Got mine updated last night. It took about 8 or 9 tries before it was successful because it kept giving me an open port failed message during the 3rd part of the setup when it was trying to update and connect to the phone antenna. I used windows XP SP3 with a PocketSolutions retractable charge sync cable.
In the end I was able to get it to work by downloading and reinstalling the USB drivers listed above the patch download on Samsung’s website. I also used the Start, Run, “msconfig” utility in Windows XP to boot my computer with only ActiveSync running and nothing else.
I failed. Here is my story, just a story and experience, no solutions:
I have a 64 bit Vista machine, it has Windows Mobile Device Manager (WMDM) installed on it. But being a 64 bit machine I didn't even try using it.
My wife has a brand new Vista machine, and it's 32 bit. Cool I thought, all it needs is WMDM. So I fire it up, but WMDM won't install; not from the Microsoft download page nor from my CD that came with my phone. No way could I get it to install. Why? The only reason I could figure is her machine has software on it called "Vista Sync Center", and I think that is meant to take the place of WMDM (Keep in mind my Vista 64 bit machine with WMDM is a little older and did not have that software on it from the factory). The help page for Vista Sync Center says it cannot be removed or disabled. I think its presence prevented the install of WMDM.
The problem is Vista Sync Center does not operate the same as WMDM, for example it does not have the selections to enable/disable the USB connection like WMDM, and my upgrade hung every time at the point where you were to modify the USB setting in WMDM. I tried to just end the partnership with the phone at that point, but it still would not work with Vista Sync center, it just hung.
What's a mother to do?

Sorry, let me clarify.
I love the Voice Command feature of reading me my text messages when they come in. I noticed that after installing certain programs, it doesn't work as well.
I successfully flashed the ROM to 6.1, and all of a sudden it was working just fine again.
Then I installed PDB Phone Suite again, and the feature of reading me my text messages went back to skipping, reading half then freezing, just reading the name of the sender and just stopping.
I believe that this program creates some kind of conflict with the Voice Command program.
Anyway, I uninstalled the program, but am still having the problem.
What I'd like to do is to reflash the ROM with 6.1 again, and NOT install the Phone Suite program, and see if my phone eventually experiences the problem or if Phone Suite is indeed incompatible with Voice Command.
Uninstalling a program can still leave residule files on the device.
Flashing the ROM cleans it so you start from scratch.
That's my problem and my goal,,... any help would be appreciated.

TO all those who recieved a replacement phone after the update bricked thiers- did it come installed with 6.1?
i got my replacement wednesday and unfortunatly, the answer is no. it's still a 6.0 phone. So now the question is, whether to attempt the upgrade again and possibly brick the new phone. I guess i'll wait at least until the old one is recieved by verizon before i attempt the upgrade with new one.
I got the common "port open failed" message, and after reading some posts, made sure I had a valid activesync partnership first, which seemed to work. I had hard reset the phone just before the upgrade, so the previous partnership was no longer recognized.
Anyone else getting "Charge the Battery" before it'll even start the upgrade? My battery is at like 95% as i just pulled it off the charge maybe 10 minutes ago?
I know while doing the upgrade it told me to make sure the phone was fully charged, or something to that effect. I just ran the upgrade and ignored that message.
I went throught the upgrade process and steps. had multiple issues with error about "device did not reset on its own"...but eventually the upgrade finished...or so I thought.
Now my device says "upgrade already installed" and device goes to "does not support reinstall". However, the ROM verstion is still at 6.0 and not the new BD version? Help?
Did you figure this fix out? Mine is doing the exact same thing. I cannot make it update the phone ROM.
Hey so I'm excited for the 6.1 update. I've been MIA from the forums for a while. I want to update my phone but I'm worried about one thing. I don't have too many programs installed on the phone so I'm not worried about loosing those. I sync my phone with outlook so most of the information is backed up. My one concern are my SMS messages. Is there a way to archive these on outlook 2007? I've tried searching these forums and google with no success. Please help a fellow i760 user out. Thanks.

Not sure if
you got this answered... PIMBackup (Dot Fred) will backup text and SMS messages. I think sprite will as well.

As a rule of thumb I would hard reset BEFORE and AFTER the upgrade to 6.1. That seems to wipe out a lot of the problems pre and post upgrade that are seen on the forums
