I have this problem, and i have none of those 3rd party apps that you mention. i really think it has to do with a data connection hanging the phone. Mine gets warm(er) when it's in this "dead" mode.
Dang nabit, it just happened to me again. I used my i760 no more than 30 minutes ago and all was fine. Set it down on my desk while I went back to work. Next thing I know, a few minutes ago, my computer rings--it's CallWave telling me I have a call. My i760 never rang and was locked up.
Right now, I've got the following installed:
Newsbreak (Ilium Software)
Spb Pocket Plus 4.0.2
Total Commander (no way this is causing the problem)
Spb Diary
Yahoo! Go
Spb Wallet
(I previously had IM+ installed but removed it.)
Anyone experiencing this problem and also running one of those programs?
(I soooo much want an iPhone....)

Uninstall PocketPlus and see if that helps. If not, I suggest you start over with a hard reset, but DO NOT REINSTALL PocketPlus since there are known issues with it and WM6

Don't have that problem on my phone and have SPB PP along with SPB Backup. Whether I maunally put phone in sleep mode or allow it to go into sleep mode by itself, it always wakes up when a call or text comes in.

It happens to me, and all i have installed is:
Ewallett
Dopewars
Palringo
LiveSearch
..
I have
Exchange Activesync Running (i bet this is the problem)
2 additional POP3 Accounts.
I was getting this 3 or 4 times a day with PP, PS and Pocket Diary loaded. I uninstalled PP and went with Mobile Shell and haven't had it lock up since. Been a whole week and I haven't even soft reset. Noticed a huge improvement in memory leakage. PP is the culprit. I swear.
Odd that different programs cause this problem. Whereas you have the problem with PP, I do not. Wonder if in reality, this phone is just plain flakey and 6.1 just makes some phones worse.

Could also be the combination of programs... you know battling PPC DLLs

I'm either going to remove Pocket Plus or just hard reset and start from scratch. I only added the programs I did because I was going on a trip and tought I "needed" them. I actually ran my upgraded i760 naked for the first week and it ran well so I'm thinking it is some type of software conflict. The question in my mind is whether removing Pocket Plus will clear enough stuff out or whether a hard reset is the best option.

Yeah, mine worked without a problem. So now its synced at work (source) and at home (just once), with no errors. Like you said though, the real test comes monday at work. At least we made some progress
Well, I think I am finally getting somewhere. I am able to sync at work without any errors. So I have been able to sync at work, sync at home then sync at work again. This is a nice way to start the work week.

Ok. my employee had only
Yahoo 2 Go and
Live Search installed.
He reported a few "Lockups". so.
i still think it's with the OutLook Exchange as he has that installed too.
I've received our 2 replacements, I will have him only run exchange after the update to 6.1 and see if it runs ok. Then i will let him install one at a time.
I can't even sign on to the exchange. It will not recognize the password and I keep on getting 85010015 error. I am using the same setting as before that work fine before the update. My IT guy is stumped as well.
Hobbs, Did you figure this out? it may be due to a "security certificate". when you setup Exchange, you have to Check or Uncheck the box.
I dont' have a Cert, so i uncheck and it works fine.

I too have been having random lockups and missed calls. Only thing I can do to recover from this condition is to change the battery. I did notice one strange thing in particular, it only seems to happen after my battery is below 50% or so my batt meter says. Funny after installing a freshly charged extended battery I don't have this problem for a couple of days. this might explain why some people are reporting longer battery life than normal after upgrading to WM6.1 Is it possible WM6.1 ior other app is not reporting the remaining battery power correctly? By the way I am not using MS Exchange server and I am having the same problems. Just an observation don't beat me up too badly.
Installed Apps
Spb Pocket Plus
Marsware weather panel
MS Live search
Yahoo Go 3.0
sirius WM5
TCPMP
OH! most important of all is the little windows busy icon continously pops up even without a data session active.

A common thread here seems to be Yahoo Go. Perhaps that is the culprit.
I removed Pocket Plus last night. The problem did not crop up once today. I'll run like this for another few days. If the problem occurs again, the next item for removal will be Yahoo Go.

I didn't have the above (Yahho2Go) installed on my phone since 6.1 update. so, i'm going to lean towards either Liver Search or Exchange Activesync as the culprit.
oh.. let me check my phone and see if its working.
Edit
Its still working, bet it's LiVeSearch.

I've got the problem but don't use YahooGo. I do use Live Search and Pocket Plus, both possible culprits. Other possibilities from my phone: PIE, TodayAgenda+, PhoneAlarm, Windows Live.

I've had this happen SEVERAL times as well and I have also noticed that it tends to make the battery area warmer than normal when it happens. The only way I can get it to come back on is to hit the red reset button or to disconnect the battery entirely. I don't have any other 3rd party apps installed yet. I do use Active Sync with our office exchange server, so I am not sure if that might be a common thread among the people that are having this same problem.
It's definitely frustrating because you don't know that it is frozen until you need to hit the backlight button to check your emails, etc. Maybe I should not have upgraded so soon...
