I have read through every post about 6.1 for a few days now and am still unsure whether I should upgrade or not. I am not the original owner of my phone (got it in a trade + cash deal) and do not have access to the original documentation of sale, warranty, etc...

That being said, my question is, what are the risks that upgrading to 6.1 will kill my phone? Seems to have happened more than once just in this community. And is 6.1 good enough that it's worth the risk? (elimination of third party software is always a benefit in my book, + threaded sms and the faster typing due to no missed letters...).

Anyways, just thought it was time I sought expert advice before I attempted an upgrade. I do use SPB programs but with the exception of some P+ stuff, it's mostly for novelty and convenience so I could live without them for awhile.

Thanks in advance and for the all the resources I've used in the past without posting thanks

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

We don't buy these phones to have a safe phone experience.

The major difference I've noticed is speed and stability.

WM6 lagged quite a bit once I got it all my third party apps installed and tweaked the way I liked. I also use Pocket Hack Master to overclock the processor, and it would not be stable at anything above 400MHz.

WM6.1 runs fine at 450MHz, which provides a noticeable jump in speed, which in turn makes running all those third party apps much more enjoyable.

Wink ROMtastic?

I had a weird upgrade experience. The ROM image downloaded fine, then it said, "Updateing phone" and just went on like that forever. So I gave up and unplugged the phone anyways.

IT STILL WORKED!! I guess once the ROM image is in you're probably ok.

On the changes/improvements -
The registry is way more organized and efficient. I haven't seen an optimization point yet, but I haven't had much time to comb through it.

Downside off the Upgrade -
Everything is package into one EXE. That means I have to extract the ROM image to do some l33t-tastic ROM cooking. So far UniExtract, only yields and EULA text file. But again, I haven't had much time to hack at it yet. Will keep you posted on the ROM hacking.

Did they take it down?

I have tried several links for the upgrade to windows mobile 6.1 for the Samsung SCH-i760 and none of them work. I get to the faq at samsung and it says click here for the upgrade and it isn't a link. I also tried the tech train site and it isn't working either. Anyone have a working link to download the 6.1 upgrade Please? Thanks

Ok. in about 6 hours of the upgrade, i have found only 1, Yes 1 thing that i like. Its the Integrated Threaded SMS. otherwise, i haven't found anything that makes me smile.... Especially the BT Letdown.

Ok.. this is even better with the Threaded SMS. I sent an SMS, and the recipient called back and left a Voicemail. Now since i'm using CallWave (free) it translates the voicemail to Text and sends it (the translated text) via SMS to me and its in the proper thread.

now that's awesome.

First hour or so I've noticed the following:

-Threaded sms rocks
-Start up time is easily cut in half (makes me in think something might have been wrong before)
-WAY less lag swtiching between tabs/programs
-SPB programs installed and worked fine, though have not tried MS themes yet (I use Mobile Shell, Weather, Pocket Plus, and Phone Suite)
-and for those that use Mobile Shell there is no longer a lag when the device is turned on - i.e. - it goes straight to the NOW screen instead of momentarily going to the today screen first... that's quite nice!
-I've yet to have to go back and correct messages due to missed letters
-No problems handling 2 bluetooth headsets and switching between them is smooth ( did have to enter passcodes for one headset however)
-PIE(+) (i mean default PIE with Pocket Plus installed...) is now a fine default browser for me until I get into Skyfire beta and/or Opera 9.5 becomes stable (on a side note I've used the last few opera betas and I must say... quite impressive... I'm not sure if it's impressive enough to get me to pay for it however...)
-Auto-detected my exchange settings just fine, which is nice because I'm lazy
-I sort of like the "getting started" thing, though I doubt many people in this community will find that useful)

Also all the SPB software was fresh install. The only other two programs I have installed atm are iContact .75 and Windows Live Search (which is even better now that the device is faster... or at least feels faster).

I think that's about it, but just though I'd share my experiences with 6.1 in case any other poor soul was like me - super hesitant.

I have experienced this in the past but cannot confirm yet if it is fixed in 6.1. I will report more later when I test it out.

Make sure your radio was upgraded. What seems to happen is that it updates the PDA first, then the cellular radio. I have a feeling you'll find that your cellular radio has not yet been upgraded. I'm going to add the version numbers to the main WM 6.1 thread (the one that's closed) in a minute.

As mentioned in the main WM 6.1 thread (see the banner at the top of the forum), Samsung moved the files sometime today. However, a member is hosting them on a mirror site. The link to the mirror is in the same thread.

Question are clock & announce fixed (or not WM 6 bugs?)

Haven't seen these mentioned here. I'm wondering if clock memory leak and the failure to announce callers thru the BT headset are fixed -- or are these bugs not problems of WM 6 ?

My guess is that for whatever reason several people are "bricking" their i760s via the upgrade and are all calling VZW -> VZW calls Samsung and says "wtf m8?" and Samsung pulls the files pending more clear instructions or a fix of potential errors ...

3 cheers for Samsung however eh? I got kind of down on them after my wife's HORRID experience with the Glyde. It really makes me happy that they put out this update. This is the kind of stuff that can build brand loyalty - support your devices and users after the sale.

That makes sense. I have been holding off to upgrade due to the problems folks have been having. I can't go without a phone for the next few days, especially a brick.

Does it make sense to wait to see if they put out a better upgrade package? I have the upgrade file saved on my hard drive in case...

Just a suggestion... I reloaded SPB Pocket Plus, Sprite BKUP, Kilmist Registry Editor, and MemMaid following the 6.1 upgrade. Before using the application files that I had downloaded to my laptop, I checked the developer websites and three had updated their programs and since they were minor upgrades, free of charge.
