the past. We probably haven't had a reference to him a year, if not more (if memory serves me correctly, he first came up when we were discussing the WM5 update for the i730). Nice memory, Mark!

Wow - surprised at all of the discontent. I think my i760 is the most amazing phone. Sturdy - long battery life (w/o WiFi) - nice keyboard - good touchscreen - and all of the great apps for Windows Mobile (pocket outlook / office, slingplayer, google maps, GPS interface, real-time stock readouts, fancy calculators, bible readers, skype, etc.). I'd only be happier with a Verizon iPhone.
vzw will not let at&t continue to have all cool phones. vzw has 80 million customers. the omnia is the iphones worst night mare. the 760 was cool for a while. i have 8 for my company. the are all being swapped at some point.
