It says I need SP2 on XP, but I loathe SP2 am I going to encounter errors if I do not load SP2 on my XP laptop do you think?
Nearly every application written in the last 1-2 years is going to state SP2 is required. But I don't see why this loader would need it. Perhaps it's the modem drivers that are loaded. Maybe they aren't SP1 compatible? I dunno...
But why would you loathe SP2?? Dude take that plunge first. It's been out for what, 3 years now? The bugs are worked out. You're not thinking of SP3 which just came out a couple of months ago are you?
I don't want to divert too much here, but if this creates soo many problems why "upgrade," at all. I am not hearing any glorious, "oh wow 6.1 is waaay better."
Yeah, while there are some nice features in 6.1 (SMS Woo!) the main advantage of 6.1 is going to be for the enterprise. (By using that Domain Enroll icon in Connections.) 6.1, in conjunction with Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 will allow us admins to add these phones to the domain, apply group policy to them, deliver software packages, do device inventory, device provisioning, have them be VPN connected at all times which will allow access to corporate intranets. Encryption of data at rest, and allow easy setup (like Blackberries actually) just enter your email address and a temp password we generate.
Also none of this requires Exchagne so you can do this to any standalone PDA's or if your enterprise does not use Exchange.
Other then any bug fixes.. that's where the real magic of 6.1 is.
I travel quite a bit in the U.S. (airline pilot). Now my phone automatically updates the Home timezone when I turn it on in a new city. Works better for me as I use my phone for my alarm clock. I've read that users in Phoenix have some problems with this, but they can just select manual timezone.
Good call. I hadn't exactly realized this. I was surprised when I started it back up after the upgrade that the clock was set to the correct timezone. Every other time I had hard reset, it defaulted to Eastern and I had to change it. That is a welcome addition.
Second try (after getting replacement for my brick from Verizon), I went really safe: XP system doing nothing else - didn't even have ActiveSync on it previously. Full install went 100% as illustrated in the Verizon web site on first try. Haven't used it yet, but at least the update's done.
if you phone gets bricked. i found a way to somehow reset it and get it passed the emergency clear screen. i think i pulled the battery out and put it back in and held clear or one of the other two buttons. it reset it. try all 3 options one of them should work.

Welcome to PDAPhoneHome... and yes.. the manual in PHX is how is has to be (for now.)
I am sure I am just missing something -- however every link I follow only gets me to the PDF with instructions but not the actual software. Is the update really official? Where is the official link?

go SAMSUNG United States - Main On top of right side page in search box type in i760.
At top of list click on software and this opens pdf file. There is underlined link to click and this opens file which by reading carefully tells you where to click to download rom update. On this page carefully read and you will find the actual download link. It is small print and easy to miss. It is just below info on how to verify if your phone has right version for the upgrade.
As I understand it you must verify in device manager on computer (winxp) that samsung drivers have been installed before you can safely flash the rom update. The message read that the drivers have been installed and requested a reboot. I did the restart and checked device manager and no drivers from samsung found.
Stumped I called Samsung and spent three hours on tier one support which did not help at all. I pleaded for level two or higher help repeatedly but was finally told to call back the next day as support hours were over.
Other matters occupied me so I haven't called back. Instead I am putting out my problem here for any assistance I can get.
Did hard reset first. Ran the upgrade on an old XP SP2 machine w/ Activesync 4.5. Followed the instructions exactly as listed on Samsung's upgrade page. Upgrade went perfectly in a single try. I did have to do a hard reset again after the upgrade in order to get text messaging to work properly.

The drivers never loaded automatically for me, even though I installed and reinstalled them. During the phone upgrade the new hardware wizard came up and I manually pointed to the location of the drivers.
I still can't get past the "phone hasn't restarted" screen...even though the phone reboots every time right before it gets to this point and it says its detected the phone? I've tried 3 different USB ports and shutting down both antivirus and firewall programs.
Any more ideas?
EDIT: Tried another computer and it finally took after a couple of tries. Things look good now.

Did you change your "Data Connection" setting?
Go to Start > Settings > System > Data Connection and change it to "As the modem through USB".
2) the vista version released several days ago is identical to the version now on samsung's website
3) the 6.1 upgrade on vista installed perfectly for me with only 1 try. however, i did this on a relatively fresh install of vista sp1, i hard reset my phone prior to the procedure, i freshly installed wdmc and the samsung drivers verbatim per the instructions.
Installed here in 2 tries. I could NOT get the device recognized as a USB modem, but when the first try quit, it got recognized. The install instructions are not crystal clear.
